[videoblogging] Potential Opportunity for Podcasters and Video Bloggers with Tivo

2005-12-01 Thread Michael Shipp
I was listening to the audio presentation Tivo CEO Tom Rogers gave at
DEMXPO and someone asked the question about third party content
providers trying to get stuff on a Tivo (and then on to a television).
Tom's answer:

* in opening up to third parties, Tivo was looking for ways to build
community.

* Rogers believes that broadband will play a big role in Tivo future and
that 25% of Tivo users already have their machines hooked up to a high
speed connection with no encouragement from the company. He seemed to
be impressed by the number.

* Tivo believes it can be a distributor/aggregator of content for the
television, in a legal way of course.

Toss in the news about Yahoo users being able to view their photo's (I'm
assuming this is Flickr) on a Tivo and it's starting to look like Tivo
is becoming the ultimate media outlet. Conceivably, individual
podcasters and video bloggers could get in on the action pretty soon. It
wouldn't take that much to make it happen.

If you want to hear Tom's answer in his own words, you can download the
audio file (it's a time index 45:14):

http://www.paidcontent.org/pc/arch/2005_11_30.shtml#052589

If you want a quickie summary of his presentation, I text blogged it
("Tom Rogers On Why Tivo Is Good For Advertising"):

I got it to play on my iBook (Windows Media) but it wasn't smooth. Good

I too come from a architect/programming background (Java,web,etc).

In terms of the actual video, there isn't much programming involved. Most of
the programming will come in other areas. Examples:

1) building a comments or tracking web application on the back end
2) putting a javascript overlay on top of your video
3) building a CMS system to manage your assets
4) building a vlog tools like FireANT

I guess the question is, what do you want to do? Doing an actual vlog (or blog
or podcast) is more of a content play than a tech play.

[videoblogging] blinkx.tv?

2005-10-03 Thread Michael Shipp
Has anyone seen this (sorry if I missed it before -- been trying to keep
up on other fronts):

*blinkx Announced Launch of my blinkx.tv*

"blinkx announced the launch of my blinkx.tv -- a new service available
through its unrivalled video search engine, http://www.blinkx.tv.

At my blinkx.tv, users can upload and store their video blogs free of
charge; they can also enter a search and save it as a "channel", which
will be automatically and perpetually updated with relevant footage.
This personal "channel" can then be viewed as a single, uninterrupted
media stream, either online, or when downloaded to their desktops or
portable video player. In this way, blinkx is empowering Internet users
to customize not only what video content they receive, but also how and
when they view it."

http://www.tvover.net/blinkx+Announced+Launch+Of+My+Blinkxtv+.aspx

I was under the assumption that Blinkx.tv was already up and running.

Anyway, just curious.

Check out the following site:

The author makes a really good argument for iPod video -- an iPod
capable of displaying music videos (a complimentary item to music).

If you're asking what I think you're asking (generate an XML feed of all
entries), there is one tool people might want to consider called RSS Writer:

http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/internet_utilities/rsswriter.html

It's general purpose is to take ordinary websites and create an xml feed
for the site but I imagine it can be used to do what you're asking as
well. It is a lot of copying and pasting but it seems to work. And
like you, I'm not sure why publishing software doesn't do this already.

Flash gets mentioned because the penetration rate is somewhere around
97% of all web browsers. Most likely, any web-based aggregators will go
with Flash for video.

On the other hand, Java's penatration rate within browsers is unknown
and probably inconsistent in terms of versioning. There's one Java
aggregator that I've found that does a decent job, even though it's
beta, called I/ON:

I'm actually surprised that Java is higher than Quicktime, no matter how

Re: [videoblogging] java viewer?!

2005-11-09 Thread Michael Shipp

I can't recall having that kind of problem with Quicktime.  Most of my
recent projects that involved Quicktime/SMIL/Firefox on Windows have
done fine.  Sometimes better than the results on the Mac.

Like you, I work with Java a lot and have done a bunch of JMF work.
I've also done some Quicktime For Java work as well.   I'd be
interested in seeing Quicktime's installation share (web, stand alone)
increase in order to use QTJ a lot more (very robust API, now that
Apple has bothered to actually fix it).

Flash is what it is.  Currently ubiquitous as far as browsers so it's
not going anywhere.  However, I'd love to see what AJAX does on the web
front.  I can imagine doing some cool stuff without the need for Flash.
And if I need media within AJAX, it would seem to be easier to use a
standard plug-in (Real, QT, WM) with _javascript_ integration than
Flash.  I've talked with other developers about this before but haven't
seen much yet (and I haven't had the time either).

firefox tends to have problems  playing some  QT media and wants to
download updates but usually fails.  This has happened to be on about 4
or 5 diff puters over past several months. Annoying as hell.  Even QT7
install failed to help.

But I totally depend on Quicktime
compatible media, both as a creator and as web developer.
  vlogdir.com can handle most media
formats (within the media aggregator) but some features like the
videoblog playlists require quicktime (uses quicktime SMIL)

On the Java side, i used to
work with java alot years back (JMF), then stayed away from it for a
while.  I am now once again interested in using Java and have done so
by integrating an XML based Download Manager in vlogdir.  It takes an
rss feed, grabs the media enclosures and adds them to a download queue
that lets the user choose where to download to... and displays status
w/ progress bars.  Totally experimental, but I think its pretty cool.
Borrows from what you get in desktop apps like fireant and itunes,
minus the automation/scheduling options.

  Flash is something I have
always used sparingly within a site design... never a true believer in
a fully flash based interface though.  I have also shit on the idea of
using flash video in the past.. primarily because of it's lack of ease
for remixing video.  But, I cannot deny it's relevance for Internet
Video and the quality has been improving nicely.  I also think it is
very useful as a web based video preview/playback option and sites like
vSocial have done an excellent job with tools their like video rolls.
So, I will be utilizing more Flash than I ever thought I would months
prior.
