There's advice on fixing stuck floppy drives here:

Worth trying perhaps.

Re: Classic II makes noise when mouse pointer moves on screen

2011-11-12 Thread Joe
Hi,

I finally found time to work with the Classic II again. Yes, the
sound is coming from the speaker. It makes the sound when I click on
a menu and hold it open, and when moving the mouse pointer around on
the screen. I let it run for around an hour then tested again and
found the sound was not there any more after a good warm up. After it
sits powered off for several hours and is turned on again the sound
returns. It happens when booted from the internal hard drive or booted
from a floppy so it appears to be a hardware issue.

Any ideas what it is or how to fix it?

Thanks,
-Joe

How loud is it? Even many modern computers can have a very faint

Re: Classic II makes noise when mouse pointer moves on screen

2011-11-12 Thread Joe
With the mouse pointer moving it is a slight buzz that while
noticeable is not a big deal and I can easily live with it. What has
me concerned is the louder, more attention grabbing sound that happens
when a drop down menu is displayed or a dialog box appears on the
screen. Other than this noise everything on the computer works
perfectly.

Thank you,
-Joe

Hi,
could anybody please help me with the part# for the Mac LC Apple IIe
Card Y-cable?

I have a number of these cards, the LC's and the UniDisks, but I need
the cable to tie them up together.

I am hoping to skip the DIY project of assembling the Y-cable myself.

Re: Classic II makes noise when mouse pointer moves on screen

Probably some filtering capacitors in the audio circuit need replaced. Pull the
board out and closely examine the tops of all the capacitors, the small
cylinders wrapped in plastic with a shiny metal end.

The metal ends will have some lines pressed in, usually in an X or a K shape.
Those are blowout vents. If something happens like a power surge those lines
are supposed to be a weak point to rupture instead of the capacitor exploding
and sending tiny conductive shrapnel into other circuitry.

The problem is some capacitor manufacturers used an unstable formula for their
capacitor electrolyte. (Google capacitor plague) Over time it decomposes and
swells up. The tops of the capacitors bulge and eventually break. If the base
plugs where the wires go in aren't good, the electrolyte can leak out there.

If you find bulged capacitors they need replaced. Bottom leaking ones can be
hard to spot if they've only leaked a little and didn't bulge the tops. Bottom
leakers are worse because the electrolyte can be corrosive and damage traces on
the circuit board.

If you don't want to take a soldering iron to your Classic II's mainboard there
are people who will do it for you. How much they charge for the service varies.
Some will replace every capacitor known to fail, some take the tack that if a
capacitor hasn't popped after so many years it's not going to, especially if
others on the same board already have.

That's what makes the electrolyte problem even worse, millions of the bad ones
were made and got mixed into the supplies that almost every electronics
manufacturer used for several years in the late 90's through early 00's. Some
things got made with most or all bad caps, some things got only a few or even
just one. I have a circa 2005 PC power supply with a single leaking capacitor,
which I need to get replaced to make it good again.

1 month after house fire: safe to start macs?

Hello,
I have been a collector of vintage computers all my life, and next year, I

my house burned to the ground, and my dad was diagnosed with throat cancer.
Well I sorted through the aftermath already, and all I have left are smoke

Are they worth trying to power up?
I don't want to electrocute myself or mess up my electrical system, but if
none of these work, ill be selling parts pretty soon. Thanks!

We can't know. Are the power supplies intact? Are the hulls damaged? How?
Were they near the hottest point of the fire, or in the far whereabouts? No
really, we don't know, and we can't know.

If they're kind of expendable (some CRT may blow) you can risk it, though.
I'd get a switchable powerstrip, tie one of them up, switch closed, open
the switch, get behind a corner (anyway, CRT tubes implode, as they are
vacuum bubbles, but they operate on high voltages, and without a faraday
cage, they are never safe enough when compromised) and fire it up trough
the keyboard.

I don't think they could start a NEW fire, *but an estinguisher at hand
wouldn't hurt.

RE: 1 month after house fire: safe to start macs?

2011-11-12 Thread Wesley Furr
Sorry to hear of your misfortune. :-( Any chance your insurance will cover
replacements purchased via ebay or wherever?

I'd say you don't have anything to lose! I like someone's suggestion about
a power strip to turn them on with...I would even sit it outside on the
sidewalk or something to be really safe...though worst-case, it would
probably just pop and spark and blow something internally...

I once worked on a computer that had been submersed in a flood. The fans
and floppy/CD drive were shot, but everything else was fine after I scrubbed
them in the sink with a toothbrush and running water. Even the hard drive
was just fine...

-Original Message-

If it's been a month, they should power up fine after submersion...
The hard drives might be dead though.

Re: 1 month after house fire: safe to start macs?

2011-11-12 Thread Gregg Eshelman
The drives are most likely toast. Circuit boards can be cleaned with soapy
water, rinsed then either placed out in the sunlight to dry or in a dehydrator
for a couple of hours at around 80F. Take the power supplies apart and clean
them too.

The cooling fans might be trashed from rusting. Brushless DC fans can tolerate
being wet but they need rinsed and dried in short order.

Any speakers in them will be ruined from water damage to the paper cones.

So unless you're willing to spend some time on cleanup and investing in
replacement floppy drives, hard drives, CD-ROM drives and speakers, parting
them out would be best, though in as-is condition they won't bring much. To get
best price you'll need to at least have enough good parts to test other parts
after cleaning.

Submersed initially but I put them on tables after the fire department came and
soaked everything.

So these machines were actually -submersed-?  Or were they parked on tables

-above- the 3 ft of water?
