The Apple logo on the back is a reflective mirror. It's on the back
centered below the camera (which is on the upper left.)

The internet will use will happen over wi-fi and then when wi-fi is unavail it
will switch to EDGE and then GSM if no EDGE.

So yes, just like this piece of crap blackberry (yesterdays gem) which I have
set up on cingular edge and gsm, the iphone will have interent whereever
cingular has coverage in us and maybe canada (there is EDGE in canada now with
cingular partner Rodgers).

Yep. 8GB doesn't leave a lot of room for downloaded video either,
 I think we may find ourselves adding streaming h.264 at lower speeds.

 What wasn't clear to me was if the internet bit only works given
 a wifi connect, or over the phone also.

 And if so one wonders.how much is Cingular going
 to charge for that and at what speed?

a) Video recording was not mentioned.

b) The camera has a spec of only 2 megapixels.

c) The extra space required to add video would likely be one of the

Does the phone allow for cell phone video recording?
how minutes in recording capacity?

Thanks for providing those details if possible.

These are very similar to the criticisms raised when the
iPod was first introduced. They are valid, however, look
what happened in the past five years with the iPod platform.

Consider iPhone is generation 1 of a new platform for
Apple and all the things they did right in the design
of iPhone generation one:

* Plenty of local storage
* GSM standard support
* Sync with iTunes for music and video
* A real operating system (lean and mean OS X)
* WiFi communication
* BlueTooth communication
* Edge support
* Touch screen interface
* Steve Jobs Obsessive Compulsive Design Filter
* Real standards based browser interface
* Excellent web page rendering
* Svelte form factor with sexy curves

Think of it as the beginning of a new platform and it
starts to make more sense. I've never found any of
the converged devices very interesting, I've heard
the promises for years and years (being an old timer)
not even the Nokia devices, but this one made me stop
in my tracks and think.

My prediction for MacWorld was Apple would introduce
start shipping the iTV and announce a 16:9 iPod and
the long awaited iPhone... I was pleased to see both
the phone and iPod so elegantly integrated, so Apple.

Reminds me of the first time I saw the Macintosh 128K.
It was not the first compact computer, but it was the
first elegant compact computer.

Cheers,

David.

I'm still not convinced that an "all in one" device is completly
practical, my phone I got for free with service, in 2 years I can get
a new one for free, my zen cost 200 bucks 30 gig plays video music,
etc...it breaks i'm out 200 bucks and I still have a
phone...something goes wrong with my Iphone? I'm out 500 bucks and
have no phone, no music, no vids.Oh, wait just use my old phone
and ipod? This is a secondary device, not a primary and for 500
bucks that is steep, even with the "cool" factorhow long is the
screen going to last? you are constantly touching it...how long does
the battery last,  2 years?.

it is cool, yes but is it practical for everyday use...I just don't
know.

agreed.

fair prices.
and by June, could possibly be lowered a bit more when its launched.
by fall/winter, maybe knock off another $50.

some of the best phones can cost between $500-$800.
so apple has done a nice job with the price considering it is also a video
iPod.

How many kids have a phone and an ipod? Now you only need one.

Add the camera, video player and there ya go, a much better deal.

Plus, there is the high-design which is worth it, having seen how the

Also, the computer supports memory cards.

Jobs made it clear that in order to provide the best service they
needed to upgrade the carries hardware too. So while its a shame its
not open, the partnership will enable a better, more suited network
to handle all of the features.

[videoblogging] Re: Widescreen video iphone

2007-01-09 Thread Steve Watkins
Cheers,

Hmm 320x480 is obviously a lot better than 320x240 ipods, but
pocketpc's are typically 640x480 so thats a bit dissapointing in a way.

Thinking about the OS X angle further, I'll go out on a limb and bet
that, at least initially, Apple keep the device pretty locked down in
terms of what can be run on it. Also what CPU the iPhone has is
conspicuously missing from the spec, and will have a major bearing on
compatibility. I will watch Apple developer stuff to see if its ever
mentioned.

And quite apart from technical reasons for limiting compatibility and
locking down, I suspect they will like to avoid people having 'hacked'
phones that can be used without itunes, with different formats etc. To
be fair they arent calling it a pocket mac so lets not set the bar too
high for them.

Meanwhile on the Apple TV front, I see thats out in February (same in
the UK, phew), and the supported format details are:

 Video

* • Video formats supported: H.264 and protected H.264 (from
iTunes Store): 640 by 480, 30 fps, LC version of Baseline Profile; 320
by 240, 30 fps, Baseline profile up to Level 1.3; 1280 by 720, 24 fps,
Progressive Main Profile. MPEG-4: 640 by 480, 30 fps, Simple Profile

Audio

* • Audio formats supported: AAC (16 to 320 Kbps); protected AAC
(from iTunes store); MP3 (16 to 320 Kbps); MP3 VBR; Apple Lossless;
AIFF; WAV

Photos

* • Photo formats supported: JPEG, BMP, GIF, TIFF, PNG

No huge surprises there I guess, its an extension of what theyve done
before with ipod & itnues video.

Cheers

Keep up to date on the latest MacWorld developments here:
http://www.macrumorslive.com/

Also, Dennis Crowley made a good observation on flickr about the iphone when he
wrote:

"I'm really disappointed Apple went w/ Cingular (or any carrier for that
matter).I was really hoping Apple was going to say "Fuck the carriers. We'll
sell you the phone. You find a SIM card".This would have a been a great
opportunity to get the US away from the Carrier Stranglehold model and moving
towards the "Phone manufactures sell phones. Carriers sell service" model that
exists in Europe"
It's an interesting thought; maybe the next generations of phones to top the
iphone will be the one that is independent of a carrier.

[videoblogging] Re: Widescreen video iphone

2007-01-09 Thread Steve Watkins
Although he didnt make it clear whether its a subset of OSX, what the
compatibility is like, whether users will have the ability to load
what they want on it. Skype for example.

It must be a cut-down version in some way or it would take an annoying
amount of time to startup & drain the battery too quickly? Dunno, just
speculating.

Looks like a nice device, shame have to wait so long for it,
especially as it wont be out in Europe till the 4th quarter.

Was there any mention of the built-in camera recording video?

Any mention of what video formats/resolutions it will support?

Do we know what the actual screen resolution is?

Lacking 3G seems like a slightly strange omission although personally
I'll use it mostly with wifi.

Im glad to see Apple shake this stuff up because my experinces with
smartphones and pocketpc phones havent been overly enjoyable. Am
looking forward to see what the multi-touch is like, and how apples
implementation of touchscreen compares to microsofts dismal tablet
efforts. There was a bit of Apples usually over-egging of the
uniqueness, I can use a finger with my pocketpc quite nicely, but the
full-browser and multitouch should make an interesting difference to
the experience.

The Apple TV currently has me interested too, any idea of release date
for that? It would probably be more of a killer device if it supported
a widder range of video formats but its too early to tell.

Cheers

I wonder what the video resolution goes up to. Will it go to 640x480
or a widescreen resolution around there or higher?
