Subject: [VIHUELA] 'viola da mano' in the VA
There are a few interesting things in this carved panel from the VA,
including what looks like a sort of 'viola da mano'. The panel dated c.1580
but the original source (whether it was a painting or engraving) can date
c.1530 - 50 or so. I wouldn't dare to paste the direct link here (it's one
of the longest ones I've ever come across!) but it should work by typing
'lute' in the search box here:
http://images.vam.ac.uk/ixbin/hixclient.exe?_IXSESSION_=submit-
button=searchsearch-form=main/index.html
Then click on the thumb nail image in the bottom right corner; that'll
take to a page with more detailed views ('viola da mano' is more or less in
the centre of the panel).

Nice score Alexander! This one is very small too. I don't recall off-hand
ever seeing a 16th cent English example before, do you? There must be, but I
just can't think of it.
yup, they're still out there ;-)
Exceptionally nice and early four string 1580 English viola da braccio too,
long neck as well. Someone(s) will surely cream over that one. This a good
example of why it's so freakin hard to distinguish viols from violins
sometimes, oftentimes even, and this time-slot in particular, and in England
in particular (now that I think of it).
Thanks
Roger
