All these movies bring back memories of my babysitting days. Growing up in
Chicago, it was Svengoolie for me. Sometimes I remember his parodies more
than the movies. He did make me a fan of the cheesy 50's horror movies.
Giant Gila Monster anybody. Ray Kellogg seemed to be trying to throw in
everything but the kitchen sink.

Anybody: What is the name of the movie with the giant grasshoppers drowning
in Lake Michigan? I did not want to go anywhere near the beach after than one.

I reiterate what Randal and Helen wrote - that mirrors my experience exactly.
As an experiment, I recently sent a request to a vendor who specializes in

Lehigh University has the same eclectic needs.  I
was once approached by a book vendor that was
expending their coverage to include videos.  They
snagged an academic acquisitions person who had a
lot of media expertise and began a high-pressure
marketing effort for this service.  Just to be
nice, I tried them for something I was having
trouble finding.  When they couldn't find it
either, they canceled the order.  At that point, I
devoted some time to the problem and found it
   myself.

Why would I use a vendor when I can do better than
they can?  It might save time out of my day, but it
would not get the videos in our door any faster.
Since vendors could not possibly stock all videos
from every production company, it would undoubtedly
take longer than it would take me: the presence of a
middleman would require additional time for the
   order to be filled.

[Videolib] Educational PPR

2011-02-03 Thread Karen Ketchaver
List members,

I noted this today on a vendor website:

Educational Public Performance Rights (PPR) allow for screening IN A CLASSROOM
SETTING ONLY for matriculated students in any not-for-profit institution -
universities, museums, galleries, libraries, microcinemas, community centers,
or educational institutions, in an educational context.

This assertion seems to contradict what U.S. Copyright Title 17 states
regarding library and classroom use (performance or display of work by
instructors or pupils in the course of face-to-face teaching activities of a
nonprofit educational institution, in a classroom or similar place devoted to
instruction).

I know that this topic has been well discussed on the list, but educational
public performance rights was a new wrinkle for me.

Interesting. They're granting you rights that we already have for classroom

But by adding in other venues, it's practically giving you full public

[Videolib] Mein Krieg DVD

2010-11-17 Thread Karen Ketchaver
Colleagues,

I'm searching for a DVD of Mein Krieg (written and directed by Harriet Eder
and Thomas Kufus). It was released by Kino on Video in 2000 but apparently is
out of print. Four third-party sellers are offering it on Amazon, but the price
is prohibitive (almost $300 for a new copy, and three used starting at $123 -
yikes). Does anyone have a suggestion? I did get a hit for an online source
called germanwarfilms.com but that site appears to be far from legit.

We have a VHS copy in our collection, but it's wearing out. A faculty member
uses it extensively and is very keen for the library to replace it,
particularly with a DVD.

I will be away on holidays from July 30th to August 16th.

VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues
relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control,
preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and
related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective
working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication
between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and
distributors.
