Re: [VFB] #32 Mustad Royal Coachman Video in the making
I see your point (barely, I mean, they *are* size 32s after all), between Tiemco and Mustad 32s in size difference, but in my view, either one is a challenge that is something beyond my grasp - at least for any time in the foreseeable future - and tying on either one is something worthy of admiration. To tie on the smaller of the two, I guess the Mustad correct?, would indeed be far more challenging, but that does not mean that the Tiemco is by any means "easy to tie on". Like I stated before, I've only ever tied down to 26's and even that was a challenge for my big mitts and failing eyes. DonO - You mentioned that you tied on a blind eye / naked eye hook, yet the two hooks in Nick's picture appear to have eyes. Am I missing something? Is the hook you used eye-less, or am I misunderstanding your use of the words "naked eye", or is the hook not a Mustad or Tiemco, or is there some other situation I'm just not thinking of? Can't wait to see that video! -Pete On Tue, Apr 4, 2017 at 2:23 AM, Niclas (Gmail) wrote: > > *"Jack,* > *Are those #32 Tiemco or #32 Mustad?Big/Tiny difference."* > > Picture illustrates what Don means with that... Re: [VFB] #32 Mustad Royal Coachman Video in the making
I’m going to work on making the video more entertaining than a normal tutorial. That means a lot of clips of the materials and tools used, comparing them to normal. Then I’ll have section of the actual tie. Since the tie itself is not practical for most tiers, I would think entertainment is the ultimate goal. And it’s even very hard to get ahold of the hooks these days. I’ll make sure the video clips migrate time to time to me tying without glasses or a magnifying glass just for proof of naked-eye tying. A few years more and I’ll probably need a magnifying glass to tie these. Thread check. I would not know what denier this is, but it’s close to 50/0 denear as I can tell. The hand-selected thread I use is so fine that one 12”+/- strand of it floats up and away and disappears in a couple of seconds, like real baby-spider float-silk strands. I sent Hans some awhile back. It’s from a clothes-line that was clear tube over a spun multi-filament core. I hope to be able to show all of this on the video, if I can still find a piece of the clothes-line in my stock-piles. The bobbin looks like it is hanging in space unless the light shines off of it just right. My camera can catch it, don’t know if the video camera can. I’ll try to mix some humor in also, as I am want to do. AAMOF, a fishing sequence with me catching a small trout on a #32 dropper would be sweet. A #32 Copper John would be the ticket for a dropper. Re: [VFB] #32 Mustad Royal Coachman Video in the making
I started to "make" my own thread for flies smaller than #26. Picked out a few filaments from a piece of GSP thread, waxed, twisted and put it on a little spool. That was TRUE spiderweb... à la super strong. Using that on a video it would look like the fly was tying itself while you were just moving your hand around it. ;o) On Mon, Apr 3, 2017 at 11:39 AM, 'Anthony Spezio' via VFB Mail < vfb-mail@googlegroups.com> wrote: > I tyed mine with 10/0 Gudebrod. I tyed mine with 10/0 Gudebrod. Too bad they don't make any more. It was a finer thread than the 14/0 thread that I once had. This hook is real small, it will fit in the gape of the sx 32 you might find today. I am anxiously awaiting that video - I can'r say I've ever tied anything smaller than 26, mostly because I never felt that fish would take anything smaller, but I admit also because my skill level just isn't there for it.
