Hi,

It happens to me from time to time, for other files (usually it.po).
As far as I can tell, it means that the file has been (inadvertently)
modified.
To play it safe, I just clone the whole Vim distribution (removing the
current one), to be sure that all files are as they should be from the Vim
distribution.

Hi everybody,

I too will miss Bram a lot.

I am a minor contributor to Vim, for the translation of messages. I have
been in touch with Bram since the Nineties, and even visited him in Venlo.

I used to send new versions of language related files, like e.g.
"src/po/it.po" directly to Bram, who included them in the Vim distribution
without the need of patches. Pending further decisions, I will send future
modifications of such files to Christian Brabandt. This is not only about
me, but about a group of other translators. Bram sometimes sent mail to
this group, just before a new version of Vim was in sight.

VALE, Bram! We will try to keep up the good work.

I got a new version of Windows Insiders (Build 18894.1000), and the problem
is still there. Sooo, maybe it is some further check in Windows that it is
here to stay or whatever.

Looking into the help for 'runtimepath', in Windows, the first place
checked for a writable directory is $HOME/vimfiles (which in my case did
not exist yet). I just created that directory, (which for sure I am
authorized to use) and now everything is fine. I will just move my old
"en.latin1.add" etc. files there.

I would stop at that, and close the problem.

As far as I can tell, they should all be writable (I usually start Vim from
an Administrator cmd session).
As a matter of fact, "zg" worked fine at least up to March 20. I update
regularly Vim, through the nightly distribution and through recompiling
under Ubuntu. The nightly build Vim update, of course, would fail if I had
no proper authorizations.
I also regularly update Windows (I am in Windows Insiders). Maybe the thing
is WIndows related.
We could put this on hold, and I will try again with the next version of
Windows.

And, always as far as I can tell, both in the WIndows and in the Ubuntu
environments, "spellfile" gets a value only AFTER I give a "zg" command.

will try and see if I can get to it.
Also, I am not aware of any plugin that deals with "spellfile" (I am not in
the "plugin" business, per se, but I gladly accept what comes with the Vim
distribution).

Hi Jürgen,

it turns out that executing the same commands on the same file on the same
PC, using Windows Vim and using Ubuntu Vim, Vim does exactly the same
things, but in one case the message E764 is issued (Windows), while in the
other case it is not (Ubuntu). The situation can be appreciated looking at
lines 406-407 (Windows - file verbosew.out) and at line 359 (Ubuntu - file
verboseu.out) of the attached files.

The commands are:

:set spell spelllang=en

and

zg

I could try to solve the thing setting the option in my _vimrc/.vimrc, but
it is not a real solution, since I normally use different spell files in
the same session, (usually English and Italian), and one cannot simply
specify in which directory they all are.

But I feel that there is something done differently in Windows. I could try
to trace where it happens, but I am not sure to be able to propose a
correction.

I just checked, and I don't set the value in my .vimrc (neither in Linux
nor in Windows).

The Windows Vim tells me that the spellfile is not set:
 spellfile=

The Ubuntu Vim tells me that the spellfile is in:
 spellfile=~/.vim/spell/en.utf-8.add

Note that BEFORE giving a "zg" to add a word to the wordlist,
even the Ubuntu Vim tells me that there is no spellfile.
In other words, Vim does the assignment when needed.

As for the files themselves, they exist in Windows and have been used not a
long time ago:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Vim>dir *.add /s
 Il volume nell'unità C è OS
 Numero di serie del volume: BAF6-B607

 Directory di C:\Program Files (x86)\Vim\vimfiles\spell

Sooo, I guess that for some reason the Windows Vim can't define on the fly
the spell file (maybe for some authorization problem). Of course it used to
work just fine in the past.

If I try to define the spellfile (in Windows Vim) it does not seem to work.
Vim silently cuts a few chars at the end of the name, it does not complain,
but then the spellfile is not set.

:set spellfile="C:/Program Files (x86)/Vim/vimfiles/spell/en.latin1.add"

The final 'dd"' is dropped from the display, but the assignment is not done.

Should I try some "verbose" something?

Wrong message E764 in Windows 10

Hi everybody,

while editing a file (using Vim 8.1.1286) in Windows 10, giving a "zg"
command to add a word to the wordlist, I get an unexpected message (in
Italian -- which is fine)
"E764: opzione 'spellfile' non impostata", and the word is not added to the
wordlist, even if I had typed
:set spell spelllang=en
and the option had evidently been accepted (as shown from the fact that
only the non English words are underlined on the screen).
I tried to reproduce the problem under Linux Mint 19.1 (same version of
Vim), and it works as expected (i.e. the word is added to the wordlist).
Editing the very same file in the Ubuntu 18.04 APP on the same Windows PC
also does NOT show the problem. So, it seems to be Windows related. The Vim
executable has been downloaded from the Nightly "Vim Windows build
snapshots", i.e. I did not compile it myself (while I did for the Linux
Mint and Ubuntu versions).

I cannot answer for Bram, but my own philosophy is "find a way to make it
work". If this is not very linear, well, that's life. Neovim tries to
address your concerns. I don't really know how it works, but you could have
a look at it. I am happy with the *status quo* in Vim.

About the help files, there is a reason for all that.
The English tags file is named "tags". Every "national" file is named
tags-ll. Easy to find and easy to check. The READMEll.txt file is not
really necessary, but it explains something about the way the translation
was managed. For Italian, it also states the patchlevel of the translation.
The .llx files are the real thing and they can coexist with the .txt files
in the doc directory. It seems rather logical to me (maybe we don't have
the same perspective on the matter).
In my case, when I update a Vim help file, I just call a script (e.g.:
updaitx options). All the rest (managing tags, READMEit.txt) is buried in
the script.

Well, very few people are still using 8.3 systems.
So, that is no longer a problem, but it explains the choice
to go with three letter suffixes. Even today, most of the
Vim documentation (e.g. doc/options.txt) uses 8.3 names.
And yes, newer documentation is not limited to 8.3 character
names (e.g. pi_getscript.txt).

keep the third one fixed ("x") because in the old day of MS-DOS 8.3 names,
the suffixes were usually of three letters. I have no problem at all with

The "message" thing depends on how it is done "generally": all programs do
it that way.

As for the menus, they are all in a single place, which also makes sense to
me.

By the way, of course, there have been times in which Vim was
"English-only". The internationalization came bit by bit, and was placed in
the "easier" places.

As far as I can tell, what is needed for language "ll" is
a ZIPped file containing the
*.llx files, plus tags-ll, plus READMEll.txt
The files themselves are updated from time to time,
so the ZIPped file can change more or less once per month.
If the files are managed by Bram, then we could just send him
the updated ZIPped file for a given language.
If not, the maintainer should be able to upload files to vim.org.

That would involve checking the modification date of the ZIPped file,
the problem being that the modification date of the "last" version
should be available somewhere. The modification date of the tags-ll

updating the documentation, just to play it safe).

Having all the "doc" translations on www.vim.org is not necessarily a good
idea.

For Italian it would not be too complex (I have locally all the required
stuff). I also have all the "old" versions of the Italian docs, from Vim
6.2 onward.
But then someone should take care of loading the stuff on www.vim.org (and
be authorized to do so). As a matter of fact, I prepared the Vim 8.1
version of what has been translated into Italian, (and the "final" Vim 8.0
version) and its "loading" is pending on the "www.pluto.it" site (I am not
the maintainer there).

I have been using Vim since the Nineties, and I use gVim a lot.
I don't use a lot gVim's menu, I must admit... If you move the items in the
gVim menu, I won't complain... just leave alone the descriptions, or a lot
of translations of the menu should be modified. That's just me, I represent
only myself.

Hi everybody,

not sure if it is relevant or not, but I happen to edit VERY long files,
and the problem is the "undo". The undo file can grow VERY large, for
natural reasons. Since what I usually need is to filter out unneeded lines,
I usually type:

:setlocal ul=-1

(that means "no undo file, please")

for the interested file. That speeds up things a lot. If I need to
"remember" how the file was at a particular point, I just do :w now and
then. If I want to save the original file, I just get out from the editing
session with :q! (without having typed any intermediate :w ). The only
inconvenience is that you have to be careful with the commands you type...

Hi everybody,

generally speaking, killing the offending process should have been enough,
no need to reboot the machine.

I happen to edit huge files, and I usually type:

:setlocal ul=-1

BEFORE modifying the interested file. Of course, if the file is bigger than
the available memory, paging will occur all the same, but one avoids
problems with "undo".

It does not solve the issue, but it could help...

Hi everybody,

Italian is practically OK, but I have the following remarks:

syn match diffOnly "^Only in .*"
The format of the above [English] line is different (missing ": .*$")

syn match diffDiffer "^I file .* e .* sono diversi$"
should be:
syn match diffBDiffer "^I file binari .* e .* sono diversi$"

- "file binari", i.e. non-TEXT files

syn match diffIsA "^File .* è un .* mentre file .* è un .*$"
should be:
syn match diffIsA "^File .* è un/o/a .* mentre file .* è un/o/a .*$"

- reason is that "directory" in Italian needs "una" instead of "un".
- We could live also WITHOUT the "o/a" for the sake of simplicity.

Hi Philipp,

if you are just trying of eliminate stuff, but then you don't
need to really "undo" your changes, since you will not save
back the files at the end, I suggest you:

:set ul=-1

This should speed up things a lot.

Incorrect count printed for files bigger than 2GB

When writing out a file bigger than 2GB
the byte count in the message is wrong:

"myszkde.out2" 12259055L, -1821100713C written

VIM - Vi IMproved 7.3 (2010 Aug 15, compiled Dec 17 2010 22:31:48)
Included patches: 1-87

No matter to say, the (positive) sum of the two numbers gives:
4294967296, i.e. 2^33

(the file itself is OK)

Hi everybody,

it all depends on the use you do of this "feature".

In my case, it does not hurt a bit, but "your mileage may vary".

Nobody obliges one to insert "columns" in modelines.

If it is done, it should be for a good reason (it is,
at least in my case). Since by default no modeline is active,
in general the real damage should be very limited, and
not causing security problems, which is the main problem with
"modelines".

Sooo... I would stay with the present situation, which avoids
me to give "columns" in the few occasions in which I need to..

With the distributed gvim 7.3 invoked from MS-DOS (in Windows XP),
I get the error.
