[VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY

2011-12-20 Thread Jimmy D. Moore
Fish are, of course, indispensable to the angler. They give him an
excuse for fishing and justify the fly rod without which he would be a
mere vagrant. But the average fisherman's average catch doesn't even
begin to justify, as fish, its cost in work, time, and money. The true
worth of fishing, as the experienced, sophisticated angler comes to
realize, lies in the memorable contacts with people and other living
creatures, scenes and places, and living waters great and small which it
provides.

Re: [VFB] Help needed. Fly-tying classes

2011-12-20 Thread Don Ordes

Bob,

Let'em learn like I did- no vise, tools, tying supplies, or instruction.
Give them some road-kill parts- feathers and furs, and some photos of
finished flies

with the basic sequences.

Might sound like I being facetious, but in actually, they'll always
appreciate for the rest of their tying days having the right materials and
tools once they get them.

I know this won't happen, but it would do them good and teach them how
important dexterity is.

Beginning tiers today take for granted the incredible array of materials,
tools, and training available, and I think the lack of all of that to start
would enhance the appreciation once the good stuff in incorporated. From
Thompson A vices and Chinese necks to Renzetti's and Whiting super-saddles-
everything has come so far.

When I started my community ed classes at a local high school I got the
tool s from Cascade Crest, they have some nice basic tools that have
lasted 3 seasons.

For the vises I use Regal vises, they are made less than 100 miles from
me and the class location. The town I teach in is very big on buying
local, carbon footprint watching and all that, also helps that is is
higher income for the area.
