AW: [VFB] More B-day wishes

[Thomas R. Eckert]

It is with heavy heart that I tell you of the passing of Mark Romero. This
past evening Mark lost his battle with stage four lung cancer. His wife,
Misako will need our love and support as she goes through this trying time.

Absolutely!  I already bought a cupcake last week at the bakery's 
returned goods outlet,  And I think I have a left-over candle that 
still has a little flame left in it.

Hope the cupcake stays kinda fresh till Thursday.   That is, if it's 
not too late already.

This comes as a shock, just yesterday afternoon I recieved an update on Mark 
that he had just returned from treatment and was at home recovering.

[VFB] Mark Romero

Like many others, I am  saddened to learn of Mark's passing. I only learned of  
his illness on 30 Jan 2012. I sent him an e-mail and he replied immediately. 
Now he has gone.  Mark was a generous person and when I was trying to locate 
some small stainless or saltwater resistant hooks, he sent me some Gamakatsu 
hooks most of which have since been turned into small krill pattern flies for 
pink (humpback) salmon.  My condolences go to Misa.

I have not been paying attention to email for a number of months, and noticed I 
had over a thousand emails on the Comcast site I use just for VFB, and was 
tempted to delete them all, but then thought "No, I better check and make sure 
that no one has died."  Sadly, someone had.  

I met Mark and his wife when I last attended Sowbug, I loved the large, bold 
and  beautiful saltwater patterns he was tying then, and enjoyed meeting his 
wife even more.  They were a fun, happy couple, who often participated together 
at various fly tying expos.  I can remember thinking, "This is what I would 
like to do when I retire, be just like Mark." Well, I have retired, but the 
Expo fly tying hasn't materialized.

Mark was a lot like his flies, a big personality who commanded attention.  I 
was fun to get to know him, and I had looked forward to meeting him again.  A 
sad, sad loss.  My prayers and best wishes go out to Misako.

[VFB] Mark Romero

It is interesting how fragile life is.  I feel saddened to learn of Mark's
passing.  He was sometimes a challenge on the list but with me he was
always a friend and always generous.  We exchanged a few emails following
his revealing he had cancer and that it was so progressed.  I will miss him
and I hope the best for Misako.

This is very sad news. I met Mark at the same time I first met Tony in
person up at the Catskills Bamboo Rodmakers gathering in  Roscoe, NY. Mark
was a very warm and open person and he and Misa invited Tony and I over to
their house before we left town. We got a tour of their very impressive
tying room. They had more hooks than Bass Pro Shops. And not just any
hooks, thousands of very nice salmon hooks. I know Mark was known for
rubbing a few people the wrong way, but he was nothing but kind to me. I
didn't get to spend much time with him at the last Sowbug, but I am glad I
stopped by his station when he had a few slow minutes and got to talk for a
bit. My thoughts and prayers are with Misa.

This is sad. I was just emailing back and forth with Mark every day until a cpl 
weeks ago. We are losing too many friends, too soon on this list and others.  
First we lost Rodger Oleson a cpl weeks ago, and now Mark.  Mark always helped 
me a LOT, especially when i first started tying. And he sent me tons of hooks 
over the years. He was also one heck of a great fly tier. I will miss him, and 
my prayers are with his wife.  Does anybody know exactly how old Mark was???
