Re: [VFB] We're Back!!!!
Thanks, Alan, Actually it started in March of 2008, lasted for about 6 months, went into remission, and came back in the spring of 2009 (just before our cruise), and lasted for about 9 months. Went into recession and then came back with a fury in Feb. 2010. No one knows why it goes into recession, or what triggers the return. Didn't know if they were going to allow the surgery Wed. afternoon. The anesthesiologist didn't like my EKG, so I had to go to the main old hospital to get and echo-cardiogram that morning. He saw the results and green-lighted the surgery while they were prepping me. The statistics say that the odds are 50/50 suicide for those having TN after 3 years. I was in my 3rd year. Fortunately for me I was able to control enough of the pain with the meds. to avoid the suicide thoughts, but not really that far off. It's tough to describe the pain. Closest thing I can think of is that while you're sleeping, comeone sticks an ice pic through your cheek, jaw, and tongue- rudely waking you up screaming. I'm just glad it's behind me. Just have a big hospital bill to pay off now. But it was worth every nickel. Just got home a little while ago and saw all of the emails for prayers and I very much appreciate every one of them. The surgery was a complete success. We're all doing very well, considering that is was major brain surgery- not actually on the brain, but under the brain. Some nerve tingling and numbness exist where that nerve goes to the face (but no pain whatsoever), but the doc said that was normal and the numbness would heal over a little time. They said they had to use a lot of anesthesia to knock me out, and I told them that's because they had to knock out 4 of us. I got calls from Allan and Denny in the room and was able to update them on my condition, which you have seen here. Thank you Allan and Denny. The surgery was around 2 hours, but I was in recovery for 3 hours instead of one, which worried my family- as you could imagine, adding to that they couldn't get any progress updates because it was after hours. (The staff didn't realize thay had 4 of us to wake up- lol) But it all worked out fine, and I had two blood vessels rubbing the nerve- one wore a groove and another had worked it way through the fibers of the nerve to the opposide side. The trigeminal nerve is way inside the head tucked under the brain. So he cut a 1.5 hole in the skull, moved the brain over, and got to the nerve way deep. So the Doc fixed both vessels and was pretty sure that this was my problem the moment he saw the situation. He had to cut the connective tissues and move the blood vessels to the back and put a teflon pad between the blood vessels and the nerves. Problem solved. I have a real good scar forth-coming behind my right ear from over the ear to my the top of my shirt collar (about 8 long). The top is numb, but the bottom is pretty sore as that is the neck muscle that he had to penetrate. After all this and and 3 hours in recovery, I was able to walk around just 2 hours after waking up (to go to the restroom), then I took another walk about 10:00 that night (3 hrs after waking up) and did very well. The next morning I took a 15min. walk with the therapist and she said I didn't need any therapy- she said she couldn't tell that I had had surgery by my strides. Then last night I walked the halls for 50 minutes and only stopped because my socked feet got sore. Amazing what this neurosurgeon is able to do. He's rated as right at the top in all the country for what his specialty is- deep brain surgery. After being operated on by him, I'd recommend him without a doubt to anyone. The new hospital I went to is 5 stars plus in my book. I could have not asked for a better surgery experience and recovery. I feel great! Way better than when I walked into the hospital. The epileptic seizure drugs and the pain were taking their toll on my whole being. I have to thank 1st God and then my wife and then my flytying in helping me to hold up until I got the surgery. Re: [VFB] We're BackAllen, Ha-ha. LOL, The front reception area was like a beauty pagent! But I have to say that the nursing staff would be very hard to beat on a 'professional' basis (and they were all cute too). Buggs said he felt loved. I had a room right in front of the nurse-station and they literally nursed me to recovery. I told my main nurse that one of my fly buddies said to pinch her when I was ready to be thrown out. Having a 'new' friend in Dennis Conrad was also of great relief to me. I'll spare you all of the details, but the horrible face-pain (suicidal) is only part of the ordeal of trigeminal neuralgia. I'm still on the seizure meds and have to be weaned off of them over a 2 week period. After that I hope my short-term memory will recover. These meds are almost as bad as the condition- not everyone can take them. I wanted to write and thank you all and later I'll answer any questions if you have them.. I have family upstairs, so I need to head that way. My daughter flew in from Portland to be here, and it sure has helped. Food FOOD! I want food!!! Awww, Or-Des, you're so cuddly I bet those nurses would vote for you as their Poster Boy. But then, Ronnie and Buggs would get bent all out of shape. Good to know you're in ONE piece Buddy and if anything, your sense of humor has blossomed. My little pissant operation pales in comparison to what you had done. Yes, and Prayer does work. Don: Glad it went well for everybody .. And YES, anytime you are the one being cut on, and SPECIALLY in your brain, it's MAJOR surgery.. My luck, I'd have a doc go into a sneezing fit LOL..Anyway, glad it was all a success, and I know you are glad that pain is gone, Chuck - Original Message - From: Don Ordes To: vfb-mail@googlegroups.com Sent: Saturday, May 01, 2010 3:16 PM Subject: [VFB] We're Back Hey guys!
