[VFB] From FTF SBS procedure for braided loops

2009-04-18 Thread jim phillips

Things you need:

1. Gudebrod Braided Butt Leader
2. Guitar string
3. Surgical tubing
4. Insta-Cure(similar to crazy glue)
5. Scissors

Here's the step by step.

Insert guitar string into the braid approximately 2-3 inches

Place end of braid into the middle of the guitar string

Pull guitar string along with the end of the braid back through itself

Apply a drop or 2 of insta-cure

Cut a small piece of clear surgical tubing (don't use heat shrink tubing) and
place it over the guitar string

Place end of braided loop inside the guitar string loop

Pull braid through the tubing

Start inserting your fly line into the braid

Clip the frayed ends of the braid

Pull the tubing down to where the braid ends on the fly line

Apply a drop of Insta-cure on each end of the tubing

There you have it; these loops will last for a full year's worth of fishing.
Again I never had 1 fail on me doing it this way, I replace them once a year. I
will be putting up a video on Youtube sometime soon and will post the link here.

[VFB] braided loops

2009-04-18 Thread Harmen Boshuis
Why not just remove a bit of the outer fly line using lacquer thinner and just
making the loop in the core ?? No knots, shrink tubing or anything else.

What ever works for you. The author stated that he has used this method for
numerous years with NO failures.

That was one of the traditional ways of making a line-end loop. As I
understand it, using the core of the fly line for the loop (there are
several different techniques) -- is fine, if your fish are not large.
The core has about a 30-pound test rating. You can get to 50-pound
test by using the larger braided nylon loops.

Some flylines come with a manufactured welded loop at the end. I have
no idea what strength welded loops have. Anyone?

[VFB] A Fly Design Question

2009-04-18 Thread Wes Wada

Hi VFB,

It's spring here (finally). This winter seemed r-e-a-l-l-y long.

I have a fly design question / challenge / problem.

I have been using microfibetts to make antennae for terrestrials. But
one fiber is really too thin. If I glue three together, I get a good
diameter, but it's a lot of trouble. The taper to the end of the
fiber is important. Standard paint brush fiber width is good, but
normal bristles on those brushes don't taper.

Artist's paintbrushes would work, if I could find ones with bristles
at least 1-1/2 long. And boy would that brush be expensive.

Can anyone think of a durable product I can use? I could use
something like bear hair, but a synthetic in clear or white would be
preferable.

Any ideas of where to look?

Thanks,
Wes Wada

[VFB] Re: A Fly Design Question

2009-04-18 Thread mel hocken

Wes try your standard paint brush fiber. Just hold them against a sanding
disk to sand a taper in the end. You can do a small brush all at once then
pick the fibers free as you need them
