[videoblogging] Fwd: Roof top film / Pixelodeon

2007-05-16 Thread Jan McLaughlin
Just had a moment to learn what y'all are up to with Pixelodeon.

Beautiful. In every open, non-contest way.

Bravo.

My Wburg.TV partner brought this screening endeavor to my attention, and I
bring it to yours.

If you're curating all this stuff for Pixelodeon, why not parlay all the
work into another venue?

Have not contacted these folks yet, but will for our own nefarious art
commerce purposes.

On another note, I should very much like to vlogvertise Pixelodeon @
Wburg.TV.

We've at least one issue of the video magazine to go up between now and
then.

Perhaps two.

Would love to get you some eyeballs.

[videoblogging] Re: Advice on an affordable/portable monopod.

2007-05-16 Thread humancloner1997
I couldn't agree with Bill Streeter more insofar as monopods are
inexpensive and really help stabilize video, especially when zooming
--which magnified each movement.

I have two actually. I couldn't resist buying one very new and unique
one which is an affordable step down from those things you put
around your body to get steady pictures while running with someone, etc.

It's Manfrotto #560B and is made in Italy. It is the first monopod
that havs three small feet and a ball swivel which allows you to
follow a moving person with an even slow steady motion while they
are walking or running.

I had to pay $159.00 at BH. The salesman told me that it had only
been out a few weeks at the time (I'm guessing since the beginning of
this year). He also said that he's sold one to every person he had
shown it tol

They don't work on commission there I'm glad he showed it to me. He
knew I was working with a $2000.00 Sony AIU larger camera and a HC42
Sony mini-DV.

I have the tiny Samsung to literally carry in my pocket which is great
in bright light close up sound but my favorite is the HC42 which is
now developing problems because of such heavy use.

I sent it off for repair last December they fixed it under the
warranty I had purchased. But it took them a full month to return it
to me.

I bought a new Canon Mini-DV that takes a plug-in mike yesterday which
takes a plug-in mike yesterday because I want to decent small camera
with a plug in mike while my HC42 is off for repair.

It only cost $279. ZR800 is the Canon model number. I haven't opened
it up and started working with it yet.

I discovered a few other things about plug in connectors for my Sony
HC42 that I never knew existed. I'll make that a different posting.

I've been so busy filming great stuff, I haven't had time to even
check my email for days at a time. I hope to be able to make one of
the Flash Conferences on Sat Tuesday but have just been too busy
taking care of a dyi8ng friend and other pressing things.

Yes monopods are a great and deceptively simple solution. I think a
lot of people dismiss them because the concept is so simple. I use a
bogan which is a really good brand and you can get one for like $30
from BH or someplace like that. I love it, and never leave home
 without it.

good idea.
We have an idea that after Pixelodeon, we'll see about putting up the
screenings online.
be cool to let people screen them in other places

the key, though, is getting the permission from creators.
something we'll have to work through.
right now, we're just trying to prove we're doping the best we can to
promote and celebrate all the cool and different kind of video that we
have made so far. Really try to push it into the wider consciousness.

[videoblogging] PodCorps.org

2007-05-16 Thread Jay dedman
here's a cool project:
http://www.conversationsnetwork.org/podcorps/

Doug Kaye is getting 1000 videobloggers and podcasters to become stringers.
The idea is to be able to cover any important event anywhere it happens.
A good example is during the upcoming 2008 elections.
We could form our own grassroots CSPAN.
it's a non-profit effort...so of course all material would be archives
and made available for public use.

Doug's a good guy.
I remember when i first started publishing onlineI learned a lot
from his http://www.itconversations.com/index.html. These podcasts
help me learn about RSS, the history of blogging, etc.

Ill let him jump in with more details.
do people get paid? probably a good question to answer.

Thanks, Jay. Here's a little more info for the group:

** Please register at http://podcorps.org. Free and without any
obligation. ***

1. PodCorps.org is like a dating service: We match you (our
stringers) to spoken-word events that want to be recorded and
published. Matching is done by geography and skill sets.

2. PodCorps.org is a non-profit crowdsourcing project of The
Conversations Network. We also produce the Social Innovation
Conversations podcast, and most of us are the same folks who bring you
IT Conversations, a for-profit podcast.

3. PodCorps.org is a great opportunity to give back to your community
while using and continuing to improve your videoblogging skills.

4. Do people get paid? That's between you and the event producers
with whom you're matched. I expect most events will be recorded for
free, but you may want to be reimbursed for media, travel, etc. If
you're a pro and only want to record events for a fee, that's okay,
too. Just say so in your profile. (Some stringers charge a fee except
when recording for non-profits.)

5. There is no obligation. If we match you with an event, you don't
even have to respond. We want to register 1,000 stringers as soon as
possible, at which time we'll open the doors to the event producers.
It's a chicken-and-egg situation, and we need to start with about
1,000 chickens.

6. Our forums are ramping up to be the best place to share tips and
techniques about recording live events.

[videoblogging] Canon HV20 Vs. Sony HDR-SR1 - opinions?

2007-05-16 Thread Mark Day
Seeing as the Canon HV20 HD camcorder is now below $1000, I'd love to hear
from anyone who has it - or has tried it and has opinions on performance in
low light (something CNet reviews flags up as an issue...) and/or the mike
(which is oddly facing towards the sky and not what's in front of you)

And likewise the Sony HDR-SR1 using the AVCHD file system (I'm
uber-untechnical, I'm just concerned that that might not work with my
not-entirely-registered copy of Final Cut...)

As I'm itching to buy one or the other, opinions (off list or on) would be
appreciated...

Cheers

[videoblogging] Re: Why Joost?

2007-05-16 Thread Bill Streeter
I think the Joost guys are pretty smart. With their track record
anything they put their hand to is gonna generate interest. And If
you think about it the market for UGC video content sites is getting
pretty saturated. The market that is being underserved in the online
space is the mainstream media. They don't want to share their
content like UGC because it cheapens their brands, and puts them at
a competitive disadvantage. So the boys at Joost are putting their
brains and buzz mucle into developing a platforum that appeals to
the MSM and solves these problems for them. Joost gives the MSM a
digital way to deliver their content in a way that doesn't put them
next to the YouTubers, Vloggers and Podcaster rable and gives them
control over where their content is viewed and count the viewers.

My prediction: Joost will fail. Mostly because of all the above.
It's a dumb terminal that isn't much smarter than a TV with no PVR.
But the Joost guys will make out like bandits in their failing
because the market they're serving, the MSM has tons of cash to
throw at them.

I will not be surprised if Joost winds up becoming a staple video
distribution point for many,
but as of now, I can not see it. We have seen dozens of these roll
out similarly with money
and popular founders yet they all seem to offer the same thing.
And most are not catching
 any sparks.

Isn't Joost the new Brightcove and wasn't Brightcove the new
Akimbo which was the new
 TiVo?

I dont mean to rag on any companies here, Im just wondering why
the party would suddenly
be over at Joost. You can buy relationships to match advertisers
and content partners but
where will the audience come from?

 Any ideas?

Its tough to take these kinds of criticisms when you

I always question anonymous comments and articles.

Some shows will stick with YouTube, but the

 so true.

I don't know the terms this round of authors were

I know Youtube can push mass traffic towards any

if youre a popular blog/videoblog...you can get much better than $5
per thousand views.
(this is the reported Youtube agreement, but hard to say since all all
anonymous)

This is Federated's whole schitck...they get popular creators
customized ad deals for bucks.
Blip also has a specialized program, but dont know the specifics.

in the end, creators must always make sure they keep ownership of all
their content.
everything should be temporary licensing deals.
if not, you're just an employee.

and just to shout out for personal videoblogging.

here here :-)

at moments like this it is valuable to remember that:

wordpress is free
rss was developed for free
apache (the thing that runs most webservers) is free
and so on.

most of the software infrastructure that has made all of this
possible has come from a culture that values the sharing of knowledge
(like this list). It is largely publicly funded (research grants,
universities). It is a common good. Just like the spirit of that.
