Mexican source found in used book store? Isn't that the Codex Salvidar
no 4 ?

Not the new one found in a University in Chile?

Found in a used book store? Someone on the Lute List
(Thomas Schall) reported a performance from such a book
at the recent lute festival in Kassel. If I didn't
erase it, I'll send ithe report. It names names.g

The latest issue of Early Music (May 2007) includes
the article about the newly discovered Ms. of Santiago
de Murcia although I haven't seen it yet.

[VIHUELA] Re: Santiago de Murcia

2007-05-23 Thread Fossum, Arthur
From Thomas Schall's post to the lute list:
The first of them was by Gabriel Schabor on baroque guitar playing
music mainly from Santiago de Murcia. Gabriel played with great
technical perfection und incorporating nice effects mainly from a
mexican source found in a second hand bookstore.

I just was not sure if this concert was from the Codex or the new
Manuscript - Did not mention Chile or New

The one in Chile was BOUGHT by a the Universidad Catolica, it wasn't
found there. I haven't read the article, but I have talked to my
friends in Chile and the articles in the Chilean press. In El
Mercurio on 18 Sept 2006, Alejandro Vega claims to have found it in
Chile.

[VIHUELA] proposed name change

2005-09-06 Thread Fossum, Arthur
Let's call it [CHARANGO] :)...
I vote to keep it [VIHUELA]. There are plenty of other lists for
Guitar, where Sor and Giuliani are more on topic.
So far I feel the list is doing great and usually can't wait to get home
from work to play through all the examples...

[VIHUELA] Re: proposed name change

2005-09-06 Thread Fossum, Arthur
From the intro :
This list serves to provide a place for the discussion of all matters
pertaining to vihuelas, the Spanish plucked instrument of the sixteenth
century, and to renaissance and baroque guitars.

So even though the list has been dominated in the last few weeks by
Baroque Guitar, it is on topic... (I remember a few posts on viheula in
the beginning)

As far as lists for CG there are two yahoo lists, there is the cg-hist
list, the Eskimo list. All of these could cover 19th century performing
practice etc.
What I am afraid of is that this will turn into another rmcg, with 90%
of the posts on OT garbage or flame wars.

This is just my opinion however...
And if it switches I will still be a member.

Oddly enough, I can't recall many discussions of vihuela on this list
(unless it was charango posing as vihuela's great great bastard grand
baby:
a friendly rib). ...And again, I don't know of any place to discuss Sor
or
Giuliani on instruments like those for which the music was written.

I sincerely doubt if it is that.easy. There are situations in
Foscarini's
music that I find difficult to explain and where there is a choice to
be
made. He sometimes writes really crude dissonants. For those who have
Foscarini at hand: try the first line of the Passacalle passegiate
sopra
l'E
on p. 32. Including all courses in all the chords may be on the edge.
But
maybe it is the best solution.

Monica -After a very quick play through (it's 10 o'clock and past my
bed time) I
actually don't think so. The second chord may be misprinted - the 3
perhaps
should be on the third course, and the first course should be left out
throughout the passage except in chord E. Foscarini's music is
notoriously
badly printed.

For those that don't have the book:
The first chord is (E), dmin the second chord is :
3
-
2
3
-

Is the third chord this?(kind of unclear) :

1
-
2
3
-

This is a descending bass line over the d minor chord (E) . if you play
the open first course it gets very rich.
