2008-01-11 Thread Ron Watson
I blew it.

We had unreal scenery this morning, but no good light.

I stayed up writing a couple of articles for dog sport magazines that
are due soon and was tired. I crashed out at about 10 am.

When I woke at 12:30 the snow on the trees had melted. I was really
bummed.

I'll get one done specially for you Rox.

I really liked your lumiere.

[videoblogging] videoblogging rules of thumb

2008-01-11 Thread Markus Sandy
hi,

scott beale of laughing squid twitter and blogged about a fun "rules
of thumb" site

http://rulesofthumb.org/

i noticed that there is a category for video rules of thumb (some
listed below)

does anyone here know any *videoblogging* rules of thumb worth sharing?

markus

RENTING VIDEO EQUIPMENT
Video equipment rents for 5 percent per day. If you're planning to
rent equipment for more than two months, you might as well buy it.

REDUCING YOUR SAMPLING ERROR
Sampling error is an important factor in the interpretation of
television audience ratings. To cut the sampling error by half,
quadruple your sample size.

LOOKING GOOD ON TV
You always look 15 percent more serious on TV than you do in real
life, so try to look 15 percent less serious when you are on camera.

LOOKING GOOD ON TV
You will look more alert on TV if you lean forward. You will look
even more alert if you cross your legs.

FIXING YOUR FACE FOR TV
For TV appearances, match the color of your make-up to the color of
the tip of your tongue.

SYNDICATING A TV SERIES
A television series needs to have been produced for 3 years or 80
episodes before it is an attractive candidate for daily syndication.

ANNOUNCING THE NEWS
It takes about 1 minute to read 15 double-spaced typewritten lines on
the air, or about 4 seconds per line.

I am looking for a video that Aaron Valdez posted several years ago.
Here's a glimpse of the post as was seen in FireAnt
http://getfireant.com/listings/episode?feed_item_id=176031

It was a clip he got at his pblic access station. A guy was rapping
about christinaity. Had kids dancing on the bluescreen behind him.
The whole chant was "the powers on"
If you saw it, you would have remembered it.

Unfortunately, its not on his server anymore, or his computer, and
doesnt seem anyplace else.
Just wondering if anyone might have a crazy archive of videos.
you may have the only copy of this video in existence.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Motion 3 vs After Effects CS3

2008-01-11 Thread Brook Hinton
After Effects has become a standard. There's no way around that.

But Motion 3 is a remarkable and under-used tool. As someone who
always preferred Combustion to After Effects I'm finding it a delight,
though it isn't quite a fully featured app. Motion is no longer the
"imovie" of motion graphics, and in some respects (esp. workflow and
interface) it surpasses its rivals. It would be a shame not to see how
far you can push it.

But a lot of this depends on what you want to do. If you're going to
do serious rotoscoping, you probably need After Effects. Otherwise I'd
use Motion: it's a good app, and you already have it. Then if you find
it underpowered for your needs D/L the free 30-day trial for After
Effects. A lot of people now use FCP and Motion for most of their
work, and go to AE only for specific tasks if they need it.

All of these apps - Combustion, After Effects, Shake, Motion - do some
things better than others even though they try to be comprehensive. I
say start with what you've got, then pick the next one, if you need
it, based on the specific things you need to accomplish.

No kidding! The last time I used it regularly was under OS9... I look

What I like is one video / week gives me structure.

Usually post what I've got, and when I've got something, rush to get it
posted just because the immediacy is a big part of what constitutes reward
for the Faux Press.

Just doing ONE a week means perhaps I'll slow it down for quality over
quantity.

Here's hoping.

Probably not as I've got a buncha backlogged stuff from being off the grid

Re: [videoblogging] Rox Lumiere for Rupert

2008-01-11 Thread Ron Watson
Mahalo Rox!
I miss the islands.
I went to HPU from 92-96.
There's 6" of snow on the ground here. It's beautiful, but cold.
Perhaps I'll do a lumiere this morning for you.
Although I used to laugh at video from the snow when I was living in
paradise.

Aloha,

Ron Watson

[videoblogging] Rox Lumiere for Rupert

2008-01-11 Thread Roxanne Darling
A little public gushing here, I hope you all will indulge me. I learned
about Lumiere from Rupert.
I finally made one today, and I want to thank you publicly, Rupert, (and
Andreas too) for illuminating me about this art form.
