VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues
relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control,
preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and
related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective
working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication
between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and
distributors.

Re: [Videolib] Looking for documentaries about food

2014-02-25 Thread Jessica Hammond
Hi Lisa!

A few titles to add to the list...

Against the Grain
Against the Grain slashes through biotechnology's propaganda, revealing the
science and politics behind "transgenic" foods to show how biotech companies
increasingly engineer what you eat to be compatible with their chemicals, but
not necessarily good for human health.

Cafeteria Man
The USDA estimates 32 million school kids consume up to 50% of their calories
at school, contributing to the obesity epidemic among young people. What does
it take to reform school lunch programs, especially in larger school districts,
and provide healthful, tasty meals to our nation’s kids?

Delicious Peace
In a nation once plagued by Idi Amin’s reign of terror and intolerance,
Christian, Jewish, and Muslim Ugandan coffee farmers have come together to
challenge historical prejudice and economic hurdles by forming the “Delicious
Peace Coffee Cooperative.”

Fresh
Our current industrial method of food production is increasingly viewed as an
unsustainable system, destructive to the environment and public health. But
what is the alternative?

The Future of Food
There is a revolution happening in the farm fields and on the dinner tables of
America – a revolution that is transforming the very nature of the food we eat,
yet is little-known to most of us.

GROW!
With the average age of farmers in the U.S. currently at 57, it’s critical to
encourage more young people to take up the plow. GROW! profiles a new crop of
idealistic young farmers who have turned to the fields for a more fulfilling
life, driven also by a strong desire to change how our food is grown.

In Organic We Trust
Most Americans now purchase organic food in some form, but don’t know what
“organic” really means. In Organic We Trust follows filmmaker Kip Pastor on a
journey to answer the essential questions about organic: What exactly is
certified organic? Is it really better for us, or just marketing hype? Is
organic the key to transforming our food system?

The Man Who Stopped the Desert
The Man Who Stopped the Desert tells Yacouba’s story, partly though dramatic
reconstruction. As a young man, he fought the accepted wisdom of the
traditional land chiefs who opposed his farming techniques. But Yacouba
remained undaunted.

Nourish and Nourish Bundle
With beautiful visuals and inspiring stories, Nourish: Food + Community (26
min) reveals the many ways food connects to our environment, our communities
and our health. The film traces our relationship to food from a global
perspective to personal action steps. A companion to the film, Nourish Short
Films is a virtual encyclopedia of food issues, featuring 54 short, bite-sized
videos with thought-provoking commentary and visuals. Subjects include: Food
and Biodiversity, Food and Health, Supermarket Secrets, Why Eat Local, Fair
Trade, Hunger and Obesity, Edible Education, and dozens of other topics.

One More Dead Fish
One More Dead Fish powerfully documents how destructive industrial fishing
practices decimated the Grand Banks, once one of the most productive sources of
seafood in the world. The film also tells the dramatic story of how local, more
environmentally-friendly hook-and-line fishermen are battling factory fishing
practices in order to survive in a globalized fishing industry.

[Videolib] Looking for documentaries about food

2014-02-25 Thread Borden, Lisa M.
All:

I'm trying to put together a comprehensive list of documentaries that are about
food or food-related topics for a course.

I will welcome any title suggestions from librarians or title lists from film
vendors, on or off list.

Thanks,

VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues
relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control,
preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and
related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective
working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication
between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and
distributors.

Re: [Videolib] online Gaming purchases???

Hi Jo Ann,

I have nothing to add, but will be interested to hear how you fare. We
had requests for some online-only games, but were not able to purchase
them since our Acquisitions head determined that the license from the PS
Store prohibits institutional use. I'm very interested in hearing how
other institutions have handled this.

Best,

Hi All,

I know some of you have experience with gaming. We've purchased a few

with them I wonder if anyone can share words of wisdom in this area.
The game in question is The Novelist from store.steampowered.com

Many thanks!
