Re: [Veritas-bu] NBU and StorageTek

2011-06-15 Thread Saran Brar
Can you see the changer with the command "cat /proc/scsi/scsi"

If not, i am not sure about RHEL 5.5 but in 4 we used to follow the
following steps:

Add following line in /etc/modprobe.conf

“options scsi_mod max_luns=255”

“options scsi_mod scsi_noreportlun=1”

Then create new initrd file…..

cd /boot

Rename initrd file

e.g. mv initrd-2.6.9-42.EL.img initrd-2.6.9-42.EL.main

mkinitrd initrd-`uname –r`.img `uname –r`

e.g. mkinitrd initrd-2.6.9-42.EL.img 2.6.9-42.EL

At the end REBOOT your Linux box.

and again you have to re-scan. using first command cat /proc/scsi/scsi

Thanks,

Saran

Re: [Veritas-bu] Image Cleanup hangs

2011-06-08 Thread Saran Brar
Goto /usr/openv/netbackup/db/images/sfd-BV2105-linux-dd/
There you will find a lot of folders with different ctimes
goto 1306*
first run cp sfd-BV2105-linux-dd_1306900839_INCR /tmp

then run cp sfd-BV2105-linux-dd_1306900839_INCR.f.z /tmp

delete these two files

recycle the services and wait for image cleanup to auto start or run bpimage
-cleanup -allclients

Re: [Veritas-bu] Image Cleanup hangs

2011-06-08 Thread Saran Brar
This can be because of a corrupt image. We also faced same issue where the
image cleanup was getting stuck at a particular client. We moved the
client's images to a temp location and restarted the netbackup services.
Image cleanup auto restarted and completed successfully.

May be the VSS writers are not registered properly. Try running this command
"vssadmin list writers" and make sure all the writers are stable. And are
you using microsoft vss writers or some other vendor.

I feel it cannot but you can do the same via scripting where in first phase
you can run the bpduplicate command and in second phase you can run
bpexpdate command.

Re: [Veritas-bu] Hot_Cat_Restore_Server

2011-04-05 Thread Saran Brar
Simon,

Does your old media server has any robots or drives attached and how many
media are assigned to each robot.

You may have to install netbackup on new media server and move the volume
database from old to new media server

And to update the EMM database we can run the nbemmcmd -updatehost command
for the new media server.

Anyone has better options please do share.

Thanks,

Saran

Re: [Veritas-bu] Linux backup issue

2011-03-24 Thread Saran Brar
Thanks for the replies. We have setup following entries in the backup
selection without cross mount points selected.

/

/boot

/opt

/var

I double checked in the backup image and it seems it is skipping some files
which I am not sure of. By using exclude lists we will not backup at all
which we do not want.

Please help how to get it done.

Thanks,

Saran

Below is my netbackup environment:

Master - Solaris 10 , Netbackup 7.0.1
Media - Solaris 10, Netbackup 7.0.1
Client - Suse Linux 2.6, Netbackup 7.0.1

Backup for the client is completing with status code 0 but in the detailed
status its showing below warnings

Mar 24, 2011 8:00:23 AM - Info bpbrm (pid=12275) from client whplmoscyc1:

Mar 24, 2011 8:00:24 AM - Info bpbrm (pid=12275) from client whplmoscyc1:
TRV - /proc is on file system type PROC. Skipping.
Since we upgraded from 6.5.3.1 to 7.0.1, all unix backups are showing these
warnings but are completing with status code 0.

I googled for the error but not able to find a suitable answer for it.

Can anyone please explain why is that so?

Thanks in Advance,

Saran

System call failed usually suggests unknown hostname. Did you test the basic
network connectivity between master/media server and client. Try following
commands

On master/media server

-- bptestbpcd -client clietname -verbose
-- telnet clientname bpcd
-- bpclntcmd -ip clientip
-- bpclntcmd -hn clientname

on client

-- bptestbpcd -client masterserver -verbose
-- telnet masterserver bpcd
-- bpclntcmd -pn

Re: [Veritas-bu] Netbackup Access Control.

2011-03-15 Thread Saran Brar
Create one new user in linux and in /usr/openv/java/auth.conf file make the
following entry assuming new user name as newuser

newuser ADMIN=AM JBP=AM

This will give new user access only to the activity monitor and user will be
able to restart/resume the failed jobs

Thanks,

Looks like EMM server down issue. did you check for free space on the
master/emm server and any logging enabled which is creating heavy logs and
eating up the space.

I have restarted the services; I even rebooted the server just to be safe. Our
program SA said he hasn’t pushed an update on the system for a while now, so
nothing has changed on the system that I know of. I tried rebuilding one of
the policies (suggested by Scott Jacobson) but I still had the same issues as
previously mentioned. Just to recap the issues I’m having: backups will not
run (even manual starts fail to even start), servers listed under Host
Properties will not stay connected, trying to access Storage Containers gives a
“database error” pop-up and displays nothing, and trying to access the Activity
Monitor hangs the Admin application.

Your disk may be full of logs. When /opt is at 100% you can get errors like
the ones you've pasted and try the below command

/usr/openv/db/bin/NB_dbsrv
if you get an output like this,

ld.so.1: dbsrv9: fatal: libdbserv9_r.so: open failed: No such file or
directory

Below link will fix your problem

Re: [Veritas-bu] Netabckup server registry entries change after eachreboot

2011-02-08 Thread Saran Brar
Hi Simon,

Problem has been resolved. Here is what I did:

- Host file was empty. I manually entered the master and media server
entries
- Disable the netbackup services and rebooted the server
- When checked registry, settings did not change
- Enabled the netbackup services and again rebooted
- Again checked and registry was intact

Thanks all for your quick and prompt responses.

Re: [Veritas-bu] Moving from solaris master server to windows

2010-12-30 Thread Saran Brar

You can perform below steps to achieve this:

1. First take a catalog backup on solaris master server and save the DR file in
safe place
2. Build a windows master server with same hostname and ipaddress as for
solaris one and DO NOT PUT ON NETWORK
3. Detach the any devices directly attached to solaris master server and attach
with windows master server
4. Turn off the solaris master server and PUT WINDOWS MASTER SERVER ON NETWORK
5. Install Netbackup on the new windows master server and scan for devices
attached
6. Import catalog backup, here you will be asked for the DR file.
7. Test the network connectivity between master, media servers and clients
8. Try some test backups and restores.

We also faced same issue and below is the
Symantec recommendation which resolved it

There are two things I would recommend
to minimize these kinds of things happening in the future. Both will require
a restart of NetBackup on the master so most likely you will need a maintenance
window.

The first thing is to tune the
resource broker (nbrb) so it releases resources faster. Below is the technote
on how to do this:

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH57942

The second things is to clear out
all the stale CORBA handles. Some of them go all the way back to 2009:

-rw-rw-rw- 1 root
  root 455 Sep 8 2009 nbproxy_nbsl-DeviceManagement-101.ior.mgr

-rw-rw-rw- 1 root root
455 Sep 16 2009 nbproxy_nbsl-DeviceManagement-104.ior.mgr

Below is the technote on how to
do this:

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH75227

It is not directly related but
is always a good practice to clear these out. They can cause the system
to run out of sockets. Let me know if you need anything else. If not I
would like to close the case.

Subject: [Veritas-bu] bpimage -oldserver -newserver command

I upgraded from Netbackup 6.5.4 to Netbackup 7.0.1 recently. During the upgrade
process we decommissioned

two media servers. The two media servers are using Datadomains for storage unit
targets. Monthly backups go to tape.

Each of the two Datadomains have about 200TB of data. In the catalog we have
references to the old media servers.

I'm running the command below to move the references from old server to the new
server.

./bpimage -oldserver nbumedia02 -newserver nbumedia01

It has been running for 8 days plus. I can tell the process is reading through
the image list but

this seems to be taking to long. Has anyone else experienced this and did it
take such a long period of time? I'm beginning

to think there is another problem. Why so long. I can see 24 hours or more but

Re: [Veritas-bu] Slow moving backup.

2010-12-03 Thread Saran Brar

Does the backup eventually fail. If it does with what error code. Try running
backup in multiple streams using wild card and look out for a troublesome
folder or a file. It can be a stale NFS file entry and it can be resolved
either by rebooting or mounting and unmounting the file system.

Re: [Veritas-bu] how to fix a vss writer

2010-12-02 Thread Saran Brar

Judy,

Please provide the below details to proceed further:

- Operating System on which Exchange 2010 is installed.
- Which VSS writer is failing and please paste error while running "vssadmin
list writers" command

Also please check the following

For quick workaround, try disabling the Local Continuous protection on the
storage groups if running.
With LCP running sometimes backups do fail. And backup is more important than
LCP in my view.

Mine currently says failed. I need to get it back to stable. My exchange 2010

Can’t you just do /home/*? This will kick off a separate backp for every file
and directory in /home… but you can limit the jobs per policy to 3, and that
would only allow three active jobs at a time… Just a thought.

I do the same thing: Create a policy with ALD and exclude everything you've
created separate policies/file selections for.

We actually do this more often than I'd like, but it does seem to work out very
well.

The way that I have come up with that is to create a second "catch all" policy.

In your case "/home " would be the backup selection list, in tandem with an
exclude list of the three entries that you have specified.

Interested in any reactions…

I’m trying to break up the backups of a certain large folder via selection list
and I want to make sure I get everything.

Client: Solaris 10 x86 running NBU 6.5.6

Master/Media: Windows 2003 running NBU 6.5.6

So far I’ve got:

/home/[a-nA-N]*

/home/[o-zO-Z]*

/home/[0-9]*

What about special files and folders that start with special characters? Is
there a nice easy pattern I can tack onto this to pick up everything else? For
some reason Mr. Google isn’t being very
helpful in this regard this morning, and Pg. 630 of the Windows Admin guide
doesn’t provide much detail either.

Thanks,

3. I can successfully run sysconfig -t command and it shows two drives
connected to the filer.

I am going to run other commands and share my findings.

Thanks once again.

Regards,

Saran

Saran

May be a problem with the tape drive or the tape drive config or the tape drive
cabling.
What type of tape library do you have?

Can you tell us a little more about the tape drives and how they are connected
to the netapp filer.

Can you issue the netapp commands

. sysconfig –t

. storage show tape

Check the device name from the sysconfig –t with that defined in netbackup.

Can you issue the command mt –f device status

With a tape loaded.

Can you try a few other mt commands.

Do you see anything in the bptm log
The old and new netbackup ndmp logs.

Anything in the netapp /vol/vol0/etc/messages file
Can you turn on ndmp debugging and then check the netapp ndmp debugging log.

Good luck len

Hello everyone,

We just installed two NDMP drives on one of our NetApp filers. Since then
backups are failing with 99 generic error code. Backups if ran through another
filer like a 3 way NDMP backup complete successfully.

Usually for a NDMP backup to complete successfully, it has to clear all five
phases but when looked into the affected filer's logs, we saw the backup fails
at Phase 2. I have really no idea from where to start.

Any clue will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Saran
