I'm wondering about archiving when using any kind of card. As long as
you don't re-use them, DV tape is always available. Would you transfer
everything onto a hard drive? And then back that drive up? With hi
def we're talking about a lot of bytes, particularly with cinema
verite documentary shooting. (Which I do.)

I deliver my videos in Flash at 512kbs in order to have a streaming
effect for the widest possible audience. I would continue to do this
even if I shot in hi def, but would lay off the hi def materials so
that I could eventually come up programming that
would take advantage of the new format.

Lots of issues with HD...

You'd be transferring the video to a PC for editing, so I'd guess you'd just
archive to an external hard drive.

Rupert - I edit HD (hdv transcoded or rendering to prores, dvcprohd,)
at 1080p every day in fcp on a macbook pro. You definitely want one or
more good FW800 or esata drives, though I'd think a 5400rpm internal
should handle it (though without much in the way of real time
effects). I've even done color correction for other people's HD
projects on this system (using an MXO for output), though they're
doing the final renders on their own systems.

That's also not editing native h.264, which I doubt I'd do even if FCP
handled it without a hiccup and with 10 streams using 6 layers each of
effects in real time.but that's just me and my snooty image control
issues.

It would be nice to see the footage from the VPC-HD1010. Hey John, can
you please upload some sample 1920X1080 30P hiest quality setting
footage to eatlime.com and post us all the download link here? I, for
instance, then can then test the footage in my Premiere Pro CS3 setup
and let you know if I could edit it.

Thanks

Renat

I could be mistaken but I think that Sony Vegas would be able to
handle this without pre rendering the video

I would love to be able to test that out...

2008-07-10 Thread Bill Cammack
I'm editing HD on a Macbook pro, I believe 2.3 gHz, 2 gig RAM.

I have no problems editing single layers of 1440x1080/60i HDV coming
from the Canon HV20. Also, no problems editing in 1280x720/24p Apple
ProRes codec.

Bogs if you start multiclipping 1080i footage, but you can lower frame
quality and frame rate requirements and do ok with it.

It's also good to have a MacBook Pro so you have the right video card
to run Motion, which does a much better job at keying than FCP does.

I've been meaning to ask - who's editing HD, and how powerful does
your computer have to be to be efficient?
Can a MacBook Pro handle HD editing effectively?
I'm wondering what the minimum spec is, and what people are actually
using for fast render times, etc.
