[VFB] A legendary fly fishing day

2008-10-16 Thread Tom Davenport

Every now and then (usually in the fall) I have a day of fishing that
takes my breath away. After some early winter weather three days
ago, fall has come back with legendary "October bright blue weather".
I started the morning at a local reservoir casting and striping close
to shore, and picked up nine or ten fat cutthroat and rainbows, all 15
inches plus. The bite stopped around noon, so I headed back and
stopped to fish the Weber river which has dropped dramatically since
irrigation flows were cut off October 15th. I waded down stream to
the bottom of a long, slow deep run, and started casting a size 18 sow
bug with a size 20 BH pheasant tail dropper behind a strike indicator
and hooked up right away. For the next two hours I fished this run,
catching a fish almost every cast. I quit counting after 25. Most
were browns, with six over 15 inches, the largest a fat 18. Lots of
smaller browns and the usual white fish.

This is an exciting time to fish the Weber, the fish have been pretty
much untouched for four or five months because of high irrigation
flows, and when it stops the fish find and stack up in deep holes.
Add to that a recent Utah Supreme court decision which allows
fishermen access anywhere on any Utah river as long as they get in the
water via public access and stay within the high water mark. With the
Weber, that opens up the entire river since half of it is high and dry
with low flows.

I'll probably go out again on Saturday and that may be the end of my
fishing for a while. Next Thursday I've scheduled a LASIK adjustment
(the surgery I had last March left a little astigmatism in both eyes)
so that will keep me off the river for at least a week.

All in all, it would have been a perfect day if BYU hadn't lost to
TCU. But the Hornfrogs took it to them and beat them fair and square,
so congrats, Frogs.

But it was a wonderful day and one of the best fishing days I have had
for quite a while.

P.S. For those who are interested, I have scheduled surgery for the
prostate cancer December 11th. It will be a laproscopic procedure
performed by Dr. Robert Stephenson, at the Huntsman Cancer Center. He
is considered by many to be one of the nation's best. Hopefully all
will go well.

[VFB] Re: Fly Photos

2008-10-16 Thread Anthony Spezio
If you belong to the group you can start an album yourself. You can select if
you want to have the photos open to all.
I don't have much computer savvy but I did figure that one out.
I will post the tying instructions for the Simple Craw in the next day or so.
The instructions are in the VFB archives.

your album on yahoo. I was not successful.  How do I find
it.   Thanks Dail Graham-PS Missed you at conclave, hope you
are feeling better.

Dail,

Get on "Groups.yahoo.com".  If you don't already
have one, you may have to set up an account first, like you did for
the google groups (where VFB is located).

Then join the group "flyfishingandflytyingforpanfish "

(hint - put "panfish" in the box "Search for
groups".  It'll be the 2nd group.)

Once you join, click on "photos".  Tony's album is
called, of all things, "Arkansas Tony".  So far, he has put
in three views (top, bottom & side) of his "Simple
Crawfish".  He has a picture of a couple of foam poppers.
And he has a picture of one of those "I can't believe it!"
flies.  The picture of his deer hair sunfish is worth all the
effort of getting in to the group!

BY THE WAY - If this group is set up so you have to be approved
by the group's "meister", you might have to wait a couple of
days.  The list 'owner' is Chuck Alexander.  He's out of
town at the hospital with his wife this week.  She had her knee
replaced Tuesday.  They may not get home till Saturday.

Hope this helped.

I have sad memories of the one 32 that Hans sent me. I tried to be so
careful. I had a thread tied to the bend so as not to lose it. I
tied a royal coachman. I split thread tiny hackle. I finished the
fly as I tied the thread the hook sprang from my vise. With the
thread attached I found it but to my dismay the hook had snapped. I
have watched for the hooks but most know they are like gold. I have
the TMC 32's and 30's. I also have two boxes of Mustad 28's and
one
of 26. John, if you did not do it, visit Hans' site to see the tiny
flies. They really are remarkable.

Hi All,

I thought I'd give a little fishing report with some photos and run a fly
swap idea by people to see if there is any interest. Tha salmon are
starting to come into the local rivers so the sea run cutts tend to follow
and chow on eggs. Last sunday I was able to hook (and release) a nice
dolly varden as well as a couple of cutts and coastal rainbow. Yesterday
my brother and I went out to get some sea run cutts and did pretty well...
these guys are always on the move so you've got to find em' sometimes you
can get several out of one hole. These are not huge fish but are really
pretty fish you gotta love em. You can see photos here:

Any interest in a small sea run cutthroat fly swap? Maybe 10 or 12 at most.

Tight lines,
