The emails on NB are per-image. They don't take into consideration the
retry attempts.

There's no built-in features for that.

My shell scripting is shaky at best so I'm hoping that one of you may be
able to help me out.

I'm wondering how I would go about editing the
/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/backup_exit_notify.sh script so that it doesn't
inform me via email of successfully completed backups. Basically I'm
only interested in backups that complete with a 1 or higher.

I have modified our bp.conf to keep 3 months of jobs in the activity
monitor so will be able to check here for successful backups. I really
only need to be informed if a backup has failed.

Thanks in advance,

[Veritas-bu] Ejecting media from ACS using a script.

2008-01-10 Thread Fernandes, Eustace

Tape Library ACS SL8500
Procedure
1. Produce eject list and eject using vmchange (done this and works
fine)
2. Physically remove media from the cap
3. produce report that matches the actual media removed from the cap
(currently there may be a discrepancy between the eject list and what
was actually in the cap.

Challenges
How can I check the contents of the cap from the script?
OR
What command can I use in a script to inventory the ACS SL8500 Tape
Library after the media is removed from the cap
Then I can do a diff between the eject list and what is still in the
library, which should give me a list of what was actually ejected.
Any ideas

Hi Eustace

Changing the retention of a policy never affects existing backups. If
you want to change the retention for already written images you have to
use

bpexpdate -recalculate -backupid backup_id -copy number -ret
retention_level

Some stupid ideas:
- try to use Java gui to add pool
- make sure your filesystems are not full

I am trying to add another volume pool to my environment today, and it
failed with an EMM Database Error(196). I've searched through google
and support, but don't anything that pertains to this. What I did find
with vxlogview is this:

4/13/2006 09:20:35.385 V-111-1049
[MachineConfigImpl::helperQueryNbpushdataConfig] EMMServer generic error
= nbpushdata must be run to complete the upgrade
4/13/2006 09:20:35.385 V-111-1049 [MediaPoolImpl::CreateMediaPool]
EMMServer generic error = cannot add media pools until nbpushdata has
been run

I've been running for a while at MP2. Why would I need to run
nbpushdata? I've been dealing with this for several days, and earlier
ran nbpushdata, which created more problems that it fixed. I'm back
today with a catalog restore, but back with the Volume Pool error.

Suggestions?

Thanks,
Jason

I also have just found from where my headaches came: the voldb in
volmgr\database has some old volume information in it. There are old
volume pools with tapes assigned that we long ago deleted. That's where
my messed up media came from. Any ideas of how to run nbpushdata
without corrupting all I have now?

[Veritas-bu] Recovery server with media and volume info

2006-04-12 Thread Fernandes, Eustace
Title: Recovery server with media and volume info

Objective to do a bpmedialist and vmquery -a on a new servre (same name) using old servers *DB files.

I lost all my EMM information shortly after I upgraded to 6.0 and would like to know how I could use the old 4.5 DB info to list my volumes and media

I have mediaDB volDB glogBD poolBD ruleDB from 4.5 MP6

I re-installed 4.5 MP6 on another server (same name as the original)

Then copied the DB files to the new system (same host name where the copy DB files came from)

However netbackup does not start, errors daabase auto-upgrade failed: invalid database version header (56)

Also when I try and tpconfig to add drives, I get error could not get GlobalDB host info.

Any ideas  .. I would like to recover my media and volume on a new server(same name as the DB files)

RE: [Veritas-bu] Inline tape copy slow

2005-12-30 Thread Fernandes, Eustace
Title: Message

thanks for your reply.
30mb/sec that is double the speed I get for a normal backup
to a single tape
what version of Netbackup are you
running?
what speed are you getting for a normal backup, non-ITC? is
it approx 30mb/sec?

Did you tweak buffers or anything in /etc/system,
etc.. to get this to work?
NET_BUFFER_SZ  = 26214
NUMBER_DATA_BUFFERS = 32
SIZE_DATA_BUFFERS = 65536
don't know if these are related but I'll mention them just
in case ./db/config   shm and ENABLE_SCSI_RESERVE

I am consistently getting 8 mb/sec on ITC independent of
what pair of drives are used, but 16mb/sec for duplication and normal
backup(single tape)
Any ideas? .. could it be the LTO drives Vs
SDLT320?

I'm
using ITC.

Second
copy is 20 miles across town via FC over DWDM.

both
targets are STK L700e loaded with Native FC IBM LTO2 drives, connected via
SanBox2 Sun (QLogic) switches (Soon to be replaced with Brocade 3800s surplused
from another project) and Sun (QLogic) X6768A HBAs

Can
write 30+ MB/s to two tapes simultaneously.performance hit over a
single drive is negligible.

Are
you doing correct benchmarked tests that aren't being affected by other
influences?
i.e.,
with no other backup or restore jobs running, you're backing up the same
machine (same data set, same network connectivity, etc, etc) twice, each time
to a single drive, to each of the two drives (eliminate the
possibility that one particular drive you're only using in the ITC config
isn't the problem) you will use for the ITC job, then repeating the exact same
job using ITC to the 2 identical tape drives?

question you change type in the volDB to match the
available SU?, i.e.
if you want to do restore from a tape that is marked as
type DLT2 and the UNIT did not exist, can you
change the volDB info to reflect its now a DLT3 to match
the currently available SU with type DLT3?

No
problem with that.  That's the right way.

By the
way, LTO3==HCART3 is just a convenience.  There's no coorelation between
the "3"'s in those names.  You could configure them as HCART (or DLT2) for
all Netbackup cares.  NB just matches the type in the VolDB with the type
on the STU.

  5.0

already have multiple stu's, for another reasonnot a problem
  there.

Thanks to Samuel, I think I got what i needed.will configure
the drives and media as different formats ( LTO2 -> HCART2  and LTO3
-> HCART3) and create a new storage unit for the HCART3
  format.

anyone see a prob with that?

What
version of NetBackup are using? There was a bug in 4.5MP6 that didn't allow
multiple storage units for a media server from the GUI, you can still do it
from the command  line.

  veritas-bu@mailman.eng.auburn.eduSubject: [Veritas-bu] multiple

  Is anyone
using multiple tape/tape drive formats in one library with a single media
  server?

  for
  example:

  one server,
  one library
  some LTO2
  drives, some LTO3 drives.

  how do you
manage it? can't (from what I can tell) assign each type of drive to a
different storage unit (without a second media
server).
  Do you have
both types of tapes, and let NBU assign jobs and tapes to drives as it
  pleases?

  I want to
avoid my LTO2 tapes being loaded into LTO3 drives and being written so
that they can no longer be used in an LTO2 drive.

  Also, I'd like
to send slower (100mb/s) clients to LTO2 drives, and GigE clients to LTO3,
  etc.

  best way I can
see to do that is to add another library for the LTO3 drives, so that
there's a separate storage units with just those drives, OR add a second
media server, and configure zones to allow each media server to only see
  one type of drive.
