The other thing to consider is if you host your videos only on your own server and for some reason you can't pay anymore, you videos will disappear. If they're on the Archive the idea is that they will stay around indefinitely. So really the best bet even if you have your own server is to also put them up on the Archive for safe keeping. -Verdi SPONSORED LINKS Fireant Individual Use YAHOO! [videoblogging] Re: To use Archive.org or not?
You can host on Archive.org but it's probably best to use OurMedia which is a service that was set up by Archive.org especially for personal media producers. The one issue you might have is slow or spotty service. Things tend to take longer to download from Archive.org than from a paid host. If you're using Dreamhost you should be fine with them. They provide lots of bandwidth and seem to be pretty fast. They're my host of choice. Of course if you want to also upload to Archive.org you can do that too, just to save your work for posterity. [videoblogging] Re: To use Archive.org or not?
No problem. Here is the deal IMHO: Certainly you can directly upload via Archive.org but for newbies and time challenge folk it can be a pain. If you have experience it can really be a pain. However, after you establish an Archive account an option could be to use the CC Publisher http://creativecommons.org/tools/ccpublisher This will help automate the process of uploading your file directly into the Archive. But depending on what is happening at the Archive it might take awhile to see the upload. Most folks who don't have a commercial host make use of OurMedia, Blip.tv or other free hosting services. Both had advantages and disadvantaged. The advantages of storing it on you own server - total control and access, no delay in uploading. The bad side - if the server is toast or crashers so goes your stuff. This is true with any of the above services but just hurts more when it is all on you. Also, if you host charges for increased bandwidth usage you might face the joys of success with the agony of a huge bill. Similar with using the other services. The advantage is that no matter how many folks view the video you don't incur usage charges. But it is harder to have videos removed, and you are depended on a third party to display your videos. Things happen and you might not have access when you really need to upload. My two cents, Gena http://outonthestoop.blogspot.com http://voxmedia.org/wiki/Video Yahoo!
