[videoblogging] VLOGGING POLITICS

2007-12-10 Thread Brian Gonzalez
hey everyone!

so I'm writing this paper for my class *Civilization and its
Discontents* about the new wave of politics that surround online video, like
the racial incident with Loren Feldman back in August, Michael Verdi being
attacked unjustly about his parenting skills, Sandra Soroka possibly hoaxing
a hacking to get people off her back for breaking up with her boyfriend via
facebook, etc.
so I wanted to get a few words about any of those incidents or others
from you guys for my paper, addressing your goals and motives with online
video, where you think it's heading and where you think it should be
heading, what you would change about it, what kind of culture is this wave
of collective art cultivating (good and bad), what your ideas are on
public perception vs creation on account of online media, all in addition to
anything else you'd like to add.

I'll be writing all Monday so the more responses by the end of the day, the
better.
Thanks guys!

Does anyone know off hand the latest version of Final Cut Pro that

Re: [videoblogging] your thoughts on tapes vs HD?

2007-12-10 Thread Jan McLaughlin
At first blush, was thinking that Xacti HD cameras that record to SD
memory cards would prove an interesting solution.

Mailing you the SD cards shouldn't be too much of a problem. Very
small. Perhaps TOO small?

Problem with all of this - regardless of what camera you choose - will
be getting good sound, so placement of any camera near the speaker
(either the person or the sound reinforcement speaker) will be
essential.

The quality of the Xacti HD camera we used at VlogEurope 07 was pretty
darned good.

Xacti files are .mp4; 10 MB for 30 seconds of raw footage @ 640 x 480
on the non-HD model I personally worked with. Darned if I can recall
the model. Imagine the settings may be changed to another aspect
ratio, esp. in the HD model.

Sounds like an interesting project for you :) Let us know what you decide to do.

raw footage will be sent to me for editing, posting, and making into DVDs.
That last point is important: I need good enough quality somewhere that a
DVD is going to look reasonable (especially considering that filming will
usually take place in less than optimum conditions); highly compressed MPG
 may not be good enough.

One problem we've already run into is how to ship around large amounts of
raw footage: these talks run 45 minutes up to 3 hours, and an hour of raw DV
AVI = about 12 GB. Even Sun doesn't have the bandwidth for that to be a fast
transfer, and I certainly don't have it at home.

My gut feeling is that the best solution is MiniDV - tapes are easier to
mail around than hard disks. But I'm willing to be told otherwise. I don't
know the state of the art in HD-based camcorders these days - what do they
compress into? How big are the resulting files (per minute)?

 Any thoughts/advice/pointers will be welcome!

[videoblogging] Re: What kind of Pro camera should I get?

2007-12-10 Thread Earl J. Moniz
Hello Heath,
depends on what type of video you want to shoot? Standard definition
or HD. . .
For my money, I love my Canon GL2. At the time, it had the mosdt
powerful optic zoom (20X) that allows me to put myself on-stage from
the back section of an auditorium during a recital, cantata, or play.
It individual audio controls for each channel of its audio tracks. I
am very satisfied with it - the only drawback. Does not do well in low
light - not as well as a Sony, perhaps - but it does have great range
to dim situations. I've filmed during the active part of a dance
concert using the exposure control on the camera. . . with a dark
result that would be expected under any dance concert performance.

If you're looking for HD, I'm certain you'll get comments from others
before long.
When I go looking for one myself, I think I'll stay in the Canon
family; the GL2 is a great quality product for the price; so I would
pay a little more for sticking with the Canon family, no doubt.

Until that time. . . Earl J.

[videoblogging] Mpeg4 Exports (PC)

2007-12-10 Thread Clintus
So I am working in Premiere Pro CS3 which can import and work with
Mpeg4. Once i bring in my clips, do my edit, and export out, should I
treat it as if they were dv clips? My current workflow is exporting
uncompressed avi's and then bringing them into QT pro and exporting
them out as mov's using the H.264 codec. Does that sound good or
because they are mpeg4's should I do something different? I just got
my xacti a little over a week ago and haven't edited anything yet. Any
help and advice would be awesome. Thanks.

Re: [videoblogging] your thoughts on tapes vs HD?

2007-12-10 Thread Sull
The xacti cameras vary in their ability to shoot in low-light but
generally speaking they are not ideal for this.
You can get good results by changing white balance and iso but it
sounds like you need something that can
more consistently handle low-light well so a larger quality lens
should be considered. The hd1000 does have a larger lens, so if you
want to consider the xacti family, that might be the best choice. or
one of the models that provides lens adapter.

Re: [videoblogging] your thoughts on tapes vs HD?

2007-12-10 Thread Brian Richardson - WhatTheCast?
I'm always very biased towards tapes ... Less compression than flash/DVD
camcorders, easier to archive footage than hard disks, cheaper media
than DVD camcorders, easy to trade footage, fewer strange file formats
to confound your editing software.

A tape camcorder can be converted to a hard disk camcorder using a 3rd
party addon (hard disk or software+laptop), which cuts out the capture
process everyone hates in tape-based workflow.

I recently shot four hours of footage at a Jonathan Coulton concert to
send to Yahoo News on miniDV. FedEx was the best way to get it from GA
to CA. Never underestimate the bandwidth of a stationwagon full of tapes
:)

I thought some of you on this list might appreciate
 this video that I
shot almost 6 years ago. For some reason it had
 completely slipped my
mind until the other day. We live streamed using
 the Linux Public
Broadcasting Network---this was in April of 2002
 (take that Ustream!).
Here's a link for those interested:
 http://freethemedia.org/netcast/index20020413.html

After watching the video, it was interesting to see
 the state of
affairs of new media at that time and the
 aspirations expressed by
many of the speakers that are now within our reach.
 Lots of
progressive issues and how to solve problems using
 new media are
 addressed.

Paul Garrin organized this event, and if you're not
 familiar with him,
you should definitely check him out-he is credited
 with starting the
camcorder revolution by capturing the Tompkins
 Square Riots in NYC in
1989 (before Rodney King). More recently he's been
 involved in
 fighting ICANN--you can read more

I just noticed that My Statistics Counter at Blip.TV hasn't been
working since Saturday. I show no views for Sunday Dec 9 or Monday Dec
10, and extremely low numbers for Saturday Dec 8 which is very unusual
as well. Is anyone else having this problem with Blip right now?

Thanks,

Re: [videoblogging] Portable External Drive Recommendation Please

2007-12-10 Thread Jay dedman
Hi everybody. I need a portable external drive to store video files
whilst traveling. Small in size but big in storage space. Light in
weight and adorable to look at. Any suggestions? Thanks, gang.

ryanne and I had the same need when we went to SE Asia during the summer.
its actually pretty easy and affordable.
we went to the local big box computer store..and bought a 120GB drive
($100) on its own.
Then we bought a FireWire enclosure for like $20.
It takes about 5 minutes to put it all together.

you can by it all online as well if you have time to wait for shipping.

I would really love to figure out how to find h.264 files (not a FLV)

Or, failing that, the source code for this tool would be nice.

[videoblogging] Re: What kind of Pro camera should I get?

2007-12-10 Thread Bill Cammack
Interestingly enough, I'm suddenly interested in getting a new camera!
:D I had been gearing up to get a control surface for Final Cut's
Color application, but I found out that a Wacom Intuos tablet makes
me as fast as I want to be right now, so suddenly, that's a couple of
Gs I don't have to spend.

Meanwhile, I'm planning a new video project which would definitely
benefit from being shot on a nice camera. The camera would be used
for continuous 'work', so yes, it would pay for itself pretty quickly.

I just witnessed the beauty of video from the HVX200 on Jackson West's
shoot for his NYU film. I'm very impressed with how that camera
captures mood and really kind of makes the scene what it's supposed to
be, right out of the camera.

OTOH, I've REALLY been liking http://GeekBrief.tv ever since they
switched cameras to the Canon XH-A1. Their colors are REALLY
punchy, and the show just has this really great look and 'feel' to
it. That could very well be because of sweetening in post, but you
have to start with a great image with lots of definition to begin
with. The GeekBrief setup is here =
http://www.geekbrief.tv/about/credits

According to BH, the base sticker prices on the two are:

Canon HX-A1 - $3,049
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/447098-REG/Canon_1191B001_XH_A1_3CCD_HDV_Camcorder.html

Panasonic AG-HVX200 - $5,199
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/381410-REG/Panasonic_AG_HVX200_AG_HVX200_3_CCD_HD_Format.html

Then, with the Panasonic, you have to keep on spending for P2 cards or
a Firestore, so it's basically well over double the price of the Canon.

Of course, none of this makes any difference whatsoever if you're
'just' going to be using the video for iPod-compatible-compressed
videos. However, with what groups like http://pandonetworks.com/ are
doing at this point, and the entry of highly-funded pro teams working
on sites like http://quarterlife.com , I don't think it's going to be
very long before HD over the net becomes pretty routine. I think it's
better to make HD content *now* and let the delivery technology catch
up with US.

Anybody with experience with either/both of these cameras have any
opinions as far as which one they would get if the business was going
to pay for the camera anyway?

Also be warned that the fake 24P on some of the Sony cameras can NOT
be treated as 24P in post and looks really really wonky.

And I left out my summary: assuming 24P is necessary:

Best value: Panasonic DVX100 (but doesn't do HD)
Best HD option under 10k: Panasonic HVX-200
Best Professional HDV for the money: Canon XH-A1
 Best Consumer HDV: Canon HV20
Best Consumer DV: Sony's cheapos still have the picture quality edge,
while Panasonic's have the interface/ergonomics edge.

The fallout from the introduction of the RED camera is going to change

That said, here's my take on the sub-10k cams I'm familiar with.
You'll note very little Sony or JVC mentioned - I used to favor Sony's

For 24P in standard def/DV you are pretty much limited to the
absolutely excellent Panasonic DVX100 (or its more expensive big
brother, the HVX200, which also does HD once you add pricey P2 cards -
  see below).

For pro for-hire work I still try to avoid HDV except for projects
that are primarily interviews or other material that won't have a lot
of motion. The Canon HDV stuff does a better job than the other brands
on avoiding motion artifacts and blocking it seems, but you're going
to be delivering on DVD, h.264 files or an HD DVD / Blu-Ray pretty
soon for many clients, which means putting that long-GOP mpeg2
transport HDV stream through not only color correction and whatever
other image processing and compositing but ANOTHER pass of temporal
compression. That said, I know others who are using the the higher end
Sony and Canon HDV cameras for professional work. If you go that
route, the HX-A1 is a great value.

If you want 24P in HDV, Sony has one model, but it has pretty crummy

Re: [videoblogging] Re: not your average gear question...

2007-12-10 Thread Mike Meiser
All I can say is watch out for the cheapo cameras.

My bro bought my niece a little digital camera that shoots stills and
video last Christmas and when the batteries die... which they always
do with little kids... it erases the memory.

How's that for less then useless.

Little kids don't care about quality or features like zoom. But the
thing should be durable and run on some standard battery type for long
periods without failing. I recommend something that runs well on AA or
something standard, rechargeable AA's even better... as the thing will
always be dead when the child wants to use it. Zoom and other features
waste batteries... though all kids love LCD playback.

I have no specific advice other than this, other then to say aren't we
all just big kids ourselves?

Always go back to the basics. Enjoy being a kid again. Damn the
obsessions with features, and resolution and zoom. When you remove
everything it's just about the fascination of capturing people and
moments and being able to play them back instantly. Record and
playback, that's what's important. Kids don't do video editing
either, and though they are all eventually devils with computers, even
putting the videos on the computer is far secondary to being able to
play them back on the camera.

this is the passage that ignited this paper:

excerpt from Erich Fromm's *The Sane Society*:
Man, in order to feel at home in the world, must grasp it not only with his
head, but with all his senses, his eyes, his ears, with all his body. He
must act out with his body what he thinks out with his brain. Body and mind
cannot be separated in this, or in any other aspect. If man expresses his
grasp of the world by his senses he creates art and ritual, song, dance,
drama, painting, sculpture.
...For lack of a better word, I shall use the term collective art, meaning
*to respond to the world with our senses in a meaningful, skilled,
productive, active, shared way*. In this description, the * shared* is
important, and differentiates the concept of collective art and that of
art in the modern sense. The latter is individualistic, both in its
production and in its consumption. Collective art is shared; it permits man
to feel one with others in a meaningful, rich, productive way. It is not an
individual leisure time occupation, added to life, it is an integral part
of life. It corresponds to a basic human need, and if this need is not
fulfilled, man remains as insecure and anxious as if the need for a
meaningful thought picture of the world were unrealized. in order to grow
out of the receptive into the productive orientation, he must relate himself
to the world artistically, and not only philosophically or scientifically.
If a culture does not offer such a realization, the average person does
notedevelop beyond his receptive or marketing orientation.

thanks for your time guys!

I miss my Fisher Price PXL2000

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PXL-2000

Actually, I never had one. They were slightly before my time. I miss
the idea of them... the stories of them, and all the videos I've seen
shot on them by various art school types. I've never actually used one
in fact.

I will however always have my jamcam

http://www.flickr.com/groups/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/pool/

Let's not forget that even toy cameras can be much sought after goods
for budding young film makers. A good toy can be the difference.

Steven Spielberg started making films when he was 10.

... or somewhere thereabouts. :)

Just don't underestimate the quaility of the hardware, not to be
confused with the picture quality. While kids don't care about
features they still understand quality.

I'm reminded of this as my niece never ever bothers to shoot pictures
with her POS camera, and who would when they'll probably all just get
deleted anyway. I should have given her my jamcam.

It's not the price even, I bet you could find a perfectly awesome
camera for under $50... or you might even find him a hand me down of
some sort... though 6 years is a little you yet for anything that
might be handed down.

Peace,

2007-12-10 Thread Jay dedman
I've been kind of curious about Show In A Box. Is it something people
here generally recommend? What are the upsides/downsides? Which shows
  use it?

Michael gave a good description of the Showinabox history.
you can also see the list of plugins we're working on at
http://showinabox.tv/wordpress/about/

I get most excited about how the vPIP plugin allows you to post
multiple formats easily with embed code automatically generated for
each one. When someone embeds your video their site, the same multiple
embed code is also available there. really encourages sharing.

I also love the Pledge Drive plugin that Markus is working on.
It will allow you to raise money for your project from people in one
lump sum, or in automatically monthly payments.
Uses paypal.
You'll be able to skin the widget to look and say what you want.

I also love the related videos and recent videos plugin that fills
your page with relevant thumbnails.
this keeps your older videos from getting lost by pointing viewers to
them posts.

The Visual Archive plugin makes it easy to skim your work.
example: http://ryanishungry.com/archive/

We are also sketching out custom WP themes built specifically to showcase video.
we're making the install process much easier...and trying to use plain
english to describe what to do.
video tutorials are in the works.

It's really all an open-source effort to make building a WP vlog
easier...and with a lot of specific functionality for vloggers.
Our time should really be spent on making video and telling good stories!
I encourage anyone interested to join the group:

Re: [videoblogging] your thoughts on tapes vs HD?

2007-12-10 Thread Deirdre Straughan
My instinct is to agree with you, but in a spirit of correct spending of the
company budget, I'm looking at the alternatives.

Raymond, the footage you sent that you said is at the highest possible
quality setting, how many minutes per GB can you record at that setting?

The reviews also talk about battery life with the Xactis being only about an
hour. Is it possible to run them off wall current while recording? An hour
will not be long enough for most of what we're doing, and having to fiddle
with batteries during a talk would be a definite turnoff.

[videoblogging] How can I get that dang tape out?

2007-12-10 Thread Carl Weaver
Hi, folks. Well, my old camera finally crapped out for good. I knew
this day would come eventually. The bad part is that it has take one
of my tapes with it.

Does anyone know if there is a manual override to get a tape out of a
Panasonic PV-DV710? I am not above taking a bush ax to it but hoped
there might be a cleaner way to do this.

I'm down to one MiniDV cam at this point. I hope I don't have to go
back to the 8mm cam...

Thanks,
Carl

Re: [videoblogging] not your average gear question...

2007-12-10 Thread Mike Meiser
The flip does fit the bill. Exactly the features I was decribing.
Little/ no zoom, simple features, LCD playback, uses AA batteries. It
doesn't have much memory, but then 30 minutes for the intro model is
probably fine for a kid.

I'm suprised it's so expensive though.

But then I haven't used one. Maybe it' worth it.

i dont see anything in the forums after a brief glance.
if you really dont mind breaking the camera, a screwdriver will always do it.
honestly, if the camera is brokenit's unfortunately cheaper to buy
a new one. (dumb, but true)

[videoblogging] Point Of View mounted cameras.

2007-12-10 Thread Rambos Locker
Hi everyone, just joined this group and see that what I do with video
cameras is different to what most people are doing. Just briefly, what I
do is mount multiple waterproof cameras to an Outrigger canoe and
capture ocean racing and wipeout footage etc on waves, then edit the
footage into a short entertaining slightly whacky movie. I use 3
different types of cams for that, a Pentax Optio W10, two GoPro Hero3
cams and a bullet cam connected to a Canon camcorder. Basically it puts
you in the driver’s seat of the canoe as I paddle in races and on ocean
waves, thus POV (point of view). Some of the challenges I face are water
droplets on the lens, sun direct into the lens, damage from wipeouts and
lots of footage to edit as the cams are turned on and left running till
the battery runs flat or the tape or SD card fill up.

Any one else out there doing stuff like this or have suggestions?

My Videos (usually under 5 mins ) can be played from the menu on the
right here HYPERLINK
