[VFB] A legendary fly fishing day
Every now and then (usually in the fall) I have a day of fishing that takes my breath away. After some early winter weather three days ago, fall has come back with legendary "October bright blue weather". I started the morning at a local reservoir casting and striping close to shore, and picked up nine or ten fat cutthroat and rainbows, all 15 inches plus. The bite stopped around noon, so I headed back and stopped to fish the Weber river which has dropped dramatically since irrigation flows were cut off October 15th. I waded down stream to the bottom of a long, slow deep run, and started casting a size 18 sow bug with a size 20 BH pheasant tail dropper behind a strike indicator and hooked up right away. For the next two hours I fished this run, catching a fish almost every cast. I quit counting after 25. Most were browns, with six over 15 inches, the largest a fat 18. Lots of smaller browns and the usual white fish. This is an exciting time to fish the Weber, the fish have been pretty much untouched for four or five months because of high irrigation flows, and when it stops the fish find and stack up in deep holes. Add to that a recent Utah Supreme court decision which allows fishermen access anywhere on any Utah river as long as they get in the water via public access and stay within the high water mark. With the Weber, that opens up the entire river since half of it is high and dry with low flows. I'll probably go out again on Saturday and that may be the end of my fishing for a while. Next Thursday I've scheduled a LASIK adjustment (the surgery I had last March left a little astigmatism in both eyes) so that will keep me off the river for at least a week. All in all, it would have been a perfect day if BYU hadn't lost to TCU. But the Hornfrogs took it to them and beat them fair and square, so congrats, Frogs. But it was a wonderful day and one of the best fishing days I have had for quite a while. P.S. For those who are interested, I have scheduled surgery for the prostate cancer December 11th. It will be a laproscopic procedure performed by Dr. Robert Stephenson, at the Huntsman Cancer Center. He is considered by many to be one of the nation's best. Hopefully all will go well. [VFB] Re: Fly Photos
If you belong to the group you can start an album yourself. You can select if you want to have the photos open to all. I don't have much computer savvy but I did figure that one out. I will post the tying instructions for the Simple Craw in the next day or so. The instructions are in the VFB archives. Search up Yahoo Groups, click on that, a screen will open I think you can follow directions from there. There should be other ways but I am not computer literate.
