Hi Mike;

When using word to create a pattern description, do you follow a basic template
or do you create a new word file with text and photos inserted as necessary?

I do similar to Don.  I have on-line links bookmarked.  In addition, patterns
that I plan to tie I create a Word document.  I break this down in the file
structure much as Don describes but not quite so fine because he ties thousands
of patterns and I tie a few.  For me this is an advantage because I can add
thoughts to to the file and pictures from different sources.

Wayne, It depends on what format you are going to store your files in.

Using the Explore program, create folders and sub-folders based on catagories
that you define.
Each sub-folder is files in that catagory.  And under those are sub-files for
that catagory and so on.  I have files as far as 6 steps deep, but they are
still easy to find.

The trick is to be disciplined when you file and make sure you name everything
descriptively.  That makes retreival simple.

Sample:

My photos- All Flies
    All Fishing Flies
            Saltwater flies
                Inshore patterns
                    Shrimp pattrns
                        Kinky-fiber patterns
    Swap-flies- shrimp swap 2009

This is just a sample, and each folder and subfolders can number as many
catagories as you want.  I have about 300 catagories between Fantasy Flies,
Fishing Flies, Web-site files, DVD files, etc.  I have over 5000 photographs
stored.

Re: [VFB] RE: fly pattern database/scrap book

2010-11-12 Thread Don Ordes
Wayne asked:

template or do you create a new word file with text and photos inserted as
necessary?

No, I just open a blank document and 'free-wheel' it. I just make sure the
heading is what I want for my file folder title. When I'm done, I do a 'save
as' and then browse to the sub-folder I want the file in, and it's there.

Example- my 'houseflies' folder has a bunch of finished fly photos (sub-files),
1st batch, second batch, etc., and then a Word doc. file that has a ton of
'beautiful' housefly photos pulled from all over the net, to use as models for
tying. On some photos, i show the url where I got it, if I think I would want
to go back there. In Word, I can resize the photos brought in and make
observatins and suggestions about how and what to use for parts of the fly. If
I drew fly designs, I can also add the scanned drawing to either the folder or
the Word file.

Re: [VFB] RE: fly pattern database/scrap book

2010-11-12 Thread Michael Bliss
Now I basically create a new word file for each. It is not as organized as
it could be but by keeping it narrowed to flies I use or want to use and by
category - emergers for example. I find them quickly. If it grows, I will
simply create new folders and move the files for the folders into it.
Simple and easy. I like it now because I can add any number of photos, show
peoples variations and write any notes such as where I used it and how it
worked on the file.

Basically yes, but
this is something that is tweaked to my needs:

undocumented
even if mysql, not really multi user safe
sometimes poor error handling, what the heck, I'm checking with the log
files, but nothing for the average user
etc.
And I have not really time for support...

I run it on linux, it needs a glassfish or tomcat server.

I would suggest to use flysource. It has even more options than my
program. But runs only on windows, and that;s the reason why I started
my program.

If someone is willing to go a hard road, I'm willing to share. One
modification of the sw is needed though, my database credentials hare
hard coded

Copy paste work, you can also save web pages, both as a file as a
favorite link in your browser. Real player also has software that will let
you save video to your computer, there's quite a few good vids on many
websites including YouTube.

Hi All;

I recently acquired a Pansonic toughbook CF-18 computer and plan on using it
for hobby stuff, primarily fly tying/fishing.

Anyone store patterns on their computer? If so, how do you do it and what
software do you use?

One idea I have is creating a pattern book for events I visit, such as Sow
Bug. My wife recently made a cookbook of my daughter's college soccer team
tailgate recipies and had it published as a spiral cook book. It worked
really well and was well recieved by others.

I do similar to Don. I have on-line links bookmarked. In addition,
patterns that I plan to tie I create a Word document. I break this down in
the file structure much as Don describes but not quite so fine because he
ties thousands of patterns and I tie a few. For me this is an advantage
because I can add thoughts to to the file and pictures from different
sources.
