2012-01-28 Thread Jimmy D. Moore
"Fish are, of course, indispensable to the angler. They give him an
excuse for fishing and justify the fly rod without which he would be a
mere vagrant. But the average fisherman's average catch doesn't even
begin to justify, as fish, its cost in work, time, and money. The true
worth of fishing, as the experienced, sophisticated angler comes to
realize, lies in the memorable contacts with people and other living
creatures, scenes and places, and living waters great and small which it
provides."

[VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY

2012-01-22 Thread Jimmy D. Moore

 Jimmy D. Moore

1. You wade in your "brogans" and do it "bare legged."

2. Your flies are made from corn silk. If you don't catch anything, you
can at least smoke them.

3. You've mounted your Orvis Battenkill on a cane
pole.

4. You wear a Hawaiian "flower-de" shirt on the stream.

5. Your fishing cap has "CAT" embroidered on the front.

6. You have the imprint of a Skoal snuff can on the vest pocket of your
"Over-alls".

7. You spit snuff juice on your fly as a fish attractant

8. You spit snuff juice onto the water because it intoxicates the "chubs".

9. Your beard below your mouth is yellowish from the snuff drool.

10.Your fishing car/truck has "wash me" written in the dirt on the back.

11 You have a supply of fresh worms just in case.

12. Your over-all galluses serve as a lanyard for your fishing tools.

13. Your leader is made from real cat gut.

14. Your hat has dried worms on it.

15. Your over-alls can stand alone when you take
   them off.

16. Your neck really is red!

2012-01-18 Thread Jimmy D. Moore
" He slept with his fly rod standing in the corner next to his bed. He didn't bother taking off his shirt and pants. His vest on the bed post and his wading boots were placed where he could swing off the bed, and like a fireman ram his feet into them. His fishing hat was by his pillow. The only thing different was that he didn't have a pole to slide down to the stream."

[VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY

2012-01-10 Thread Jimmy D. Moore
"Ordinarily the man accustomed to a 9-foot fly rod would reduce to one
about 7 feet long and feel that he was equipped for working a small
brook. This, I beg to point out, is only the palest concession to that
kind of angling. If we chop 4 feet off that, however, the remaining 3
foot length will permit casting from almost any position. I use mine
right- or left-handed, with the tip pointing almost at the water.
Because of the length and essentially greater line speed, the rod throws
tight loops, which permits casting under obstacles with relative ease.
There is no tendency to "hook" casts off the target, as you certainly
must when casting with a longer rod in a purely horizontal plane."

[VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY - FLY TYING FANATIC

2012-01-08 Thread Jimmy D. Moore

This is one of my more popular poems. It can also
be used as a quote. If you'd like me to post more
of my fly fishing poems, let me know. All are 10
guaranteed to make you laugh.

Have a Goodun.

JIMMYD

A FLY TYING FANATIC !

Cotton balls, wine corks, tow sacks, I save'em all.
Craft beads, sparkle rope, doll's eyes, I'm walkin tall.

Mosquito net, you bet! And it's already green, don't
have to dye it. Just try it. You'll see what I mean.

Sewing thread, parrot feathers, and purple yarn.
I'll use most anything, and don't really give a darn.

Closed cell foam and balsa wood. Anything goes.
Why I've even used the lint from between my toes.

Candle wax, bee's wax, ear wax, I use'em all.
Soda straws, model paint bought at the Mall.

Javalina hair& belly hair from an Armadillo.
Why I even use eider down from my pillow.

Longhorn tail hair, my hair and hair from my
cats. I'll even use belly hair from a free-tailed bat.

Black Visqueen sure makes good beetle backs.
Cut'em out, glue'em on, hang'em on the rack.

Thus is the life of a fly-tying fanatic. Could I use
the fiberglass insulation from my attic?

I throw away nuthin. I keep all kinds of stuff.
With my kind of fly tying, there's never enough!

[VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY XTRA

2012-01-01 Thread Jimmy D. Moore
From time to time, when I miss a day or two, I'll throw in some extra
quotes. Hope you don't

mind.

"Fishing books, lit by emotion recollected in tranquility, are like
poetry. We do not think of them as books but as people. They are our
companions and not only riverside. Summer and winter they are with us
and what a pleasant company they are."

Arthur Ransome "The Fisherman's Library" [1959]

"Twice I had the feeling, which I have talked about to other anglers and
they have had it too, of a sudden anticipation of catching a fish so
strong that it amounts to certainty. I suppose it is partly the harmony
of effective presentation when everything else is auspicious, so that a
take seems in that moment to be the only feasible conclusion. But it's
not quit as simple as that, it's ore like a shaft of intuition. In must,
logically, be an illusion; possible, to, you tend to remember it when it
works and forget it when it doesn't. But, for all that, it's a curious
experience."

[VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY

2012-01-01 Thread Jimmy D. Moore
"The recollection of what has been and the anticipation of what is to be; the quiet discourse of men with like tastes, of past successes and of anticipated triumphs; reminiscences of river and lake and forest and camp-fire, make up a series of prospective and retrospective pleasures akin to those experienced by the old soldier fondling his trust matchlock and “fighting his battles o’er again.”

[VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY

2011-12-20 Thread Jimmy D. Moore
"Fish are, of course, indispensable to the angler. They give him an
excuse for fishing and justify the fly rod without which he would be a
mere vagrant. But the average fisherman's average catch doesn't even
begin to justify, as fish, its cost in work, time, and money. The true
worth of fishing, as the experienced, sophisticated angler comes to
realize, lies in the memorable contacts with people and other living
creatures, scenes and places, and living waters great and small which it
provides."

I can relate to this personally, for years I paddled the canoe while my
husband Jerry fly fished. I took up tying in '95 to save $$ as he like
to fish the Rangley streamers that sold for a whole 1.95 at the time.

Then one day in 1997 I sold 3 houses in Lowell,MA called a Triple hat
trick, so I signed up and attended a Orvis endorsed fly fishing school
out in Western MA, the rest is history as they say.

[VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY

2011-11-22 Thread rayado
"My wife said I have so many fly rods and reels
that I cannot possibly use them all. My reply
was that I had rods and reels to fish, rods
and reels to tinker with and then my fine
crafted rods and reels to "fondle and admire,
while dreaming of trout fishing during the
cold winter months. You can imagine
what kind of look she gave me."

[VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY

2011-11-21 Thread rayado
"Choose your fly fishing friends wisely. They can
have an effect on how many and the size of the trout
you catch. Fly fishers who spend a lot of time fishing
together will unconciously adopt some of the other's
mannerisms, choice of flies and casting techniques
over time. Surrounding yourself with great fly fishers
who catch a lot of trout will help you catch more and
larger trout. However, does that mean that while you
as the poorer angler improve your fishing prowess,
the better angler's fishing prowess deterioates? It
could be that as your fishing improves and your friend's
deteriorates, he reaches a point where his fishing begins
to improve by watching you the better angler. If that is
the case, somewhere along the line, both will become great
anglers. On the other hand, if both of you are piss poor
anglers to begin with . . . . "

[VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY

2010-07-10 Thread Jimmy D. Moore
" 'Over the years,' he once wrote,'great minds have brooded about
whether fishermen were crazier than golfers.' There is much to be said
for both sides. Golfers spend hours knocking an innocent little ball
across the landscape, often getting wet and numb in the process, and
return home with nothing to show for their efforts. Fishermen, on the
other hand, spend hours dragging an innocent herring through the water,
often getting wet and numb in the process, and return home with nothing
to show for their efforts. On successful days in both sports, joy reigns
supreme because the participant has triumphed through enormous
obstacles, but at least the fisherman's rush comes from outsmarting
something that has a nervous system."

Hi Jimmy,
at least you didn't brake your leg or even more valuable parts.
I think we both are now close to 10 years on the list, and during this
time frame you had a couple of accidents. Some broken legs, some issues
with Callico, the was a story with a woodworking lathe etc. You should
really be more careful.
I wish you a quick recovery, you will have more time for tying.
And fish from your boat!
But wear a life jacket. You never know!

Hope you heal rapidly. OUCH! It makes me hurt to think about it.

Al

I agree with Allan. That hurts I know.
About six weeks ago I broke a bone in my right foot.
I had grilled some hot dogs and left the pakage they came in on a stand by
the grill. When two of our dogs went out on the back porch they started
fighting over that package, and when I ran out without any shoes I hit my
foot on a chair leg. Definitely a big OUCH!. I limped around at work
for over a week. It didn't help that I had also pulled a hamstring on
my left leg during the incident. So I was limping on both sides.
Now the pain in my foot is pretty much gone unless I stand in one place too
long. I had also forgotten some advice my dad gave me years ago: "If two
dogs
want fight, leave them alone. They hardly ever even hurt each other
seriously."

Jimmy D you have my sympathies.

[VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY

2010-07-09 Thread Jimmy D. Moore

Sorry about missing the QFTD this week. Broke my right foot on Tuesday.
Tripped on a step and sit down on my foot. The break is right behind the
base of my two toes next to big toe. Not much to do about it except to
tough
it out. The steps weren't really steps, but "landings" and were about
two feet

wide, instead of the standard step width. I was wearing sandals and caught
the heel on the lip of the step. Guess I'm lucky though. It could have
been a

HIP !

So . . . here's the quote for today. "Be careful where you step. You can't
wade with a broken foot."

[VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY

2010-07-03 Thread Jimmy D. Moore
"Under the conditions then prevailing - the thermometer recording 97
degrees in the shade, the stream at its lowest point, and the
temperature of the water very high - I really believe that the only
chance he might have had would have been with a very 'wet' Mint Julep."

[VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY

2010-07-02 Thread Jimmy D. Moore
"In the first place, sheer lightness in a rod doesn't necessarily mean
less effort. The difference between a two ounce rod and a longer five
ounce model in ratio to the angler's total weight on the scales is about
the same as drinking half a tumbler full of water or going thirsty."
