A deeper question is how maps.xml extension file is distributed, since
Viking doesn't directly control this, although the data/maps.xml is

I don't follow doesn't directly control this. It seems that it's in
the release tarball, and the straightforward install installs it. So
when a new maps.xml is in a release, and people update, they'll have the
new default config. That seems obviously sensible.

Note the Window's install doesn't do anything about it.

So that's broken :-) But I don't think the windows' installer not doing
the right thing should matter much in what happens.

ATM The maps.xml file could change rapidly but it probably won't be
picked up by users until the next formal Viking release.

True, but that would be true of a list that was in the source code. If
there's an urgent change, then a release could be made.

I think anything added into data/maps.xml file should have
 explicit permission.

Agreed; that sounds like a safe and polite policy.

Thanks for the response! Apologies for being one of those people who don't
RTFM!

  + Show all / hide all c. for map layers / sub-layers.

 ?
 There
already are Show All/Hide All/Toggle options for any layers within an
Aggregate layer. (Right click on it - Visibility - ...)

I didn't spot this! I think what i was really looking for when i was clicking
around was a show only this layer/route/c. option. I remember this being a
fairly intuitive thing to figure out in photoshop. The semantics would be a
little more involved given the nested layer structure, and i can't quite
remember how photoshop made it so obvious. Gimp has shift-click at least.
I'll think about exactly what i mean :) Thanks for pointing out the existing
functionality.

Otherwise window layout UI ones are saved automatically and only restored if
you use the Preference-Startup-Restore Window Setup

I can't get this to work: i enabled that option after opening Viking with no
arguments (and no default start up file), pressed F6 to get rid of the mark,
closed Viking and then restarted, and the center mark was back again.

? If you use the 'Select' tool you can drag route points. The Trackpoint
Edit tool, as the name suggest only works on Trackpoints. I was tempted to
remove the Trackpoint Edit tool mode and force using the Select tool but in
the end left the original UI as is.

Ah -- i never tried the select tool. This seems odd to me: the select tool
appears in the section of browsing tools rather than editing tools, and
already the track edit tool provides most of the editing features for the
route points. Select is nicer to use because it doesn't pop up the dialog,
but maybe it should be moved into the next tool bar section?

Probably - I never use these map types, so I don't notice when they go
 missing.

Me either -- but when you first start using Viking it's not encouraging to
find a large number of the maps don't do anything, so i thought it was worth
cleaning them up a bit. Maybe there needs to be a visible warning when
download fails.

The Wiki is a good place for a collection of potential tile sources a user
can add to their own configuration:
 https://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/viking/index.php?title=Maps

Ah, cool!

Best,

Matt

I don't really expect many people to read the fine manual.

Being a developer, you can of course read the fine source ;)

I expect most people to learn of these things by trail and error.

The restore window setup only does these:
.Window maximised or otherwise size
.Whether statusbar is shown
.Whether the layers panel is shown
.Whether the toolbar is shown

The cross hairs and scale is left to the settings in the .vik file.

I suppose I could extend the auto preferences to include these things and then
if Viking is opened with a Viking file then those settings in the .vik file
will take precedence.

Since the Select tool operates independent of the layer selected, it lives in
the VikWindow level of tools (which are Pan, Zoom Ruler)

Anyway also I think of Select is a kind of 'browse' tool.

Certainly some UI feedback about failing downloads should be done.

I will add something that reports failures to the Info section of the
statusbar.

[Viking-devel] Proposed Minor Features

2014-03-20 Thread Matthew Hague

Hey,

I've been building up a wish-list of minor tweaks to make to Viking. These
are all changes i more or less propose to make myself, but wanted to make sure
there were no major objections c.

+ Add an alpha component to the track/route colouring.
+ Show all / hide all c. for map layers / sub-layers.
+ Options to hide centre mark by default (and other show items).
+ Key binding for the go to location button. (A more general solution
might be a key-bindings config file.)
+ Ability to drag route points as well as track points.

I was also looking at the list of maps, and there are a few issues:

+ Terraserver (msrmaps) returns service unavailable. I guess it was
silently killed. Should it be removed from the list of maps?

+ I think spot maps is also gone.

+ Perhaps include other Bing imagery as well as the satellite (since you
have an API key).

+ hikebikemap.de has some nice tiles -- in particular you can (with some
poking around their site) download just their hill-shading. Adding this
layer gives any map a 3d look. I put the following in maps.xml for this:

  object class=VikSlippyMapSource
property name=labelBike and Hike Hill Shading/property
property name=hostnametoolserver.org/property
property name=url/~cmarqu/hill/%d/%d/%d.png/property
property name=id28/property
property name=copyrighthikebikemap amp; open street map
contributers/property
  /object

Presuming hikebikemap.de don't mind the abuse, maybe these layers could be
added to the list?

I've also noticed a few maps don't work at certain zoom levels. Perhaps the
maps could have min/max zoom level properties added, instead of making invalid
requests to the server. If the zoom is out of range, just the nearest valid
one could be displayed.

My plan was to pick these things off as and when i get around to them (which
is not so often these days). I'm also happy for others to pick them off
instead :)

Best,

Matt

Sounds good.
I'd probably put the control in the Tracks Property (to go along with the track
colour), rather than in Layer-Tracks Advanced tab.

 + Show all / hide all c. for map layers / sub-layers.

?
There
already are Show All/Hide All/Toggle options for any layers within an
Aggregate layer. (Right click on it - Visibility - ...)

May be you can expand in more detail what you have in mind.

+ Options to hide centre mark by default (and other show items).

I thought about this but decided it's not important enough to clutter the
preferences UI about this.
After all, the original 'Show' items are stored in .vik files. (X,scale
highlight)
Otherwise
window layout UI ones are saved automatically and only restored if you
use the Preference-Startup-Restore Window Setup

+ Key binding for the go to location button. (A more general solution
might be a key-bindings config file.)

Yes please.
I'm sure a key-bindings file is *much* more effort but that would be really
good.

+ Ability to drag route points as well as track points.

?
If you use the 'Select' tool you can drag route points.
The Trackpoint Edit tool, as the name suggest only works on Trackpoints.

Probably - I never use these map types, so I don't notice when they go missing.

+ Perhaps include other Bing imagery as well as the satellite (since you
 have an API key).

I believe the satellite imagery is the only allowed type.

+ hikebikemap.de has some nice tiles -- in particular you can (with some

This is already on the Ideas List:

(More Map Configuration part)

is not so often these days). I'm also happy for others to pick them off
