[videoblogging] Women video content creators

2009-12-27 Thread synchronistv
Hi All!

I'm working on a new site which is intended to empower, promote and monetize
online video content that has been created by women (It has been my experience
in nyc that there are far fewer women creating video content than men, despite
the fact that women view video at almost the same rate as men).

We are in the very early stages of this venture but would love to know what
video content and female video creators are out there that we might not know
about- so if you are a woman and a video creator I would love to know who you
are!

feel free to contact me with any questions...

best,

Kathryn Jones

[videoblogging] unexpected benefit of posting to blip

2007-12-21 Thread synchronistv
Well I learned something new...

For my day job I handle new media for a law school and one of my tasks has been
to create 2
minute excerpts from the law school's vast library of television shows (that
cover topics from
health to politics to law to history) and post them on the web. I had been
posting solely to
youtube and clip syndicate and we do pretty well there, but last week I
uploaded our whole
library to blip... and what did I discover? Our posts are being picked up by
google alerts!

As the point of our new media program is to establish the law school as a
leader in multi-
media education for the public on an international level this is very, very
welcome news (and
made me look pretty smart too!). In retrospect I can't help wondering why
google alerts
would not mine their own company, youtube, for content, but in any case, thanks
again to
blip for being such a fantastic platform for content creators.

   1. my videos are hosted on blip.tv
   2. I use a self hosted wordpress as a part of showinabox installation.
   3. I will have in the near future an audio podcast as well
   4. Each video episode is linked to textual blog posts hosted on the
   same wordpress blog.
   5. I will have a combined RSS feed via feedburner
What is the best way to gather stats of the afferent info sources?

others may have better solutions, but you really have to add up the
video views yourself from the different sources.
If you are only hosting your videos on blip, then that should be your
total views no matter if people come from other links or through RSS.

some people are using that new service (forgot the name) that upoads
 to multiple places at once.
anyone know if that service now tallies up all your views from around the web?

[videoblogging] Re: Major Shakeup in Hollywood

2007-11-05 Thread synchronistv
I am fascinated by this strike... as an actor I am entirely pro-union and whole
heartedly
believe that writers and actors deserve their rightful piece of the pie I
am also equally
enamored by the online video world where most of these production contract
lines don't
exist (note recent southpark online video contract where the creators receive
an
unprecedented share of add rev.- I think 50%, correct me if I'm wrong) On
line video has
the chance to write its own rules...and for most of us online content creators
that has
meant a far more equal and permanent piece of the pie for all of the production
team.
Why? because for so many of us online video is about celebrating the true
democratization of the entertainment community...

however... I also think those of us who are currently smaller content creators
are in a
precarious position more and more we are competing with the big guys... how
do we
hold are own? What entices a viewer to turn on synchronis.tv or moya
entertainment or
batmangeek.com instead of Heroes online? I have a ton of ideas about this
which I will get
to in the coming weeks...

but in the meanwhile an idea was born at podcamp boston last week that could
help our
community to both empower one another as well as the community at large...for
online
videos creators, at least at present, the commerce lies in our numbers... how
do you
increase your numbers? Getting featured in itunes sure helps... How do you get
featured
in itunes? Well... there are a lot of ways, most of which involve editorial
choices on the
part of the itunes podcast department.. but one thing that helps is a good
number of
positive reviews.. so...

I created a wiki.. http://reviewitforward.pbwiki.com head over there and list
your
vodcast... but... by listing your vodcast you are committing to reviewing ten
other
podcasts on the wiki...now first DO NO HARM! if you don't like the show move
on to
another podcast

but we can have a strong united voice... we can support one another and
ourselves while
also paving the way for a strong culture of democratization in online video.
Maybe its a
simple as a wiki...

There is one major difference here in all this.

I do NOT 'need' Hollywood to distribute my video, audio or any other
content. Sure, it helps and they have it down pat, but in the end... if I
don't want to associate with the studios or the unions, then I do NOT have
to. That is why there has been sooo much uproar from the major studios over
everything about iTunes, the internet and Napster. In the days before the
Internet, if you wanted to get heard as the artist, you had very little
recourse than to go through their channels, IF you wanted or desired to be a
big celeb and make big bucks.

Of course, my opinion matters very little on this topic as I am neither.
(side note, I believe a good writer/author is well worth their weight in
 salt)

The point of this post is that, the writers are striking over something that
does makes sense from their business relationship with the studios, but to
the rest of the content producers out on the Internet, well, their little
squabble with the studios seems trite as I believe most web content
producers don't use Union writers and to some degree could care less what
happens with the strike. Hell, most content consumers of web content could
probably care less as well, because they just might consume *more* web
 content.

It is interesting times to be where we on this list are, web content
producers as well as other software producers on the internet.

Sorry if this rant seems off, but that is how I see it. Oh and I just
joined the list not long ago and this is my first post from the shadows of a
 lurker.

I am into Podcasting and expect to expand into Video as time progresses and
I get some good vidoe editing software and skills going.

 Thanks,

I'm totally confused... why was this totally self-absorbed? The writer didn't
say their show

how can we build a cohesive, strong and viable community if we flame one

[videoblogging] any experience with podpress

2007-10-18 Thread synchronistv
I know I know... i should probably be using show-in-a box, but going into this
process I got
a ton of advice from a ton of people and over and over I was advised to use
podpress to
embed my videos on my blog and create my rss feed. Would I do it again..no...
but for now...
there it is. I am not a coder, so while I have become pretty facile with html,
I would need to
hire someone to alter my blog, so it is podpress for now.

(i am also not a huge feedburner fan, and don't want to risk having to forward
my itunes feed
now, we all know what that is like)

We are featured on itunes this week, which is incredibly wonderful, however my
podpress
stats don't even list my latest post. I have no idea how many hits itunes is
generating, and as
I have a huge crew I would like to someday pay, my stats are vital. (I know
the file and post
are fine, I have both downloaded it from itunes and viewed it directly on the
site)

anyone with any insight? Much appreciated!!!

[videoblogging] Above and beyond...35's incredible production team

2007-10-07 Thread synchronistv
Hi All!

I am a very new member to this fantastic group... my name is Kathryn Jones...
 I know
some of you already... but for those of you I don't know , I just finished
production on
35, the first ever web drama to stream live on the internet... using three
panasonic dvx
100's, mixed in real time via a TriCaster studio we shot 10 episodes over a 12
night
period, and streamed live from September 17th -30th of this year at 9 pm est.

It was the most challenging thing I have ever done, emotionally, creatively,
physically
intellectually... and it was incredibly rewarding.

One of the best parts of my experience was the opportunity to work with some
truly
remarkable people, people I highly highly recommend and think this group should
know
about.

First of all, you all know Jan McLaughlin.. WOW... Jan was our production sound
mixer and
is a consummate professional. Our shoot was especially challenging for any
sound mixer
as we were treading entirely unknown territory and found out the hard way that
the
technology we were using was especially unfriendly to high quality sound
production. Jan
worked tirelessly to discover and fix the sound inconsistencies that live
streaming created
(often a new technical issue each night) , and then to provide me with great
tracks for our
archives. I can not recommend this wonderful woman enough... she would be an
asset
paved in gold on any video shoot and is a pure joy to have on a set. http://
fauxpress.blogspot.com/

Secondly, Andrew Lipson... Andrew was our technical director extraordinaire and
tri-caster
pro. To say we would not have had a shoot without Andrew is the understatement
of the
century. His unending knowledge, his years of experience, his boundless
positive energy,
his calm and his problem solving abilities each came into play night after
night after night.
I am so grateful to have had Andrew on our shoot and can not recommend him
enough.

Thirdly, Marcus Lehmann, our dp...not only is he a great dp, Marcus is a joy to
have on a
set. Obviously our budget was miniscule which meant Marcus often took on the
roles of
grip, gaffer and dp alike. and then on load out, who was hand scrubbing the
stairs?
Marcus! What a pure pleasure to work with. I am totally indebted to him.
http://
www.marcuslehmann.com/

Fourthly, another group member, Brian Gonzalez as you all know Brian is a
Director/
cinematographer, but he came on our set because we needed an AD... hardly a
rewarding
position for a director/cinematographer, even so, Brian ran that set like
clockwork. His
input was invaluable and presence on our set irreplaceable.
http://www.taxiplasm.net/

Fifthly (is that a word?) Rich McGrath, a PA whom I found on Craig's list, Rich
became
Andrew's right hand man in the tech booth. A coder and video expert by trade
Rich soon
became a critical member of our staff. He is incredibly knowledgeable, hard
working,
dedicated, and once again a joy to have on our staff.

Should any of you be looking for any staff and think Jan, Andrew, Marcus, Brian
or Rich
might be just the person you are looking for I hope you won't hesitate to
contact me... and
I will be happy to extoll in further detail... and put you in touch!

And lastly...thanks so much to all of you for your incredible support through
this process
(I heard via Jan and Brian that you guys were wonderful).. I am so honored to
be a part of
this group!

all my best!
