[Videolib] Fashions of 1934 DVD/VHS
Dear collective mind, Do you know if Fashions of 1934 starring Bette Davis and William Powell is available anywhere for purchase? I prefer DVD but VHS also works if there is no DVD. Thanks. Wow, I thought I'd seen all the Bette Davis movies, but never even heard of this one! Something to look forward to Rhonda Rhonda Rosen| Head, Media Access Services William H. OK my friend at WB reports that indeed the issue was material but they have just made a lovely new master. It has a small flaw they need to fix and he had no release date but clearly it is on their front burner. This would be a release of the Warner Archive Collection which is not really sold retail and I strongly urge all libraries to check their site and buy lots from them. http://www.wbshop.com/Warner-Archive/ARCHIVE,default,sc.html?adid=wacurl On Thu, Sep 9, 2010 at 1:02 PM, Alex O. I was still able to order a new VHS copy from Scarecrow Video here in Seattle back in the early 2000s, so you could see if they're still able to get you a copy... but my guess is that it's gone out of print. I've only ever found 3 video stores that carried it for rental, so finding a used copy won't be easy. (I sold my VHS copy on eBay in 2006, along with the rest of my VHS collection.) They still have a rental copy at Scarecrow (see herehttp://www.scarecrow.com/rental/?q=Fashions+of+1934). Busby Berkeley staged the film's choreographed dance numbers, so the film is also interesting for that...though not a great film overall. It's possible that Fashions will be released as part of the Warner Archives Collection soon, since they've recently released several other lesser-known Bette Davis films of the '30s—The Golden Arrow (1936), The Girl From 10th Avenue (1935), Fog Over Frisco (1934) and Bureau of Missing Persons (1933). The Warner Archives Collection is terrific! They recently released a re-mastered DVD of Robert Altman's Brewster McCloudhttp://www.wbshop.com/Brewster-McCloud/1000161855,default,pd.html?cgid= (1970). Every library should have at least 2 copies of that one, if you ask me. :) Alex _ Alex O. Williams Institutional Sales AFD / Typecast Films Seattle, WA . Re: [Videolib] Fashions of 1934 DVD/VHS
Jessica raises a really good point about the Warner Archive. Because of the declining DVD market Warner is shifting *most* of their older film releases to the Warner Archive nowadays. Only a select number of classic titles will be released on regular DVD in the future. Most of these transfers look quite good, and some are beautifully remastered. The catch is that these are DVD-Rs created on demand. They're professionally manufactured and should work fine on most players, but from a library perspective there are still the obvious concerns about the longevity of the DVD-R format. The cool thing about the Warner Archive is that they're also releasing many titles which never would have merited a stand-alone DVD release. MGM/UA, Universal and Sony are getting into the game as well. --James -- Message: 1 Date: Thu, 9 Sep 2010 13:06:54 -0400 From: Jessica Rosner jessicapros...@gmail.com Subject: Re: [Videolib] Fashions of 1934 DVD/VHS To: videolib@lists.berkeley.edu Message-ID: aanlktimivx6y7=683kuv-0eel_h955w4zil+zo+8+...@mail.gmail.com Content-Type: text/plain; charset=windows-1252 OK my friend at WB reports that indeed the issue was material but they have just made a lovely new master.
