Re: [videoblogging] OT: how to move between servers
It depends: what do you have on your old website? A wordpress install with a database? Just a flat website with files? You will need to log in on the command line to your server. thanks, Peter. I have a movable type install, a blog with archives, some hosted videos. I've logged in to the command line of my server, yes, with Terminal and have some basic unix knowledge but how to move it over to another account baffles me.On 3/5/06, Peter Van Dijck [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: It depends: what do you have on your old website? Re: [videoblogging] OT: how to move between servers
ok, then you need to find info on the MT website. The basic steps will be these: 1. backup your files to your local computer 2. backup your database (you know how to do this?) 3. Now you can either start a new MT install on your new host, and import all your entries (using MT's import/export mechanism), OR attempt to transfer your entire install by ftp-ing all the files, re-creating your database, chmodding all the right directories. I am not sure which approach is better. You need to find the right details on the MT website, since this can be pretty complex. Good luck! ps: if you're not familiar with all these steps, set apart a weekend for it. An experienced person might do it in a few hours or less. yikes. You know, this is definitely one of those moments I might just want to hire someoneI don't think I'd try and put in a new breaker box in my house by myself. Re: [videoblogging] OT: how to move between servers
assuming you have the proper permissions assuming both systems are compatible and assuming that you only want to copy files, not just import/export vlog you might try "uucp" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UUCP Brett Gaylor wrote: Sorry to ask here, but google is not helping me, and neither is dreamhost. Re: [videoblogging] OT: how to move between servers
another option is it possible to ftp the files from old server to new? maybe Dreamhost support can do that for you? otherwise you'll have to download to local and then upload again (ugh!) if using ftp is an option, you can at least make this two simple (but possibly slow) folder copies hopefully you do not have bandwidth limits (from your ISP, not from your hosting) that make this difficult Brett Gaylor wrote: Sorry to ask here, but google is not helping me, and neither is dreamhost. Re: [videoblogging] OT: how to move between servers
Yes. The thing to remember is: when moving an MT install or any dynamic website, it's NOT just about FTP-ing the files (which is easy), but about replicating the database, usernames, permissions and all that geeky stuff (which can be hard). You should look into MT's import/export options though. That might be the simplest way. PeterOn 3/5/06, Brett Gaylor [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: yikes.
