Just a quick note to see if anyone might have any information about the
availability of When Billy Broke His Head on DVD -- our heavily used VHS is
showing signs of wear (can't even make a preservation copy thanks to the
Macrovision) and Fanlight no longer distributes it. If anyone knows of an

Dear All,

I am new to this listserv and have an immediate, specific question. I am
trying to find a source that has films from Latin America or Spain which our
academic library can buy which will include the Public Performance Rights. I
have looked at the Kino International catalog but it seems they have a very
limited number of titles from this region. Can anyone recommend another
source that would have more titles from this region that would include the
PPR?

Many thanks for your assistance in advance. Feel free to contact me

[Videolib] Icarus Films Announces acquisition of Program Development Associates

2011-09-21 Thread Anthony Sweeney
For Immediate Release: September 21, 2011

Contact: Anthony Sweeney, 1-718-488-8900

 mailto:anth...@icarusfilms.com anth...@icarusfilms.com

ICARUS FILMS

Announces acquisition of

PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATES

Jonathan Miller, President of the film distribution company Icarus Films —
http://www.icarusfilms.com/ www.IcarusFilms.com —announced today that
Icarus Films has acquired Program Development Associates —
http://www.DisabilityTraining.com www.DisabilityTraining.com — a leading
distributor of DVDs, multimedia training and educational resources on
disability related topics.

Following Icarus Films’ acquisition two years ago of the FANLIGHT
PRODUCTIONS COLLECTION — http://www.fanlight.com/ www.Fanlight.com — of
400 health care-related films and DVDs, the addition of the Program
Development Associates collection of over 600 DVD titles and other
resources, will enable the customers of both companies to access the best
and most suitable films and DVDs to meet their different (and often
specific) needs, while also helping the titles distributed by both companies
to reach wider audiences.

Miller said, “Even as we continue and expand our commitment to the
distribution of classic, auteur and major creative documentaries to
theatrical and home entertainment markets with the release of Patricio
Guzmán’s NOSTALGIA FOR THE LIGHT this year, Icarus Films remains dedicated
to the nontheatrical markets. I believe that the ability we have to cross
promote the films we represent to different, but complementary audiences and
communities, and up and down the different media markets, gives us the
flexibility and reach to ensure that every film we release reaches as wide
and engaged an audience as possible.”

About the companies:

Founded in 1978, Icarus Films is a leading distributor of documentary and
art films in North America, with a library of 800 titles and releasing
approximately 50 new films each year. The collection, mostly independent
productions, features innovative and provocative films about our changing
world. Recent releases include NOSTALGIA FOR THE LIGHT (Patricio Guzmán) and
2010 Academy Award-nominated RABBIT À LA BERLIN (Bartek Konopka Piotr
Roslowski). Current new releases include the 2011 Sundance selection THE
NINE MUSES (John Akomfrah) opening at The Museum of Modern Art in New York
City on October 6, 2011 and EL SICARIO, ROOM 164 (Gianfranco Rossi and
Charles Bowden) opening at Film Forum in New York City on December 28, 2011.

In 2009, Icarus Films acquired the Fanlight Productions Collection of 350
titles — educational media with a special focus on health care, mental
health, aging, disabilities, and related issues.

Program Development Associates, founded in 1985, supplies disability
professionals in social service agencies, k-12 special education teachers in
public and private schools, Human Resource trainers in business, and
instructors in college classrooms with well researched program content that
has been developed and tested by disability experts. The collection includes
700 videos, DVDs, CDs, printed workbooks and reference guides, gaming
software and interactive board games on topics ranging from disability
awareness, inclusion, professional development, advocacy and assistive
technology, to physical, developmental, learning disabilities and vocational
rehab.

Program Development Associates, combined with Fanlight Productions
award-winning documentaries on disabilities, allows Icarus Films to now
offer the most comprehensive collection of multimedia resources in the field
of disability awareness.

In the spirit of playing out an experiment to see how it goes, you can
count me in. But I don't think this will be especially revealing
since, even at half off, this title is still very expensive and out of
 range for many libraries.

In general this seems like a fun idea, but I'm not sure how well it
will work in the long-term. It feels kind of gimicky and not really
sustainable as a new purchasing model. What if next month I want
Hotel Terminus, will I need to propose to Icarus a Groupon deal, and
then wait to see if enough people respond? In the meantime, I have a
professor who needs it in two weeks.

Re: [Videolib] Doing Business in China?

2010-08-27 Thread Anthony Sweeney
Hi Deborah,

Icarus Films has two really nice films that might help:

THE MEN WHO WOULD CONQUER CHINA
http://icarusfilms.com/new2005/men.html

For 4,000 years China largely succeeded, both culturally and economically,
in keeping the rest of the world at bay. Following its introduction of
reforms in the 1980's, however, including a transition from a socialist to a
market economy, China allowed multinational corporations to set up shop. Now
that the world's most populous nation is clearly on a fast track to
capitalism, American investors are eagerly exploring ways to exploit China's
new 'economic miracle.'

THE MEN WHO WOULD CONQUER CHINA follows the efforts of wealthy New York
investment banker Mart Bakal and his well-connected Hong Kong business
partner Vincent Lee as they join forces in an effort to create the perfect
mix of economic and political opportunity in China...

and...

A DECENT FACTORY
http://icarusfilms.com/new2005/dec.html

The one and only social responsibility of business is to make profits.
Milton Friedman, Nobel Prize Winner in Economics

In an increasingly globalized economy, more corporations are 'outsourcing'
their production to countries with cheaper labor costs and less legal
protection of workers' rights. Some corporate managers, whether out of
sincere moral concern or because they must respond to the considerations of
investors and shareholders, are attempting to balance profit-making with
social morality.

A DECENT FACTORY focuses on such an effort by Nokia, the Finnish electronics
firm, which sends a team led by two business ethics advisors to examine
conditions at a Chinese factory that supplies parts to Nokia...

Call - (800) 876-1710 - or send me an email - anth...@icarusfilms.com - if
you have questions about either title.

Happy weekend everyone! Looks like it's going to be beautiful up here in the
Northeast.

Good morning, Anthony. :-)

If I may ask. be sure to include our customer # on *what* form? I'd love to
take advantage of the PAY WHAT YOU WISH sale to purchase WE ALL FALL DOWN,
but I'm not sure what form it is you mean. unless you just mean when we
complete an order at the Icarus website?

Hope you are well!
Cheers,
Susan
