Re: [Videolib] Does your library have a theatre?
When planning our new library we wanted a theatre, but lost it amid all the other clamoring for space. We would have loved one for author events, film events, and a 1000 other programming events. Re: [Videolib] Does your library have a theatre?
The library at Wake Forest has a 118 seat auditorium that people use for meetings, conferences, lectures, class presentations, musical performances, the occasional DVD showing, (after having obtained PPR if not for class) etc. There is a picture here http://zsr.wfu.edu/forms/library-auditorium. It has a DVD/Blu-Ray player, a sound system, an electronic piano, a podium, and the ability to hookup and project from a laptop. Its been very popular. We have two video theatres at UConn's Homer Babbidge Library. A small one that seats 30, a large one that seats 90. Both have DVD, VCR and can handle most any format. Most of our Library classrooms are equipped to display DVD's full screen, too. Most of our physical course reserve is DVD, @700 per semester, plus we do a lot of streaming. We have a lot of group spaces in the library, both large and small. It really helps us stay relevant to the campus, draw people to the library, and interact with classes. They are almost always booked. We have two video theaters, 30 seat, 90 seat The lecture center with moveable tables and chairs, seats about 30 The Class of 47 room, screen, podium, chairs, seats about 50 Three electronic classrooms with computers at each seat and projector screens, small 15 seats, two medium 24 seats Our Dodd Center Archive building has a large auditorium with projector screen, seats at least 100 Plus our first floor is the learning commons where there are a lot of small group spaces with wide screen monitors to which small groups of students can plug their laptops in to, several istudios, and four small group video viewing stations (up to four per screen) Jo Ann Jo Ann Reynolds Reserve Services Coordinator University of Connecticut Libraries 369 Fairfield Road, Unit 1005RR Storrs, CT 06269-1005 jo_ann.reyno...@lib.uconn.edu 860-486-1406 860-486-5636 (fax) http://classguides.lib.uconn.edu/mediaresources From: videolib-boun...@lists.berkeley.edu [mailto:videolib-boun...@lists.berkeley.edu] On Behalf Of Rosen, Rhonda Sent: Friday, May 03, 2013 12:58 PM To: videolib@lists.berkeley.edu Subject: Re: [Videolib] Does your library have a theatre? Re: [Videolib] Does your library have a theatre?
Hi Lisa, Our Library has three rooms that can be used for group viewing. The first is an actual thirty two person classroom that is normally used for Library Instruction classes but we regularly host video sessions for the University's professors (mainly because we are one of only two smart rooms on campus that still have a VCR!) The second is our Media Studio that can be rearranged to accommodate up to twenty five people for group viewing when it is not being used to shoot videos. I also loan this room out to student groups who want to practice presentations with a data projector. Third is one of our larger open access rooms that has a built in smart television and Blu Ray deck. This room has been used for many board meetings as the smart TV can easily connect to laptops. The room is normally for student studying although the TV is set to show CNN during our business hours (albeit with the sound down and captions on.) All three rooms serve multiple purposes and that is the best recommendation I can give: don't tie the space down to only being a theater or only being a classroom. If you kit the room out as a smart room (projector, screen, speakers, computer, wall plates for external laptop connection, lighting dimmers or banked on off options, and an appropriate amount of chairs) it can serve as a theater and a classroom and a space for students to practice their presentations in a closed setting. You'll need to put some thought into what kind of chairs you want to put in there but there are many options that are comfortable, space saving, and still useful as classroom furniture. So, yes, we do have several theater options but not one of them as a dedicated group viewing room! Best of luck!
