Jeremy Scahill, an independent journalist who reports frequently for
the national radio and TV program Democracy Now!, has spent extensive
time reporting from Iraq and Yugoslavia. He is currently a Puffin
Writing Fellow at The Nation Institute. Scahill is the author of the
best-selling book Blackwater: The Rise of the World's Most Powerful
Mercenary Army.

Democracy Now! is a national, daily, independent, award-winning news
program hosted by journalists Amy Goodman and Juan Gonzalez. The show
airs on over 700 stations, pioneering the largest community media
collaboration in the U.S. Democracy Now! is committed to covering
issues the conventional media avoid and bringing the voices of the
marginalized to the airwaves. Goodman and Gonzalez's engaging reports
feature interviews with activists, muckrakers, visionaries, artists,
academics, and "ordinary folks" who share a commitment to truth,
justice, diversity, and peace.

I-Witness Video is a New York-based collective that uses
groundbreaking techniques to harness the power of video to protect
civil liberties and the right to use public space, particularly in the
context of First Amendment activity such as demonstrations, marches
and rallies. I-Witness Video has uncovered perjury and abuse by police
officers and prosecutors, revealed illegal police surveillance and
exposed official lies.

Big Noise Tactical is a not-for-profit, all-volunteer collective of
media-makers around the world, dedicated to circulating beautiful,
passionate, revolutionary images. Big Noise crystallizes radical
community and weaves a network of skin and images, of dreams and bone,
of solidarity and connection against the isolation, alienation and
cynicism of capitalist decomposition. Big Noise is tactical because
our
media is a part of movements, imbedded in a history of struggle.

Glassbead Collective, based in New York City, brings together
individuals from diverse academic and professional backgrounds
including video art, film, theater, architecture, photography, music,
mathematics, fine arts and philosophy to create works which
re-contextualize culture and the world in which we find ourselves
today. Glassbead was founded in 2002 with a multimedia theatrical
performance of Jean Paul Sartre's No Exit. They have produced various
live art events and films experimenting with a multi-disciplinary
approach to contemporary issues (mixing visual and literary narratives
in real time) as well as created live visuals for groups such as
Billionaires for Bush, The War Resisters, Brooklyn Media Lab, GRACE
(Global Resource Action Center for the Environment) at the Bonnaroo
Music and Arts Festival among others.

Indymedia is a collective of independent media organizations and
hundreds of journalists offering grassroots, non-corporate coverage.
Indymedia is a democratic media outlet for the creation of radical,
accurate, and passionate tellings of truth. There are currently over
one hundred and fifty Independent Media Centers around the world. Each
IMC is an autonomous group that has its own mission statement, manages
its own finances and makes its own decisions through its own
processes.

[videoblogging] hacking a flip for wide angle lens?

2008-09-08 Thread noel hidalgo
http://epicureancyclist.blogspot.com/2008/09/introducing-flip-ultra-wide.html

Hack your Flip
I’ve had my Flip Ultra for a few weeks now and I feel like I can give
a good review of it. There’s a lot to like and as long as you don’t
expect it to act like a Canon XL2 then I think you’ll be okay.

  --

What really piqued my interest about this nifty device was this post
by Kirk Mastin on his. In it, he literally tapes a Flip to his pro
video camera to capture the same footage and edits it the same way.
The result? Well, it looked pretty darn good (for web use) when
stacked upon the pro gear. The lesson is that technique/compelling
content will trump technology every time.

I’m not going to go too deep into the geek spec review details, but
talk about it in practical use.

All about the battery..
Firstly, I chose the Flip Ultra over the newer Mino because of the
battery. The Ultra takes AA and the Mino has an internal rechargeable
battery (that must be charged via USB). When I’m on a bike tour, I
can’t really tell when I’ll run into a USB port in the wild. However,
I’m pretty sure I can track down a gas station to buy some batteries.

On my recent tour (just 3.5 days), I went through 4 pairs of
rechargeable AAs. I didn’t run into a free standing USB port anywhere
on the trip.

The form factor is pretty small and it fit (unmodified) in the breast
pocket of my seersucker shirt and would also probably fit without a
problem in the back pocket of a jersey. This is great if you want to
record your riding, your commute or some cager doing stupid. When I
ride, I use a Joby Gorillapod (the SLR model…which btw CAN”T hold up
an SLR) wrapped around my handlebars. The mass of the camera is low
enough that it holds it pretty steady.

Now for the fun stuff.

Making it a Flip Ultra WIDE…
The lens on the Flip is about a 38mm by most reports (yawn). It’s a
pretty boring/normal focal length. Not quite the length for narrow
depth of field and not wide enough to make dynamic feeling wide shots.

I’m a photojournalist at heart and I see everything wide. If I could
live with one lens it would probably be a 24mm.

So….I did a few things to my Flip to better accommodate MY needs.

First, I knew when I was going to edit the video I would do it in a
16:9 aspect ratio. So, I took some electrical tape, cut it in half and
taped an approximate crop on the screen. No harm. No foul. Your
warrantee is still good
  --

  --

BUT, I wanted the optics to be wide too. So, I bought a cheapie wide-
angle lens adapter kit made for more sophisticated camcorders (the one
I bought was made by Sunpak). The wide angle lens kit I bought came
with a series of step-down rings. I took one of the rings and roughed
it up with sandpaper (from a patch kit) and super glued it to the
front of the Flip (be sure to glue it so you can still remove the
battery cover!). This gave the front element some threads so I could
screw on the wide angle lens!

  --

  --

What follows is pure awesomeness. Not quite an Oscar worthy for
Technical Achievement, but close
  --

Now you have a Flip Ultra that can shoot a “normal” focal length that
you can convert into a wide-angle action machine. It gives your
footage a bit more dynamic feel and it also mitigates the small camera
shake quite a bit!

I used this set up for my recent trip and it worked great. I did note
some possible and simple room for improvements on the Flip for action
based Videography. Flip, if you’re listening..here they are:

-a red indicator LIGHT on the BACK as well as the front that tells the
user instantly it’s recording! I found myself losing some time
checking the screen and making sure the counter was red, which was a
hassle while I was riding my bike.

-an INSTANT on/record setting, so you can just use the jog button to
turn it on and record simultaneously. I was late for a few shots
because I had to turn it on, wait for it to load, then hit the red
record buton.

-the addition of a simple Mic IN would be AWESOME!

I think the Flip is a great tool for bike tourists and
photojournalists. The HOLGA camera of the video world. In the right
hands it can produce some great content!

[videoblogging] using flip cameras for special need education?

2008-09-02 Thread noel hidalgo
my buddy, scott trudeau, sent me the following fundraising link to buy
flip cameras for his alma-matter. i was wondering if someone on this
list had a contact at FLIP? if done right, i think this would be an
amazing pilot program!

if you don't have a contact at flip, i hope you consider donating a
few bones... i just chipped in $30.

more info at
http://www.donorschoose.org/donors/proposal.html?id=201954&challengeid=18907
"I teach with a special education teacher in a sixth grade Language
Arts classroom. This co-teaching classroom has a diverse population of
students from culturally different households, and students with
diagnosed learning disabilities.

In literacy(reading and writing) students who are challenged, whether
they are special education or not, need various strategies to stimulate
interest in literacy through digital storytelling. Having brought my
own personal video flip camera into class last year generated
tremendous interest in writing and filming their stories.

All throughout the year my students are reading novels which the
elements of a story are taught. The students need to know setting,
characterization, plot, climax, and theme. I hope to accomplish an
excitement of understanding the novel through writing and reading. By
using the flip cameras to film characterization, plot, climax, theme
or the stories the students have created to show connection and
understanding of the book. Having flip cameras will provide excitement
and an interest to write and read which will improve their literacy
abilities.

With your donation my students will have the opportunity to become
successful readers and writers.

My students need 3 "Flip" Video Cameras for digital storytelling. The
cost of this proposal is $654, which includes shipping for any
materials requested and fulfillment."

[videoblogging] Can't attend the DNC/RNC? EpicFU, The Uptake & Remix America needs your help.

2008-08-20 Thread noel hidalgo
We need a few good encoders!

EpicFU < http://epicfu.com >, The Uptake < http://theuptake.org >,
Remix America < http://remixamerica.org >, and The Denver Film School
are looking for your help during the two upcoming political
conventions. As we are just days away from the American Political
Olympics, we need volunteers to help us digitize morning political
shows and nightly news programs. This will culminate in a cobranded
nightly newscast with EpicFU, The Uptake, Remix America, The Denver
Film School and YOU (That's right, we'd add your name to the
list!)

We are looking for people who have DVRs / encoding systems OR Remix
America will buy you an EyeTV or a SageTV box. You must be willing to
capture the political punditry squawking away their play by plays. The
game plan is to have 5 volunteers capture footage, encode it, annotate
it and then upload it to an asset management system for our team of
remixers, editors and citizen journalists.

It is my job to ensure you have a time slot and all of your questions
answered. If you are interested, shoot me an email <
[EMAIL PROTECTED] > or call me at +1.937.218.2422.

You can also refer to this blog post < http://blog.remixamerica.org/?p=341 >

I really hope you can help us, or at least help us find peeps.

Re: [videoblogging] Kaltura - crazy web editing tool

2008-08-08 Thread noel hidalgo
thanks jen for mentioning < remixamerica.org >! kaltura happens to be
one of our technical partners, and while i can't speak for kaltura i
can say we've been quite impressed with the tool. on the other hand,
our remixers have found the software too simple. if you hop into the
editor we have at remix america, and then click on the advanced
editor, you'll find an online suite that kicks ass. alas, like all
other online "cloud" tools, it has it's drawbacks.

as for the drupal AND wordpress plugins, they will provide you with an
in browser/site editing tool like you see at < remixamerica.org >. at
the end of the day, we are their ginny pig. any crits you have of
their tool, we feed it right back to them (ie flat files, rss,
collaborative editing, etc.). while you might not be a remixer, feel
free to use us a test bed, AND if you do start making some remixes,
we'd love to feature you on the site (which by convention time is
gonna look awesomer!).

[videoblogging] distributive media monitor / capturing systems & mini personal update

2008-08-04 Thread noel hidalgo
since coming back from my around the world journey, i've now found
myself working for a kick-ass non-profit that promotes remixes and
mashups < www.remixamerica.org >. as we navigate the murky ocean of
online video, i hope all y'all don't mind if i ask a few questions.
since all y'all have been extremely helpful in my endeavors, i PROMISE
that what ever help the videoblogger community gives Remix America, we
will ensure our work gives back to the videoblogger community. it's a
promise i pin my name on.

so Remix America is going to the DNC / RNC (that's short hand for the
two American political conventions). while we are at both conventions,
we will be mashing up interviews, speeches and the like... we'll be
sharing our content with a consortium of citizen-journalists and
online video producers - theUptake.org, EpicFU, Denver Film School,
and we're talking to a bunch of other outlets this week and next...

any-who, we are currently trying to figure out a "soup-to-nuts"
solution for the DNC/RNC where people from around the world can
digitally record "on-air" content and then upload it to an asset
management for all of us to use as source material. ideally we will be
working with a bunch of volunteers capturing "on-air" political
pundants doing their thing and saying their hootenanny. while
conceptually, this is easy to understand, the team at Remix America is
a bit perplexed on a soup to nuts solution.

first, as experienced video editors do you have a preferred workflow
for digitizing "on-air" content?

second, let me tell you about our goals...
- we'd like to have 6 to 10 volunteers plugging in "out of the box"
PVR/DVRs into their computers to digitize "on-air" content.
- at the end of the capture, the MPEG formatted video would be
uploaded to a central asset management system (we have access to a
video asset management system).
- citizen journalists / remixers / mashup artists can then login to
asset management system to view / download raw content for their
remixes / mashups / etc.

on the product front, things seem to be fairly straight forward.
- on mac, just grab an eyetv 250 plus < http://tinyurl.com/6a5h37 >.
plug, record, play, and upload.
- on windows, "soup to nuts" solutions seem to be a bit more diverse.
according to my research, SageTV contains all the components for an "out of box" solution we desire.
does anyone have any other windows based recommendations?

how you can help us all...
1. what's your preferred workflow for digitizing "on-air" content?
2. express interest in being a media monitor... the first catch,
you'll need to have a cable connection. second, tell me if you have
equipment or if you'll need equipment.
3. do you have any tips that can help us?

cheers.
noneck

jay, thanks for this snip. i too was at the presentation and the most
important part of the presentation is stated in the first paragraph.
(and also stated last night on CNN). if you want to dominate and be

Obama has used old school organizing with modern technology. from day
one, Obama has had a smart and adaptable CTO who understands the power
of concentric networks and has employed people with a diverse
background. one part of the presentation that really stood out was the
admission that the new media team comes from all walks of life.
everyone was on board to do something unexpected, undocumented,
unscripted and unproven. all in all, they came to explore their
previous skills and pioneer the future.

[videoblogging] Vloggers or Videographers heading to the Democratic & Republican National Conventions

2008-07-16 Thread noel hidalgo
To Vloggers or Videographers heading to the Democratic & Republican
National Conventions,

hi'ya. for those of you who don't know me, i'm the community manager
for www.remixamerica.org - we're a non-profit that explores the space
of remixes and promotes remixers. since we explore the limitations of
fair-use and promote free-speech, we are heading to the Democratic and
Republican National Conventions.

we are in the process of coordinating our efforts with indie camera
crews / vloggers / videographers. if you are planning to attend,
please shoot me an email and lets see how we can coordinate resources.
for the DNC, we have hired a few remix editors and have established a
basecamp. we would love to network with as many "on the ground" teams
as possible. also, if you know of someone or some group that is
already establishing a multi-media tent, please connect some dots...

please shoot me a private email at [EMAIL PROTECTED] and tell me
your plans. let's see how we can bring some video magic to the the
doldrum of network news.

[videoblogging] NYC Wed night - Obama and Politics 2.0: Documenting History in Real Time

2008-07-14 Thread noel hidalgo
[if you are into messaging, politics, documentary, etc... you've got
to check this out... http://www.frogdesign.com/obama/]

frog design, Fast Company, and NYU's Tisch Interactive
Telecommunications Program present a design mind speaker series event:

Obama and Politics 2.0: Documenting History in Real Time
Arun Chaudhary, director of video field production for Barack Obama,
in conversation with Ellen McGirt, senior writer for Fast Company

Wednesday, July 16, 7pm
19 W 4th St. Room 101
(b/w Mercer & Greene)
New York, NY 10012

The National Journal writes that when Arun Chaudhary was a teenager,
his father asked him why he didn't want to get into politics. "I
can't, Dad," he recalled saying. "I have a funny name." Now Arun
Chaudhary is as close to politics as one can be: He took leave from
his day job — professor at the NYU graduate film school — to become
Barack Obama's director of video field production.

After nearly a year on the campaign trail, Chaudhary has posted more
than 850 videos on the BarackObama.com website and on YouTube. His
short clips from Obama's town hall meetings, big rallies, and
on-the-road moments draw an average of 10,000 viewers each. They have
become a cornerstone of a campaign that has brought into the realm of
political communication the concept of web 2.0: collaborative formats,
micro-crowds, and social aggregation. A new type of political auteur
in the age of YouTube, the 32-year-old filmmaker has developed a
unique style that is innovative, fresh and—like the
candidate—challenges convention. Chaudhary playfully remixes elements
of amateur video, polit-documentary, CNN B-roll, TV spots, cinema, and
behind-the-scenes outtakes into a vibrant, eclectic, and authentic
voice of the campaign.

Ellen McGirt is a senior writer at Fast Company and author of its
April 2008 cover story "The Brand Called Obama."

Doors open at 6:30. Beer, wine, and light refreshments will be served.
Space is limited, so please RSVP to ensure your spot on the list.

2008-07-05 Thread noel hidalgo
due to caleb's awesome review of the HF100, i picked one up. at B&H,
they sold me a kit with camera, two 8 gig cards, wide angle lens (w/
macro conversion), bag and extra battery. since they no longer have
the extra battery in stock, the kit is not offered on their website.
if you are in the NYC area, you can pick up the kit from the b&h
superstore and they will mail the battery once it is in stock.

caleb, can you describe the wireless mic you have?

Re: [videoblogging] what will be the impact of voter generated remixes on the election?

2008-07-05 Thread noel hidalgo
thanks brook!

your comments are inline with the general perception of how the short
form will impact these campaigns. while the crazy ones (like me) think
that there might be some type of measurable impact. over the course of
the elections (since we're not just voting for president), i'm keeping
track of some stats to measure the impact of shorts on the web. while
i'm sure the highly negative videos might show a noticeable spike in
the American Web demographic, i'm thinking that the positive videos
will sustain a candidate (especially, when the candidates ask their
supporters to make their own campaign videos and the campaign will pay
for it to be aired locally.)

btw, our friends at Wreck and Salvage have uploaded a few of their
episodes ( http://remixamerica.org/members/wreckandsalvage ). we hope
that you have some time over the weekend to upload some of your
political commentary for the world to crack.

[videoblogging] what will be the impact of voter generated remixes on the election?

2008-07-03 Thread noel hidalgo
What do you think will be the impact of voter-generated videos?

Over the past few months, the team at RemixAmerica.org have wondered
the same. If we look at the Obama campaign and search YouTube, you
will find - Vote Different, will.i.am's "Yes We Can," Obama Girl, The
Empire Strikes Barack, and Baracky - just to name a few.

Yet YouTube's term's of service has already brought down The Empire
Strikes Barack and Baracky. (btw, you can find them at
RemixAmerica.org - but ask yourself how many others are censured?) So
we at www.RemixAmerica.org are publicly beta launching to enlist your
input.

Over the past few weeks, we've dusted out the bugs, washed the
windows, and organized the furniture for a little 4th of July
celebration. If you have a few minutes this weekend, check out
http://RemixAmerica.org - I promise you a treat.

http://RemixAmerica.org is the new home for remixers and video
remixes. We are a non-partisan, non-profit project of Declare
Yourself. Through RemixAmerica.org you can participate within the
political medium of video remixes, mashups and video comments. Not
only can you use our software to easily create your own remixes! BUT
you can join the discussion by using your webcam to "talk back."

Through our "American Playlist," we make it easy to combine today's
political debate with America's great ideas and historical speeches --
from the Gettysburg Address to Kennedy's Inaugural to Dr. King's
speeches -- we give you the power to remix America's greatest moments.
Check out our blog for highlights, http://blog.remixamerica.org

If you are a remixer, we would love to feature your work. Upload to
http://RemixAmerica.org today, and we promise you an informed and
engaged community.

If you are a citizen journalist, cultural producer, community
organizer, activist, volunteer, campaign worker and have videos to
share, upload them to http://RemixAmerica.org. We want to explore the
impact of video remixes around America. We want to hear your voice and
see your thoughts.

Also, we have noticed that there is no global discussion list for
remixers. SO we have set up a google group at <
http://groups.google.com/group/videoremix >. We hope that you join the
mix and help us develop a global network of creators.

In short, we are ready to see your creativity. If you think we need to
change ANYTHING, please email me < [EMAIL PROTECTED] > and I will
make sure your questions, comments, complaints, or problems are
addressed.

We look forward to seeing you and we really look forward to your comments.

>From the staff of www.RemixAmerica.org - Fred, Erika, Noel, Ali &

[videoblogging] WNYC is looking for a web/radio producer

2008-05-23 Thread noel hidalgo
We're also hiring a studio tech guru engineer, but one thing at a time -
Do you know a web producer/editor to work on this great new
progressive tv/web show? We need a sharp writer.

GRITtv with Laura Flanders is looking for someone as smart, radical
and engaged as you are, with great computer skills, to run our blog
and update Laura's site. It's an indie-media-level-paid gig, but with
health insurance.

We're going to be a subdomain of FireDogLake in about a week; we're
posting bits of the show on their main page now.
http://firedoglake.com/author/5923/
http://firedoglake.com/2008/05/22/grittv-war-inc/
http://firedoglake.com/2008/05/21/grittv-roundtable-working-more-earning-less/

www.grittv.org lists the links and upcomings and last week on type of stuff.
This is a content position - writing short blog entries with
hyperlinks on tight daily deadlines has to be second nature, along
with turning around a Blip file and embedding it in a WordPress site.
Bonus points for familiarity with Final Cut Pro, but not crucial.

It's a great show, and a very fun workplace for the right person. How
often can one get a salary to work on politically interesting media?
We're hoping to find someone through our personal networks, because
the wide-open-mind politics end of it is so crucial - please send
anyone you know for the gig our way. The opening is immediate, but we
need to find The Right Person...

We're also showing people's short videos and doing a docs-in-progress
segment GOT DOCS? if you know anyone making work . . .
cheers

WOW, these are really great tips. i've been using drupal for the past
year for luckofseven.com and use the video module and blip. i first
upload my video to blip and then place the FLV source into the video
node content field, then there is a field for "enclosures" and add the
blip.mov/m4v location... for the sanity of my digital marriage, i just
promote my blog RSS feed...

one thing that i louve about drupal is the multiple approaches to one

travel around producing DIY content. i'm primarily talking about gap

as today marks my 207th day around the world, in four short days i

on the 2nd Feb @ 5pm join me in billyburg, bklyn at spuyten duveil for

[videoblogging] help out Video Volunteers and Channel 19

2008-01-24 Thread noel hidalgo
back when i was in india, i stumbled across Video Volunteers. this

Dear Friends,

Video Volunteers has been selected to participate in "America's Giving
Challenge,' a novel online fundraising competition sponsored by
'Global Giving' and Parade Magazine, the best-selling Magazine in The
US.

In the competition, the top four organizations that receive the most
contributions by Jan 31st--NOT BY AMOUNT OF CONTRIBUTION BUT BY
NUMBERS OF CONTRIBUTORS--will receive $50,000 grants.

Video Volunteers has already received over 115 online donations, and
are one of the leaders in the competition, out of 400 organizations.

We have a real chance of winning, which is why we're asking for your
support today.

Please take a moment and click on the link below and give $10 (or
more.) The page that opens will explain clearly how to enter your
credit or debit card info.

About our work: Video Volunteers and our partners have launched a
series of 'Community Video Units' across India, in which community
members produce and screen films full-time to thousands of people a
month, to empower, educate, inspire and inform local people. See
www.videovolunteers.org for more information, and watch Channel 19
(www.ch19.org), a new 'online channel' that showcases the films made
by communities and the impact they are making.

Please also spread the word to others who are interested in the use of
media to accelerate change. Global Giving will also provide a matching
grant of $1000 to the organization that gets the most donations in the
next 24 hours, so please donate today.

this is great!!! just great! i'd like to throw in two more examples of
community funding. without a doubt, i can testify that it works!

- around america 2.0 - http://aroundamericaproject.com/ - traveled
around america on the hospitality of the internet. matt did not use a
fundraising widget.

- luck of seven - http://luckofseven.com - currently traveling around
the world on the hospitality of internet contributions. on the other
hand, i did use a chip in widget and have promised a children's book
in return for their contributions.

if anyone is interested in traveling, vloging and looking to fundraise
at the same time, shoot me your questions. holla!

btw, for those of you who have been following my trip... i will not
make it to antarctica. instead, i'll be wrapping up my stay here at
the end of the world and head north to brazil. don't fear, i'm now
looking at "official" government solutions to the seventh great white
south.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: NYCLU Sues NYPD for Harassing Photographers

2008-01-08 Thread noel hidalgo
jonny keep in mind this is not the ACLU but the NYCLU. for the past 50
years the NYCLU has faught harder than anyone elese to keep the
liberties of nyc residents. last year, they (the NYCLU) was at the
forefront of NYC's photographer license scheme. oh sure they turned
around to fight against it, but they are also the one who entered
negotiations with the NYPD to create the sheme. (shaking head)

also note that NYC's freedom to assemble is equal to Egypt's freedom
to assemble. over 50 people for anything not sanctioned by the police
is subject to imprisonment. yup, that's right NYC is as free as one of
the most liberal arab countries. :)

so if you really care about your NYC liberties, don't just follow...
rock out your voice!

[videoblogging] introductions / questions & thoughts on mobile editing...

2007-11-14 Thread noel hidalgo
hello all y'all.

my name is noneck and i've been traveling around the world for four
months and still have three more months. for background, i'm working
on a "open sourced" global documentary aptily named "on the luck of
seven." for seven months, i'm traveling around the world blogging and
vlogging my way seven topics that surround free culture. more can be
read at < http://luckofseven.com >.

first, let me tell you my getup...
- macbook (2gig core duo, 2 gb memory, upgraded 180 gig hard drive 7200 rpm)
- final cut express
- external LaCie 250Gb 7200 rpm hard drive (too heavy to cary, but
i've made it this far)
- sony HDV-A1U
- i do everything in 1080i HD. you can not dissuade me from switching.

i'm writing this email for two reasons...

one.
thoughts on bus powered hard drives for mobile HD editing...
i'm desperately looking to replace my external LaCie 250Gb 7200 rpm
hard drive that is a freakin brick and a half. the device weighs as
much as my clothing (i don't carry much) and find myself unable to lug
all of my equipment when i'd like to edit. so, i have been researching
bus powered devices. i know i can easily walk into a store and
purchase an external firewire powered (or USB) hard drive but am
limited to 5200 rpm AND i don't know if the drive speed is quick
enough for HD editing in final cut express.

if 5200 is too slow, i've also been thinking of building my own
external HD from OWC's external bus powered enclosures and grabbing a
200 gb 7200 rpm.

since i am a poor fool, i don't have money to experiment. anyone have
recommendations on mobile HD editing?

two.
thoughts on being timely...
since i'm filming my interviews as a documentary and not just a vlog,
i find myself collecting more video than i can process. so instead of
sitting down and waiting for tape content to encode, i've been
thinking of finding a second hand held digital camcorder that's
suitable for a second perspective shots and quick turning around
interviews...

there is several catches, i'd like something compatible with a mac, i
want something that is in HD, has an external mic connection, and can
rock a wide angle or fish eyed lens.

since the release of sanyo's hd1000, my jaw has dropped and my heart
throbbed. does anyone have one? how's the external sound jack? have
you used it with a wireless microphone? how's the battery life? oh,
and the lens... is it bitchin?

sanyo's hd1000 - <

ok, so if you haven't used that camera, which camera would be suitable
replacement? oh and since i'm a poor fool, do you know anyone at
sanyo?

cheers!
