What are people's favorite/most recommended places to find TV shows and films that are currently in production? Seems like IMDB hides that info behind the Pro account. Re: [Videolib] Academic Libraries Add Netflix Subscriptions
I think this is kind of what I'm getting at. When libraries buy something, they have the right to turn around and lend it. But since libraries are not buying DVDs from Netflix, they don't inherit the right to then lend them. It's because it's a difference can o' worms that, I'm thinking, makes it illegal. As with the situation with software: "Software companies also routinely attempt to avoid the first sale doctrine by characterizing their transaction with the purchaser as a license rather than a sale" (http://www.aallnet.org/committee/copyright/pages/issues/firstsale.html) Tom _ Tom Ipri, MS Head, Media and Computer Services Lied Library University of Nevada, Las Vegas 4505 S. In other words, it has to do with the rights of legal buyers. The NetFlix transaction is a rental--a temporary "lease"?--and is, I would imagine, a different can o' worms. Re: [Videolib] Do your institutions have video studios in their library/libraries?
Wasn't someone (Shelly McCoy?) putting together a list of who offered these services? We also have a Media Lab: http://library.unlv.edu/media/medialab.html We have 3 high-end PCs which include video capture hardware. We have 1 staff dedicated to running the lab. Projects run the gamut. Some people just want to convert personal VHS to DVD. A lot of editing of video shot for class projects. Most projects are pretty straight-forward. I have been charged with leading on consulting the design of this tab. Within the media tab, I am planning to have 3 sub tabs for video, images, and audio, each a little different reflected by the ways in which the respective media is discovered by their users. I am also proposing to add some additional functionality for federated search based on what we can technically offer (somewhat limited). From a video perspective, this also provides us an opportunity to not only offer traditional catalog video search, but perhaps promote/ search intergrate some licensed streaming content (mostly in the catalog already), our Media Services, and a for now, a link to curated open video collections. For an example of what I am describing please see USC's "Images" tab using Webfeat: http://www.usc.edu/libraries/ Please share some innovative media search interfaces at yours or other institutions. So far, the only institutions I have found that have explicitly dedicated media search on the main page at the same level as books/journals are UofTexas (CD/DVD), UofWashington (Audio and Video - no Image), USC (Image only), Uof Illinois (Media), Kansas (Images search off to the left side). That's my impression as well. Re: [Videolib] Filmmakers are not your enemies
Hi Curtis, First, welcome to the crazy world of video librarians. Second, I think it's safe to say that most of us who find ourselves working in media libraries are quite passionate about film and, in an ideal world, would love to spend our money with independent filmmakers. Unfortunately, we all have limited budgets to work within and these days many of our budgets are shrinking at an alarming rate. And in many libraries, the media collection does not get the type of budget and attention it deserves to begin with. What that means is that we have difficult decisions to make. Without the option of buying the home version, my decision goes from buying the institutional version or the home version to buying the institutional version or not buying it at all. And with my budget as it is, I'm doing a lot of not buying of things I would love to have in my collection. There are sellers on this list who can attest to the fact that 2 years ago, I bought many many films from them and now I'm buying a handful of titles at best. I don't like it because their content is still as great as ever, but I just don't have the money and our collection suffers because of it. Difficult decisions indeed. This is a topic that comes up on this list, so no worries about alienating anyone. I think we're all sensitive to the issue and would love to be in a position to be more financially supportive. MY moral objective is to provide the best media collection for our patrons given the limitations of my budget. If that means I have to sacrifice one good $250 documentary to purchase ten good $25 documentaries that will support more students, then I have to go with the later. Trust me when I say, we filmmakers are not trying to get rich off our projects. We just want to make a living and to be fairly compensated for our work. Often times, we embark on our films because they are subjects that personally matter to us, in my case, it was a family friend who had been murdered, and we devote years to it without getting any monetary compensation. We are just trying to recoup our costs. Now, why the price difference? It's because you will be showing these films as often as you like (for years) and you will be making money off our work through tuition and other fees. If you amortize it, it's still a pretty good deal for your institutions. Would you prefer if we didn't offer the home version and just had the one institutional price? And to show a "home" version when it is specifically stated that is not the intended purpose, I think is morally wrong, just like downloading copyrighted video or music off the internet. But then, again, some people have no problem doing that either. So I suspect that I lot of people will be doing that. The loser in that is the artist. Sigh. In the end, we are all trying to help educate the population. We share a common goal and it's wrong to think we are your adversaries. [Videolib] 78 Recording
Does anyone know of a turntable designed especially to digitize 78 records? There's software that will allow you to "speed up" records played on a standard 33/45 usb turntables, but I'm under the impression that playing a 78 could damage the needle.
