Re: [videoblogging] Re: Vlogging with Flash

2006-01-12 Thread Deirdre Straughan

I don't know what magic I'm working (my process is kind of cobbled together), but it works. Most of the videos on my site are standalone SWFs created with Sorenson Squeeze and embedded on the page by DreamWeaver (you're welcome to view the code and see what's happening; I dunno). The SWFs are listed in my RSS feed and they download and play in FireANT, play in Google Reader, and have played in a few other readers whose names I don't now remember.
I have started using FLV files in a player on the web pages only for the last 2 or 3 videos I've published, because I like the control it gives the viewer. I still create an SWF and reference that (along with M4Vs) in my RSS feed.
Everybody has their preferences, but let's try to share accurate information about the pros and cons. It's true that Flash is not good (yet) for non-computer environments, and that it's not revloggable, but I solve those problems by posting most of my videos in several other formats as well. I just don't think there's a clear winner yet for a single format that's going to be good for everybody. It will be a long time before we can settle on a single compression standard, either - it's a constant compromise between quality and bandwidth.
As mentioned, I have had severe problems with some QuickTime files on some sites, and have had trouble installing QuickTime in various browsers; I always cringe when I have to install a new version. I wouldn't be surprised if the story was similar for WMV files on the Mac.
On 1/12/06, Bill Streeter <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:
I'm not saying it's impossible, it's just more complicated, sincethe SWF can be a separate file that won't necessarily work if it'sseparated from the FLV. Also there can be issues with RSSdistribution if a particular aggregator doesn't support Flash
playback natively (like iTunes). And then there is the problem oflack of support on portable handhelds like the PSP or the iPod,which is somewhat related to RSS as many users (myself included) usean aggregator not just for playback but to load the files on to the
portable. So like I said, it's not simple, which is not to say thatit can't be done.Bill StreeterLO-FI SAINT LOUISwww.lofistl.com-- best regards,

Who said evil? If Yahoo wants to provide a free service to users to sell
adspace, so be it.
Like you said, we all use Yahoo Groups. I just don't want to give them all that
extra info
about me just because I belong to a listserv. That's an awful lot of info to
have, let alone
access, just for providing a listserv service. If others don't have an issue
with Yahoo having
access to their internet ramblings, no matter, but it's good to know what they
have access
to and how to prevent that if it's not the kind of access you feel is warranted
just by
providing a listserv service. And anyway, whether it's a question of being evil
or not, Yahoo
and most other corps 'll take whatever they can get so long as they can get
away with
taking it. You could just call it setting boundaries, like in any other kind of
relationship.

[videoblogging] Re: Video Camera for the Undercover Civic Journalist

2006-01-12 Thread Kevin
See, I know that I'm personally excited about these kind of video gadgets for
the sole
purpose of recording 'real life'. It's not exactly professional, but people
change when they
know they are on camera for the most part... so I think these devices would
allow you to
add to a video blogging experience. Maybe good for b-roll footage after the
person thinks
they are off camera. I love thinking of the (non-secret
investigating/upskirting)
possibilities. However, once summer comes along, I'm not sure where you can
stick the
button camera :)

I guess I'm just thinking about my 'people watching' project type thingy, which
this would
be good for at least. I am concerned about legal and personal risks... more
personal, but
it's usually worth the black eye for the right shot. Right?

[videoblogging] Re: Combining 2 flash movies....

2006-01-12 Thread Gena
Not sure of what you are using to edit so this is just an idea:

If you use AVI, QT or WMV you can use a program like SwishVideo
http://www.swishzone.com/index.php?area=products&product=video

$49.99 , EUR €42.91, GBP £29.34

Edit as normal and save in the default format. The open SV and save as
a flash .swf

The advantage to this is that you could join the two movies in their
native formats and then export the whole thing out to a .swf

If you have a flash movie(s) already then QT will let you combine
them. Could be a honking huge file but you could do the same thing.
Mike be a little shakey on the quality. Dunno, never tried it.

[videoblogging] Re: Video Camera for the Undercover Civic Journalist

2006-01-12 Thread Gena
I have concerns about something like this camcorder. I've no problem
with the technology. It is how the humans will use that technology.

I can see in situations where whipping out a camera could be harmful,
particulary during a "police action". Something like this could be
wonderful to document that experience. Or dealing with a goverment
employee who says one thing and does another. That would be a total score.

I fear that is not how a "button cam" will be used. A while back there
was a brief discussion about "upskirters and downblowsers" claiming to
be videobloggers. There are other low hanging fruit who would also
make use of a product like this.

Truth be told I can sneak a camcorder in my hat, under my arm or in my
dress. It has always been the skills, not just the equipment.

If it is a bona fide news event I feel you are on safe ground.

[videoblogging] VLOGDIR's Email Subscription Service- Dreamhost Problems

2006-01-12 Thread Michael Sullivan

To those who use the VLOGDIR RSS Email Forwarding Service, It is currently down as Dreamhost is experiencing technical problems.Should be resolved soon, however.
Your web service is being moved to a different IP address (Downtime)

The apache webservice 'basic-rank' on your machine soto has been flooded.
We identified the cause and disabled the site that was being attacked. To
cut down with the incoming connections, the service also needs to be moved
to a different IP address. This may come with intermittent downtime, as
the DNS will need to propagate (up to 4 hrs).

We apologize for the inconvenience and if you have any questions or
concerns, don't hesitate to contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

If you belong to ANY Yahoo Groups - including this one
- be aware that Yahoo is now using "Web Beacons" to
track every Yahoo Group user. It's similar to
cookies, but allows Yahoo to record every website and
every group you visit, even when you're not connected
to Yahoo.

Look at their updated privacy statement at
http://privacy.yahoo.com/privacy.

About half-way down the page, in the section on
cookies, you will see a link that says WEB BEACONS.

Click on the phrase "Web Beacons." On the page that
opens, find a paragraph entitled "Outside the Yahoo
Network."

In that section find a little "Click Here to Opt Out"
link that will let you "opt-out" of their snooping.
Be careful! NOT to click on the next button shown. It
is an "Opt Back In" button that, if clicked, will UNDO
the opt-out.

Note that Yahoo's invasion of your privacy – and your
ability to opt-out of it – is not user-specific. It
is MACHINE specific. That means you will have to
opt-out on every computer (and browser) you use.

Please forward this to your other groups. You might
complain, too, but I'm not sure if anyone is
listening….

It's about bubbling up good stuff, according to the collective opinion... not seesawing with neg/pos options.  And 5 stars really, what is the value of more than 2 options there?  3 of the 5 are like filler options... dont mean anything.
The 'Like It, Love It Or Leave It' idea will result in 3 pools of top lists. The 3rd is the digg model... just calculating all the total votes per entry. So you get:* Most Loved* Most Liked* Most Votes (either Loves or Likes)
Next is to add ability to rate each video...add that to a vlogs total count, create top lists of videos etcsullOn 1/11/06,

Hola!I'm looking to talk about this whole ratings business... I'm referring to top lists etc... not parental filters and all that.On
VLOGDIR, for most of its life i have not enabled ratings.  I toyed
with it for a while using a simple 1-5 scale and it was referred to as
Karma.
Any rating was a positive rating and would help bubble the entry up to more exposure (If I displayed a top list which I didnt)Today, I had a thought this came after thinking of really complex rating algorithms.
Here is what I decided to implement as an experimentScrew 5 Stars. On VLOGDIR, you can either Like a vlog, Love a vlog or Just Leave it alone. If more people vote that they Love a vlog, then the entry will simply state that...
you guessed it..."People LOVE this vlog" (based on x votes).  LOVE is red color fonted. If more people voted that they just Like the vlog... then it will say so. All else can choose to instead leave a comment on that entries VLOGDIR permalink if they have some feedback.
After some time, I could list the entries that have received
either of these votes and which received the most votes despite the
rating.Later, I can also experiment by adding other variables to the equation such as how many hits the vlog received...
I can also add a series of custom rating scales per entry... like a
1-5 for entertainment value and 1-5 for technical skill etceteraI could also include Feedburner metrics into the equations. Also, I could let people rate each individual video in a vlog, thus giving greater weight to the vlog itself.
These votes can all get incorporated into some Master Top List (I cant believe i just typed that).Let's get back the basic point of this message and that is to let you know that if you can rate vlogs at

vlogdir.com with a LIKE or a LOVE... or LEAVE IT please.Let's try it out... see who bubbles up.  Suggestions?  Feedback?  Bugs?Thanks all.-- sull- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Thanks, Josh.

ha.. yeah i guess yer right.hmm.. are the blipper boys scanning the vlogospheric radar blips?  Mike, Charles? I know you prob have a script to scan this groups rss for blip comments, right ;-)
I'm interested to hear more of your opnions and reviews sull... do you do a services and tools guide on vlogdir?it's been on my long ass to-do list.  the sources you mentioned are good.. but i havent had the time to look for better ones or create one myself.
anyone else have a resource for this?Oh... Waz i dont usually promote my other project, since its technically not out of beta etc...  but you can give videobloggers.org
a spin.  It's like the sister companion project to vlogdir and is made possible by partnering with ibiblio.org who provides the free hosting.videobloggers.org
is a front-end to their hosting... like the ourmedia.org/archive.org deal.  I have not done any speed comparisons so it's up to you to get a feel for it.  I use it and it's typically fine.

Supposedly, they are and/or want to scale up to meet the demands of Open Media Distribution. Blip.TV is faster and more reliable, stable and easier to use etc I have noticed that of late the download speed has slowed a bit but that could be unique to my experience.
They do use some throttling but not sure if that is only on uploads or not.  Blipper boys can chime in.Ha! You said "blipper boys"... I love it.
In case you don't get it... you know when you have a hit webservice when people openly start giving you knocknames in public. It's a cult marketing indicator.
I've not thoroughly tested other free services speed but VSocial.com is an overall great option.Otherwise, if you can afford about $100 a year or less use dreamhost or 1and1.
I'm interested to hear more of your opnions and reviews sull... do you do a services and tools guide on vlogdir? As of yet I've not seen any sorts of tool and tools "guides" and "reviews" rise to the top.  Steve garfield does some, and their's a cool guide for ipod compatible videos though I forget the url off hand and I'm talking more about tools and services not content. There's DV Guid, but it's non-specific. What others have I missed?

[videoblogging] Video Camera for the Undercover Civic Journalist

2006-01-12 Thread Ed Yarrish

Some members of the video blogging community have identified themselves
as "civic journalist".  I wonder if a camera like this will open
up new opportunities for "undercover" work.

http://engadget.com/2006/01/12/the-self-guard-sg-210-button-cam/

I also wonder about the legal and physical risk involved, particularly
when you are not backed by a large organization that can give legal
support.

Some "mainstream" organizations have been trying to encourage people to
be civic journalists.  I noted some of that type of encouragement
at the participate.net web site.  These folks are trying to use movies to stir social discussion and action.

Eh, whatever... I'll send this to the group.
Here's the php script (attached .txt file... just rename to .php).
Feel free to add in the embed code for SWF and FLV.
If you have any scripting experience this should be really straightforward.

Enjoy!

The PHP script is really simple. If you have any basic scripting
experience it should be a cake-walk. I was going to include it in the
Vlogging Hacks book, but then that got cancelled. It may be included
in one of the other Vlogging books that either Jay, or Ryanne and
Verdi are working on.

I can send it to you offlist... I haven't looked at it in a while and
I don't really have time to provide much support.

[videoblogging] Re: Vlogging with Flash

2006-01-12 Thread Steve Watkins
Your embedded player advise is sound and certainly will deal with some
of the quicktime issues. But I really think your assumption about how
many PCs have quicktime installed already is wrong, theres a lot that
dont.

iTunes and the ipod help, they have certainly gotten quicktime onto a
lot more PCs, and the HP computers Ive been buying for work came with
itunes/quicktime pre-installed. But apparently this deal will end
soon, HP dont want to renew the agreement or something.

Quicktime 6 annoyed a lot of people by putting an icon in the taskbar,
and with the stupid 'buy quicktime pro now/later' popups. These
mistakes are partly gone now, but Quicktime7 PC instability on some
peoples systems has created new reasons for Windows users to hate
Quicktime. Fullscreen being a Pro feature is still laughable to me and
is another reason I dont think Apple are all that different to
Microsoft really, Apple just have better PR, better physical styling,
more journalists onside, and quite a nice OS.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Vlogging with Flash - nice pop-up generator!

2006-01-12 Thread Joshua Kinberg
The PHP script is really simple. If you have any basic scripting
experience it should be a cake-walk. I was going to include it in the
Vlogging Hacks book, but then that got cancelled. It may be included
in one of the other Vlogging books that either Jay, or Ryanne and
Verdi are working on.

I can send it to you offlist... I haven't looked at it in a while and
I don't really have time to provide much support.

[videoblogging] Re: Vlogging with Flash

2006-01-12 Thread Steve Watkins
The newer codec you mention is probably h.264

It can also be known as Mpeg4 part 10, and Mpeg4 AVC.

Its a better, newer version of mpeg4 that gives higher quality
results, or smaller files, or a bit of both (depending on what you set
the bitrate to) compared to old normal mpeg4.

But its relatively new, so not the best choice yet because less people
are likely to be able to view your video. It also takes longer to
encode video to h264 than to older mpeg4. And slower computers may
struggle to playbacjk h264. So its one of those things that is
gradually going to get used more, as the slower computers reach the
end of their lifetimes, as Intel Macs make encoding in general faster,
and as more software comes along that encodes and plays h264.

Quicktime is the best known h264 player and encoder, but not the
fastest. Alternative encoders on the Mac include handbrake, ffmpegx
and isquint. VLC is an alternative player. These programs also handle
older mpeg4 that may be a better choice right now, and will encode
noticably faster.

Alternative encoders on the PC include Nero Recode (Part of Nero
CD/DVD Burning application suite), various solutions based on
opensource encoders, various programs designed to create ipod or PSP
video (as these devices use both older mpeg4 and h264) and Elecard
mobile converter.

Actually I dont think Ive mentioned the Elecard software in this group
before. I tried it briefly and it seemed to be exceedingly quick.
Costs somewhere round $40 I think.

http://www.elecard.com/products/product.php?product_id=180

In some testing I did a while ago, the Elecard software encoded one
minute of video to ipod format in 50 seconds, compared to more than 4
minutes using quicktime 7.0.3 to create h264 on the same PC (2Ghz
AMD64). But Quicktime 7.0.4 appears to have speeded up the ipod export
option (which creates h264) so it doesnt look quite so slow compared
to these alternatives anymore.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Vlogging with Flash

2006-01-12 Thread Joshua Kinberg
Did you embed the Quicktime videos in HTML?
If you link directly to the video file the way FreeVlog suggests, then
you will definitely hear complaints about people not being able to see
your video. If you use an embedded player, or a popup window with an
embedded player, as I suggest, its likely you won't hear the
complaints. This is an Internet Explorer issue, not a Quicktime issue.
Quicktime is just as easy to install as Flash. And the adoption rates
of Flash 7-8 are highly exaggerated. You need the most recent version
of Flash plugin to see most Flash video, which requires an upgrade --
no different than requiring viewers to have QT, which they probably
already have anyway.

[videoblogging] Combining 2 flash movies....

2006-01-12 Thread David Meade
I've been toying with the idea of working with flash some. I've found
a few apps to compress a flash movie, but what I hope to find is one
that will append one flash movie to the end of another flash movie and
save off the combination.

Anyone know of a tool (other than full blown Flash ... trying to find
the cheap solution) that will let me paste one flash video onto the
end of another flash video?

[videoblogging] Re: Vlogging with Flash

2006-01-12 Thread Steve Watkins
I dont think these things are myths, ust differences of opinion. The
98% or whatever figure Macromedia use about Flash installation is
probably not that accurate and may be out of date. But there are some
very valid reasons why some people dont like Quicktime, Im sure
Rocketboom would get more complaints if it didnt offer other formats too.

The only way for people to avoid the format nightmares and suggest
that there is one solution that will suit everyone right now, is by
disregarding problems that other people have with the format youve
chosen to use.

Ive stopped ranting here a lot about the merits of using .mp4 instead
of .mov, because some of the potential merits arent actually a reality
yet. mp4 is my ideal because it can be used by quicktime lovers, but
can also be created and viewed with other software that has nothing to
do with quicktime. However, until there are alternative mp4 browser
plugins available, people still have to use quicktime to see the video
in a webpage, so to many people right now .mp4 seems like a
quicktime/apple thing.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Vlogging with Flash

2006-01-12 Thread Joshua Kinberg
I think the whole argument that Flash has the most ubiquity is a bit of a myth.
Rocketboom has always been embedded Quicktime. They have a huge daily audience.
No one ever complains that they can't see the Quicktime video. Of
course they provide other formats too because some people prefer them.
Honestly, the myth that Quicktime isn't supported is more because
people use Internet Explorer on Windows, which sort of sabotages
Quicktime playback (it will not "fast start" quicktime unless it is
properly embedded in an HTML page). My answer to this is to use pop-up
windows with the video embedded, and I wrote a simple code generator
so that people can do it easily:

http://joshkinberg.com/popupmaker

Try it, enter the URL of a video file, add some of the other info if
you want and watch what happens. The link will pop up a small window
with the video embedded. It works for Windows Media too. I could
probably add FLV support as well, just haven't taken the time to do
it.

[videoblogging] Re: Vlogging with Flash

2006-01-12 Thread Bill Streeter
I'm not saying it's impossible, it's just more complicated, since
the SWF can be a separate file that won't necessarily work if it's
separated from the FLV. Also there can be issues with RSS
distribution if a particular aggregator doesn't support Flash
playback natively (like iTunes). And then there is the problem of
lack of support on portable handhelds like the PSP or the iPod,
which is somewhat related to RSS as many users (myself included) use
an aggregator not just for playback but to load the files on to the
portable. So like I said, it's not simple, which is not to say that
it can't be done.

2006-01-12 Thread Jake Ludington

I'm referring to "trade only" shows - e.g., where
manufacturers are exhibiting and retailers are attending - ie., no public.

Having attended that type of show as a
retailer, those shows are lame because it’s a room full of vendors trying
to get you to sell their product. The only story is how many units did company
X get orders for. Of course, everything depends on your focus. If you are
covering a particular industry for trade press, those types of shows might be
very interesting to your viewers.

[videoblogging] Re: Quicktime 7 Pro, Firefox and Windows XP

2006-01-12 Thread Steve Watkins
Try downloading Quicktime again, 7.0.4 came out this week for Mac and PC.

In my early testing on the Mac, QT7.0.4 had faster ipod export option,
much faster, jsut about to try it on the PC.

I dont know what else has changed, other than some hideous music store
window on the library page in itunes.

I never had Windows XP & Firefox & Quicktime problems when using
7.0.3. Just got a new PC this week so fresh install of WInXP with all
the latest updates, latest firefox. With QT 7.0.3 I couldnt get
rocketboom to crash, but it isnt in h264 format either, so Kitkas
problem isnt the same as Davids.

Who knows, 7.0.4 might have fixed the problem, it might be something
else installed on your PC thats causing the problem, or it could even
be something obscure like the graphics card drivers (try updating them
if you know what yer doing with that sort of thing).

[videoblogging] Re: Vlogging with Flash

2006-01-12 Thread Steve Watkins
Probably where you'll see the most use of flash, and where it makes
the most sense, is from the various video hosting services that are
using it. Because it can be expensive or complex for people to create
flash videos themselves, but web serviceproviders can do this part for
people. So there are some video hosting services that let you upload
video in a range of formats and they convert it to flash and make it
available.

Flash sure has its uses, but so do the alternatives. As there is no
'one size fits all' solution at the moment, the ultimate is to offer a
few different formats of your video. Eg create mp4 and host it
somewhere to serve the RSS/ipod/etc "I want to download it' type
viewers needs, then also send that mp4 to a suitable host whose system
creates a flash version of the video, and offer that flash version as
more of a 'nearly everyone can see this so I'll embed it directly into
my blog post' solution.

This situation may not change for a long time. If lots more hardware
video players appear and they all use different formats, then we may
expect that software on the viewers computer will have to deal with
this issue. (as its unreasonable to expect that video puslishers are
going to offer the file in 10 different formats). So for example Sony
PSP software that can download videoblogs, will convert to suitable
format when user sends that video to their PSP. Hopefully other
devices will take a similar approach, but give that software away free
rather than charging for it like Sony does. If this is what happens,
or devices all stick to a common type of mp4, then at least things
arent going to get any more complicated in the future.

Unfortunately the situation is a little more complex than the picture
Ive painted, because theres also wmv, real, DivX and maybe even a few
other formats that some people like. I like to push for a real simple
future where some kind of .mp4 will be a good solution for nearly
everyone, but it probably wont end up being that simple.

Cheers

We found also that there are vastly different credential requirements
if you register as "technical press". That isn't press covering
technology, but as audio/video. I didn't file my own papers, so I'm
not certain exactly how it went down, but we got in with press passes.
We didn't have to submit any samples or references.

A lot of people use flash, but there are a lot of issues with it that
don't make it the Ideal for video blogging. Flash is a great way of
making your videos more accessible to more people since Flash is
pretty ubiquitous. But the issues with it have to do with the fact
that it's not easy to distribute it via RSS.

I post in both Flash and Quicktime and it seems to be a good solution

ah..the Flash question.
for me, Flash is not easy to make.
im also not sure i agree that it looks better.
and i dont like the way it plays.

but it doesnt really matter.
most people who watch video on the web can watch QT, WMV, Flash, MPEG4.
do whats easiest for you.

i simply ask that you make sure that your flash files can be
aggregated in your feed.
whats your URL?

hey niko--

i think its easier answering these kinds of questions if you explain
from what angle are you coming from?
you work for some business and this is research?
youre just wondering phiosophically?
you want to create a site?

on the web, centralization is not the way it works.
there will/are lots of different sites, hosting services, blogging
platforms, aggregators, etc.
you no longer need to be a huge company to create any of these things.
its now a level playing field.

yep, many artists have come to the table first.
i also would love to start seeing video recorded in parts of the world
that are unseen.
this group tried for a little while to sponsor a couple people...sent
a camera to nepal etcbut i think it'll work out by itself.
the best thing to do is to keep educating in the way you think is best.
the information is spreading.
the people who want to share their lives will figure out the way with
the resources they have availble.

broadband and access to computer/cameras...is different everywhere.
i also find that some cultures are not as quick to post themselves
online like the crazy americans.

>It seems like this type of footage could reach the
>masses easier if everyone knew one place where to find it.

ah, you are correct...but the video does not need to be stored in one place.
its easier just to create a site that LINKS to video from the devloping world.
you could do that yourself.
just make a blog...and link to videos you feel are important.
then i subscribe to your blog...and see video of places i may never go.
and you can add plenty of text to help me understand why these videos
are important.
make sense?
the question is: do these videos currently exists?
if not, what can you do to make it happen?

for me, the real challenge is getting people to record their world.
look how Freevlog.org is being translated into multiple languages.
and vlogmap.org is starting to fill out beyond just the US and europe.

blogging, especially with video, may actually be the thing that helps
connect us all.

2006-01-12 Thread Michael Sullivan

yes.i've made mention of this before too.totally confused me... i couldnt figure out why it was happening or how it was fixed for me,  also had some issues with java and firefox.  I think it comes down to memory usage... maybe a leak.  maybe not.
Installing QT7 and using Firefix turned into a nightmare for me... and these are two programs that I always rave about, so it really bothered me.I think newer versions of firefox are more buggy with plugins (media players, java..).
Right now, things are running ok together... but if I have many firefox tabs opened with some media playing in a few... a crash is inevitable.still, i cannot use IE... i just hate it's imperfections.  Maybe vista shit will be better.

RE: [videoblogging] CES/Tradeshows and Access

2006-01-12 Thread Jake Ludington

A question for those vlogging at the CES.

Did you just turn up and do it, or is it better to go for press
credentials? Have you had any problems with companies not wanting to be put on
video - on the one hand it could be good publicity, on the other you could be a
competitor.

Having toted around a camera at this
years CES and in the past for shows like Comdex, I found almost everyone wants
to be on video. Having a tripod-mounted camera out meant companies we didn’t
want to talk to were hounding us for coverage (could have been because we were
shooting HD). I always cover shows as press because it provides a better level
of access to information but I don’t think there’s anything
preventing people from covering the show if you aren’t official press.
Most of the companies at a show like CES paid an insane amount of money and
just want their voice heard.

On a broader note, has anyone experience of the difference
between a public show like the CES and closed "trade only" shows.

I’m not sure specifically what you
are referring to, but shows like Digital Experience and Showstoppers, which are
press only events around the CES tradeshow, are more valuable for getting
stories than the actual show floor.

[videoblogging] Re: CES/Tradeshows and Access

2006-01-12 Thread Ms. Kitka
I got my Kitkast field correspondent Parker into the AVN Adult
Entertainment Expo last weekend and I was told that I must make sure
he had official press credentials. When I mentioned it was a
video-podcast he said that they don't admit a lot of bloggers/vloggers
and that I would have to prepare a professional-quality package with
the following items:

- Letter from Kitkast to confirm that Parker was a field correspondent;
- A description of the show (printed from web was fine);
- Printed shownotes;
- Business card;
- Video footage of the show (Parker supplied this on his video iPod).

When Parker registered he said he had no problem getting in and that
the registration desk even complimented him on how professional the
package was.

The best thing for you to do is get in contact with the media
registration before you fly out to wherever the conference is... and
make sure that they will allow professional quality videoblog media.
Besides, there might be something specific that they will require for
you to get in. Communication is key.

Go and have a great time!
Kitka

seem to be smaller and the video looks better. What is up? Also what

I'm not sure how RB is encoded, but my Firefox crashes everytime I try
to play it in that window. I have to switch to IE just to watch it

Re: [videoblogging] is blip.tv faster than Archive/Ourmedia?

2006-01-12 Thread Michael Sullivan

in-depth comparison... no.But IA has been notoriously slow.  It's not meant for VideoOnDemand but rather for archival storage.Supposedly, they are and/or want to scale up to meet the demands of Open Media Distribution.
Blip.TV is faster and more reliable, stable and easier to use etc I have noticed that of late the download speed has slowed a bit but that could be unique to my experience. They do use some throttling but not sure if that is only on uploads or not.
Blipper boys can chime in.I've not thoroughly tested other free services speed but VSocial.com is an overall great option.Otherwise, if you can afford about $100 a year or less use dreamhost or 1and1.

[videoblogging] Re: Camera question

2006-01-12 Thread wazman_au
I just bought a JVC GR-D240. Basic MiniDV camcorder with a good 24x
zoom, FireWire connection etc., and I'm happy with it. Very well
reviewed on the web, has a plug-in for microphone etc.

This is my second camcorder and I comparison shop very carefully
before buying electronic stuff.

I bought this in the UK for £199. You'll have to convert to your local
currency. It's a PAL format camcorder; not sure if there's an NTSC
equivalent.

Watch out for gimmicks like still photo functions involving a digital
camera memory card, outlandish digital zoom, in-camera
editing/effects. None of these is worth any extra money, although lots
of cameras have them.

After talking to a friend who's a professional videographer I would
not touch a hard drive camcorder. In some cases, popular video editing
software can't handle video from hard drive cams.

Waz.
