following david hockney's "secret knowledge" expose on
the painterly use of prisms and mirrors, the "left"
hand in the illustration may be a reflection of a
"right" hand.

That's right Peter. And where did I see a painting of a lute player
(Mersenne?) with a plectrum tied to his index finger? Is it in the Grove
entry on the lute?
