Worthwhile for a local Brit vlog ambassador to approach the BBC to ask for a
vlog licencing, non-commercial, mashup deal along with the rest of the
licensing opportunities.

Note that royalty-free is not the same as 'free': you pay a one-time fee
 to use the video, and
the prices seem more targeted at professional broadcasters than vloggers:
 there probably
aren't many vloggers who could afford to pay GBP99 ($200) for a 17-second
 clip of some
 misty mountains.

Still, if you're interested, take a look at:

[videoblogging] Open Source Cinema videoblogweek video

2007-04-07 Thread Brett Gaylor
I had such big plans! But alas making this one video took nearly the
week.

It's the blog for the documentary I'm making about copyright called
Basement Tapes - I've created a site called Open Source Cinema where
I'm asking people to remix stuff that I've shot and submit their own.
I started building people's submissions into this cut:

http://www.opensourcecinema.org/blog/

Still working on the interface of how to make the site more open for
collaboration - any suggestions welcome!

Been watching lots of people's vids when I can - pretty cool to see
the explosion of creativity - remember a couple of years ago you could
actually watch them all!

Cheers,
Brett

[videoblogging] Archiving Files

2007-04-07 Thread Gary Rosenzweig
How does everyone archive their old video data files? We've got some
Final Cut Pro source episodes from MacMost.com running more than the
size of a standard data DVD (6 gigs or so).

We want to make sure we don't lose anything, and it isn't an option to
keep everything on the machine's hard drive as that would fill up
fast. I don't like the idea of having a 750GB (or 1TB) drive for
backups, as that's a single point of failure for a lot of work.

Is there some cool device I am missing that will allow us to archive
tons of video without taking too much time (or money).

Re: [videoblogging] Archiving Files

2007-04-07 Thread Brook Hinton
If you're shooting DV or another format with timecode, using FCP or Avid to
edit,
and making sure to log your clips with correct reel names/number,
just archive the project files, which don't take much space.

The tapes then become your video backup,
since you can always recapture offline clips.

If you're also using stills and audio files, those will need to be backed up
as well since they don't have timecode.

Yes it does however if you do it right, you can just as easily display
the URL in small fonts using a little known (Or would FORGOTTEN be a
better word?) utility called Windows Movie Maker (You know, that thing
that comes with Windows?).

It won't be clickable, but porn people have found ways to utilize the

If you ask a porn website webmaster in the right way, they might even
share a techie trick or two. :D

It is HOWEVER. (Quotes from the article are below)

Wolf, who calls himself and activist and anarchist on another one of
his sites, The Revolution Will Be Televised,

I just LOVE it when the mainstream media and press refer to what we do
as anarchism when in fact what we're REALLY doing is simply
excercising our rights to the press and free speech.

If that's being an anarchist, well then it's NO WONDER why FOX News
loves to crtiticize the rest of the media and press and cry Liberal
bias. Then too, THEY ARE WORSE since they're CONSERVATIVELY biased.

Besides, I don't think Josh has EVER referred to himself as an
anarchist. Have you Josh?

Debra Saunders, a conservative columnist for the San Francisco
Chronicle, applauds Wolf's dedication, but doesn't believe he should
  be called a journalist.

I think that you can be a blogger and be a journalist, Saunders
tells me from her office at the Chronicle. There are people who fit
that [description], but when you're an activist cavorting with the
people you're chronicling, then you are not a journalist.

Really? And just what are local TV people when they cover a rally or
protest for the evening news? Chopped liver?

Talk about a clone of Ann Coulter!

Her own newspaper disagrees with that assessment and has supported
Wolf on the Chronicle's opinion pages.

As well as it should.

The fact that Josh Wolf has strong political views does not
disqualify him from being a journalist any more than the fact that I
am an editorial page editor and have opinions disqualifies me from
being a journalist, says John Diaz of the Chronicle. The fact is,
he was out at that rally, collecting information to disseminate to
the public. I think that makes him a journalist.

Exactly.

Ultimately, Saunders says, it won't be journalists and bloggers who
decide the issue, but the government.

But it will be journalists and us as bloggers who will ask the tough
questions OF the government though.

The courts are going to end up deciding who journalists are,
because, unfortunately, this administration is really pushing the
envelope in jailing journalists, and it won't end with the Bush
administration, Saunders says. It will get bigger as people point
fingers in many ways, and that means the courts are going to decide
who journalists are. You may not like it, but that's the way it is.

On this point, even I agree with her.

Just my opinion :D

Cheers :D

Hi Nick, sorry to hear you're having problems with the tutorials. the one
posted in the link below is a bit disjointed as I haven't uploaded the
images to go with them so it's harder to follow. maybe the word doc in the
zip file might be better as it has examples (this an rtf version are
attached to the post/link below). these are for quicktime. basically it's
creating a text file/text track using the correct codes and reinserting it
back into the qt movie. once u've done it a couple of times it's pretty
straightforward but is fiddly the first couple of times as it's not a
one-step action. so using the other software mentioned in this thread is
probably a more straightforward method. I found Andreas' linkubator very
good also. ( for smil examples). but if u do perservere with the tutorial
have problems let me know and I'll see if I can help out (others here would
be able to also)

Thanks I will try to reach Andreas...

I tried working on these tutorials last night:

and I couldn't get it to work.. Maybe, I'm just not that skilled yet.

Hi, folks. Does anyone know how to go from a video CD (VCD or SVCD) to
a .avi file? Or any type of file?

VirtualDub does this. No problem at all.

Problem is since its Open Source, there's at least two or three
versions of it out there. Best thing to do is Google it.

BTW...Did I mention that ITS FREE? :D

I am working on a project for a nonprofit and am having a devil of a
time trying to find some free (or cheap, if need be) software to help
  me with this.

Like I said, VirtualDub will do the job. :D

One more thingIt only works with Windows. To my knowledge,
there's not a Mac version available. Just FYI.

Hope this helps :D

Cheers :D

Pat - thanks for that. This is exactly the software I ended up using. Cool
stuff!

Oh yeah, I am not genetically advanced enough yet to be a Mac guy, so it
worked out great!

[videoblogging] Podcasters! Our forgotten cousins???

2007-04-07 Thread humancloner1997
I spent Friday night and today attending PodCamp in NYC. They had
about 1,000 people attending.

Videobloggers were certainly part of the mix. What amazes me is that
PodCamp can attract that many people while out NYC VideoBlogging Group
had a grand total of 4 people at the last meeting.

Why are there so many podcasters and so few videobloggers?

I added a couple videos to my Videoblo0ggingweek2007 series covering
the opening night will be adding more shortly.

Here are the links about the opening of PodCamp in NYC 2007:
PODCAMP NYC OPENS WITH PERFECT PITCH

Hundreds of podcasters gathered at NYC's Slate Lounge, 54 W. 21st, to
socialize network. With everyone pitching their shows, talents
skills to everyone else, John Havens let Laura Allen show everyone how
to do a perfect 15-second pitch.
The pitch was perfect. Everywhere, people were studying the cards,
listening and enjoying the show.

Or is it an apple that does that?

Sorry, but the temptation just completely overwhelmed me. :D *LOL!*

what to buy set up so I can use Skype on a cell?
