There's a woman local to silicon valley who edits her vacation videos
around a theme. They're always entertaining and no one realizes they're
vacation videos. She edited vacation video of her grandkids into a
video called "centrifugal motion" it won some local awards and is
better than the theme park's actual television commercials. So I guess
it's all in the interpretation of your footage.

2005-10-26 Thread Stellan Johansson
Thanks for the input! I really appreciate it. I think that one of the
reasons I'm having trouble to make videos right now is that I've been
stuck on photography for a while now. I mean I really like both
videography and photography. It's just that I have been concentrating
on capturing things and moments one frame at the time lately. Perhaps
that's why it is difficult for me to "see video in my mind".
As of right now I will try to have a pen and a notepad available at
all times. Just in case!

Thanks!

BTW I don't have a pet frog. It was just an example (see first post in
this thread)! :-)

[videoblogging] Re: Creative crisis (I'm stuck)

2005-10-26 Thread jonny goldstein
Here's one way to go if you are stuck on what to do a vlog post, or series of
posts, about:

People always enjoy a little drama. Drama happens when there is some sort of
challenge
that needs to be overcome. That creates suspense (how will this turn out) and
empathy
(everyone can relate to someone who is facing a challenge). This can be done
with the
most mundane topics. So, for example, I'm doing videos now on implementing a
new filing
system. The thing is, people can relate to the challenge of dealing with masses
of paper
piling up all over the place. It's also cool, 'cause people can learn something
from your
efforts. And there are lots of opportunities for humor (one look at my
desk=instant
hilarity).

Anyway, there's got to be other good approaches, but this one works for me.

[videoblogging] Re: Creative crisis (I'm stuck)

2005-10-25 Thread Lossy Graham
Hey Stellan,

That's a tough one! I think that there are some people who show their everyday
life on
their vlogs and do it in a way that's good, that is thinking about an audience
(and there's
definately some people who don't!). I think that makes the difference between
something
that's kind of dull and narcissistic and something that's interesting and
engaging. I think
there's no reason why you couldn't show your workplace or your frog, so long as
you do it
in a way that's meant for an audience, that's thoughtful of how an audience
would recieve
it. Some people try to do that by including humour in their posts, others use
more "artsy"
techniques (like abstraction or narrative/poetry), others use a kind of
"activism" that's
about taking production of media back to the "masses" (i.e the people who
actually watch
the stuff).

As for ideas to get started, with many artistic processes I often set a time
limit and a
quantity (i.e. I'm going to do 7 videos each week) and then chuck out the stuff
that doesn't
work (which is usually most of it). That way everybody thinks you make one
amazing video
every week and nobody ever knows about all the awful stuff!!! HAHAHA!

Good luck!
