like this fly and have a variation to share.

Re: [VFB] Mike Martinek

2019-01-21 Thread Pacres
Peggy, thanks for passing this along. I'm sad to hear that Mike passed. He
was a huge inspiration to me and many other tyers who tied featherwing
streamers. He self-published 2 books of streamer flies, mostly ones he
designed as well as some that his friends had created. They are tough to
find, Mike used to sell these at the shows he tied at. He also did a couple
of videos with the Hooked on Fly Tying production.

different galleries you have on the site. It'll take some time, but keep
posting and you'll get lots of people looking.

Re: [VFB] #32 Mustad Royal Coachman Video in the making

2017-04-03 Thread Pacres
Can't wait to see the video, Don. I have a couple spools of the UNI-Caenis
thread. Label says it is a 20 denier thread and is really fine. I've only
ever tried tying with it a couple times and it is quite fragile. Cudos to
you Don for tying at both extremes of the size scale.

Re: [VFB] Thinking of buying myself something to clear me up

2016-04-30 Thread Pacres
I love my Ekich bobbin, but I've been eyeing the Regal Revolution and the
Custom Dubbing Blending kit that Hareline has. God knows I don't need
anymore dubbing, but it would be one of those luxury items that would be
cool to have to play around with. I guess it depends on your budget.

Hope that you have a speedy recover and a good time getting some new toys
for the tying area.

I use something similar to what Rick uses, but I had found one with 5
drawers. I have 2, but I wish I had a couple more. I just picked up a
couple more of the 3 drawer ones, but they are not quiate as compact as the
5's. I also seen something on Ebay today that might work well.

Anyone
know where you can but a unit like that? I'm guessing a fabric store
perhaps?

Re: [VFB] Streamer

2011-12-21 Thread Pacres
Hey Tony

Just a couple things I would change.

With the butt of the streamer, there is a bit of a bump in the floss, I
would tie material all along the shank to keep that even. It's a tricky
spot to keep even. The wing is a good proportion, but just a little too
high angled. You could either tie the wings lower on the shank ( 10 and 2)
or strip a few fibers off the bottom near the tie in point. the throat is
a bit fluffy, I'm not sure if that is the desired effect, but I would use
something a little less fluffy there. I hate critiquing, but I hope that it
helps you tie something more like you had in mind.

You could also post at the streamer list for some good advise. they helped
me quite a bit when I was first starting with streamers.

2011-11-21 Thread Pacres
There was quite a good mix, but I guess that my streamer addiction really
shows in what I photograph lol. I love to see these tied on long shank
hooks, but for reliability, if I was going to fish these patterns, it would
be on tandem set-ups. As you mention, the leverage is a factor. Lots of
full dressed Atlantic salmon flies, spey, trout, realistic, wet... I
honestly only made it maybe 1/4 of the way around the tyers. I think I
spent about 3 hours chatting with the Sweds just inside the front doors
starting with VFB's Niclas Runarsson.

able to. thank for posting, it's great to hear about the shows I don't get

We used to do it on the fly tying forum a few years back. It was cool,
but the scheduling is what kinda killed things I think.

If you can make it a regular thing that people can drop into watch,
you could probably make that work.

Re: [VFB] Fly Line Question?????

Did you pull off the entire line? I had a friend once spool a line, tying
the "attach this end to backing" end where it was supposed to go. Seems the
factory put a loop on the wrong end and he was trying to cast the running
level line. Sort of the same result as you are getting. I would give that a
check if yo have not already. The taper should be noticeable on any WF
line.

If you aren't getting messages, you can always check the internet location
to see if new messages are being added.

Check your spam filters, if you labeled one VFB message as spam, likey most
others will get that label as well. I've seen a few messages come through
with a [SPAM] last couple days which may be a problem.

Re: [VFB] Tying Small Flies...

2010-01-03 Thread Pacres
A couple things you can try.

At least an 8/0 thread, 11/0 or 14/0 is better if you can find it.

I usually tie down in hook size to get a feel for proportion and technique.
Tie a couple 12's then 14's then 16 etc... until you get the hang of it.

Fewer wraps than larger flies, and sparser materials. It's easy to get too
much on the hook.

That's about all I got. lol

Good luck.

Wow, that's a lot more than I expected. I bought this on eBay just a
couple months back thinking it was interesting.

Thanks for the info.

Re: [VFB] First Edition Fly Fishing Books

2010-01-02 Thread Pacres
Gary,

I recently picked up a copy of John Gierach's Signs of Life (signed), and a
few other hard to find books. From what I can tell, this is a first edition
(not sure how to find out about first printing). Anyhow just wondering for
book, how do you store them if they are worth a few bucks?

What about self published books like Mike Martinek's 2 volumes of streamer
patterns or some of the local fishing clubs booklets etc? I really just buy
what I like, but always try to find signed copies.

I'm also curious to know why a copy that is inscribed worth more than one
just simply signed. Curious because I though it may have been the opposite
and also that most of my signed book are inscribed, but mostly to other
people.

[VFB] Re: sub for seals fur

2009-10-20 Thread Pacres

Hey Pat

I assume you are in the US and are not allowed to import seal. There
are a couple things you can use instead. A synthetic sub called
Simi-seal is available, but it doesn't have the same translucence or
coarse textrue seal does. Pigs wool or Polar bear under fur works
really well if you have access to it, but it is tough to get Polar
bear legally in the US and the pigs wool is hard to source. One other
posibillity is to use Arctic fox, or angora goat underfur blended with
some antron. This will give you the coarse texture and the antron will
provide highlight. You may be able to use straight angora as it can be
long stranded and perhaps perfect for what you need.

To get the seal(sub) to "string" out, you will nee to dub a bit heavy
and comb it out to get it like you want.

Hope that helps.

Sounds like a great deal. Do you know if this is open to fly tyers outside
the USA, specifically Canada?

[VFB] Re: Website building software

2009-04-07 Thread Pacres

Depends what you want it for.

You might want to try a blog software (you can make it just pages if
you want to) as most are free, very simple to use and don't add in the
pop-ups most free web hosts add to support the "free". I run my blog
on wordpress.com and quite enjoy the ease of use. I handle lots of
sites and coded most of them from the ground up, but the wordpress is
a nice break from coding.

They have a bunch of pre-made templates and you just need to add a
graphic. You can have it running in about 20 minutes, and it has a lot
of nice features. Nothing to upload as it's all web-based editing.

Email me and I can send you a zip of all the flysource files I have. There
are about 1600 or so in my collection. The streamer list also uses this
format - http://streamerlist.ning.com/ and there is a download available
from flyangler http://flyangler.ca/media/flyangler_flysource.zip with 216

[VFB] Re: Polor Bear Hair/Fur

Superfly does stock it still. They are a distributor though, so would
need to go through one of the shops they supply. ( most of the
Canadian shops deal with them) send me an emial off list and I can
direct you. It isn't legal though to ship it outside of Canada and you
may run into some problems there.

[VFB] Re: Polor Bear Hair/Fur

2009-01-08 Thread Pacres

If you are in Canada, I could get some to you, but otherwise it's
pretty tough and most likely you would need a permit to possess.

Like Nev mentioned, the natual white is really hard to get. I did get
some Superfly packages that were nice and white, along with a bunch of
other colors. I've been tying a few flies this week with it, so this
post is timely. Here is a link to a fly I just did yesterday -

I do see it on eBay from time to time, but it is pretty rare.

[VFB] Re: Vise ID...

2008-10-30 Thread Pacres

Not sure it would be an AK vise as I do have a few of his tools
(Great stuff if you can find it) and the logos are quite different. It
may be an older incarnation of the brand though.
