[videoblogging] Newcomer to Videoblogging

2006-05-11 Thread Ian Beaumont

Hello everyone.  I'm a newcomer to videoblogging, although I have
blogged before, as part of the EMC Mediablog.  I have now started my
own blog called Viewpoint, and this is located at
www.geocities.com/cityprod/.  I am planning to do a video version of
said blog as well.

The videoblog aspect is basically down to Casey McKinnon.  Yes, you,
MsKitka, or should that be, Comrade Kitanya Irena Tatania Karenska
Allisov??? ;-)

I have been watching Kitkast and Galacticast.  I, like probably so
many others, would love to see a second season of Kitkast.  Hey, some
outakes from the second half of Season 1 would be nice just to keep us
going.  Actually, I'd love you to do Kitkast every week.  But I am
looking forward to posting my first video blog/podcast very soon.

Well, that only goes and hits me where I live.  I live in Cornwall,
and the story you tell rings a bell with me.  Cornwall has so many
natural coves and harbours that Pirates and Smugglers got rich
pickings in the past.  But for years, Cornwall did have a very strong,
very large Methodist community.  So, it was quite possible for there
to have been more than one.

Interesting choices, Casey.

My favourite programmes at the moment on UK television have to be...

Doctor Who: David Tennant is brilliantly carrying on a tradition,
dating back to 1963.  Like Billie Piper too.  We've got the Cybermen
returning in the UK tomorrow.

Deal Or No Deal: A simple game, with a lot of drama attached.  We
don't have to suffer Howie Mandel and 26 models though, we have Noel
Edmonds and 22 players, 1 picked at the beginning of each show.

I personally have written over 50 articles on television for an online
archive/magazine called Transdiffusion.  The site is a wonderful
repository of information relating to television and radio, mainly in
the UK, but we have a growing international section, called Intertel.
We also blog on various aspects of broadcasting on the EMC Mediablog.
If anybody wants to check out the site, the link is

Re: [videoblogging] 1930-1950 b-grade scifi film serials

2009-03-23 Thread Ian Beaumont
You can do Chromakey with any colour on the palette except for white and black,
which don't key very well at all. Indeed, I remember that during the 1970s and
1980s, UK broadcasters would often use a dull shade of yellow as their key
colour, and it worked perfectly well back then.

Also. if you're going to follow the style of the old movie serials, remember
they were often produced in a hurry, with many serial episodes produced in a
year. There was litttle time for retakes, and there were a lot of wide-ish
shots that allowed for quickness of production. Only key characters or moments
would get close up coverage, so use your closeups sparingly.

I wish you all the best of luck with this project.

Re: [videoblogging] To watermark or not watermark...

2009-03-27 Thread Ian Beaumont
The funny thing is, most people I know think the "watermark" is a sign of
ultimate commercialism. In other words, the budget has come first rather than
quality concerns. So, I would prefer something that wasn't watermarked, as to
my eyes, it would be a sign that they were actually trying to put together a
good product for viewers, putting the viewers first as it were, rather than
something that sells to an advertiser first, which is what TV tends to do
nowadays, everything has to make a profit.

Most of the people I've done it for have wanted it top right, but
whatever works best with where the action is. In my experience, many
of them want it not because they want to watermark/theft-proof their
content, but because they think it makes the video look more like TV,
and thus makes them seem more professional.

It is still a work in progress, but I think I happen to be making some
significant progress on the production that I'd be happy to hear some
honest, constructive criticism on this. Leave comments on the blog if you
like, or reply here on list, I don't mind.

I think I have come a long way and made a lot of significant improvements on
the posts I made back in Videoblogging Week. But please, give me your

I hear you Susan, and agree, but the visuals and filters provided to Movie
Maker users don't unleash as much potential. Content wins in the in, but a
solid-colored title screens with comic sans ad infinitum has become a tried
and true dead giveaway.

And you know what it is most a giveaway of?

Not just that they used Windows Movie Maker, but that they have no
imagination whatsoever.

I dare you to examine the videos I've uploaded to my blog. I've used Movie
Maker for quite a number of things on them, and I've used PowerDirector for
other bits. You'll probably be able to tell which was done on which. But
although I would hardly call any of my videos top class productions, I think
they're decent enough to cut the mustard.

November is presenting it's own peculiar challenge for me. Here's my November.

1. Do one blog post (text) every day on Viewpoint
2. Do one video blog post every day on Viewpoint
3. Do one tweet every day on my twitter feed.
4. Do my contribution to the community NaVloPoMo on the 14th.

I have absolutely no idea if I'll succeed in this. Doing a week of posts was
tough enough back in April. But I'm up for a challenge.

TOTALLY. I really want to encourage all those who want to do the
NaVloPoMo challenge the way it was supposed to be - making 30 videos
in 30 days - it's a great buzz, and I'll be watching! Who's up for
it? Tag your videos Navlopomo, and I'll adjust the Twitter feed at
@Navlopomo so that it's tweeting every video.

I see the two really big draws of NaVloPoMo as 1) the challenge and 2)
  community/collaboration.

I've enjoyed the challenge for the last two years - even if I was only
  75% successful each time.

Last year, though, I realised that finding time to make a video every
day for a month was interfering with my enjoyment of watching &
  responding to other people's videos.

Especially with new baby and new job in a new house and new country.
In the end, finding the time was causing too much stress, so I stopped.

This year, with all the things I'm supposed to be doing for other
people, there's no way I could let myself even start to do the daily
  challenge.

So I thought that, instead of doing nothing, I'd like to suggest a
small game that would build on the community/collaboration part of
  NaVloPoMo.

Hopefully, I'll find some time to post quite a few other videos, too.

I have to admit, I've always struggled to do anything shorter than about 2-3
minutes. I can easily run to 10 minutes without any trouble. It will really
be a challenge if I have to do a 60, 90 or 120 second video. Whatever the
final time limit is, I will probably put a timer in the corner, counting down
to 0.

[videoblogging] A Viewpoint experiment.

2009-10-31 Thread Ian Beaumont
I decided to a different visual style on Viewpoint for episode 2c: I do not
appear on screen at all. Rather I rely on the graphics and pictures to tell
the story, along with my words.

I'm interested in your opinions on this different style of Viewpoint. The
video is at
http://cityprod.blogspot.com/2009/10/viewpoint-ny-23-conservatism-first-big.html

and it is somewhat of a departure for me. But this particular style is one
I want to work on for other possible videos.

There was an encoding problem. I've left it uploading to try again but
won't be home again until this eve to troubleshoot if it still doesn't
work. Ian has seen it though! Phew.

Re: [videoblogging] NaVloPoMo Day 18

2009-11-18 Thread Ian Beaumont
NaVloPoMo Chain rules

1) Length: 90 seconds max. It can be shorter.
2) Your video must be inspired in some way by something from the
previous day's video video. You *don't* have to explain the
connection. It can be obvious or *not at all*. You can draw on a
person, object or activity - or anything in the way the video is made
- picture, music, style, etc.

3 minutes 54 seconds is quite a way over 90 seconds. But never mind, the video
works in its own way. A little bit "BackStory" esque on the thouoght processes
that go into producing these videos. Very cool.

The rules yep I have been and looked at the rules here they are cut copy and
  pasted below

Every day in November, we're posting videos. Simple, low maintenance videos.
Via Facebook, YouTube, on your blog, whatever, wherever and however. You can
do anything you want. As long as it moves.

Tell me where my video ³Day 18² breaks the rules Miguel

I will recuse myself from any comment on this video.

Too painful, far too emotionally painful for me right now.

Re: [videoblogging] It's Done!

2009-11-30 Thread Ian Beaumont
Well, I'd set myself a target.

I failed miserably. I only did 5 days of videos.

However, I do have a reason.

Just before everything was due to begin, my mother died in hospital. She was
78. She'd been ill for sometime with C.O.P.D. As a result, my mindset was
never really in the project. I thought I would have the day I picked for my
contribution as a day off. But no, I was asked to work all day that day.

As a result, my contribution ended up being a quick edit of old footage. Not
what I really wanted to do at all. And my plan to try different video types
and locations just ran out of creative steam far too early. It was a great
project though, and I felt that everybody elses contributions way outshone
mine. But, you know where my mind was.

If I was a little more planned, I'd be doing "Countdown To Christmas" videos as
well. But my head and heart have not really been in it.

Here's hoping that next year will be better.

I just posted my final video for NaVloPoMo09 ... 30 Things in 30 Days.
It was a ton of work, it took up too much of my time, I'm backlogged with
other responsibilities, I'm glad I did it and I'm happy it's over.
