Simon, One very handy tool Symantec has recently published is NetBackup Domain Network Analyzer (NB DNA.) Download is: http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH125454 It is delployed with 6.5.6, but can be used with 6.5.5. There is an additional patch you have to install with 6.5.5. I think the patch is a binary addition - you don't have to shutdown services to apply the patch. (I didn't anyway.) The tool will give you a very detailed list of any name resolution problems. It will also list any network problems it finds when trying to initiate client connections. I'll be using it at least once a week to figure out what my network and firewall teams are doing to the backups. Could you enable Logging for "ADMIN" folder at all ? Also, do logging for NBCONSOLE? Recycle Services and try the process again? I assume the system has been rebooted? I have one thought of things that you can look for. I am not sure if it is all still true, but netbackup stores the master host name in multiple places. I do not believe that sysmantec has a tool or doc set that would enable us to know all the settings. And they can be different in different areas. So you might have hostname xyz or xyz.something or xyz.something.com ... in use. There was a feature, if you were using the java gui. If the name used on the gui logon screen did not match exactly the stored name, some functions would not be available. First off this is a Solaris server running 5.1, yes 5.1. It just has not been upgraded yet for some reason. When in the gui (windows java or jnbSA) under "Host Prperties" - "Master Server", when I click on the master server and try to access the "Properties" I get this message "None of the slected hosts could be contacted"... I have never seen this before and there is not much on the web, well nothing actually.
