Re: Install 7.5.3 without CD drive
The 6500 comes from the 5500... You talk about a optional ethernet card so it must the card on comm slot. Those cards usually don't have handshake so they can't link on modern switch/routers. You will need a old ethernet 10Mbit hub to connect the 6500 and link it up to the router. Joao On Sunday, March 16, 2014 1:10:38 AM UTC, Louis Ciotti wrote: Well the 6500 has the optional ethernet card, but I have not gotten it to work, but your comment about finding a router to work with half duplex has me wondering if that is the issue. I have an new Asus GB ethernet router and the have only tried the 6500 connected to a GB switch that ggoes to that Asus router. Good news is I also found an apple AAUI to 10BaseT adapter today, so that should work with the 660AV. So I sould be able to use the one of the SCSI to ethernet on the SE/30 assuming I can locate the drivers for them correct? If so not my only missing link is the router. The Mac Mini is a G4 so Tiger would be no problem to put on it. On Saturday, March 15, 2014 8:37:53 PM UTC-4, Jordan Utolia wrote: Yes I have noticed that earlier. I am sure the site owner is updating his hardware or something. Check back in a few days. For a pure ethernet network, you'll need NICs for the SE/30 and the 6500 if it doesn't have a PCI or optional Ethernet card. The 660AV can just use that AAUI port for an adapter, freeing up expansion slot(s) for other things. Then you'll need to procure a router that won't have hiccups with 10BASE-T half-duplex -- I merely used a DLink WBR1610, which is an old router. (I tried a NetGear WVR614v9 and it didn't work.) Add the Mac mini and you'll be done -- but I don't know if it can run Tiger or not, which is the last to work with all three computers at once. RE: Retr0brite???
I have used it on some white (turned brown) pinball parts. All I used was high concentration peroxide gel from hair salon + oxiclean, nothing else, mixed it real well, waited for it to foam up, and just kept brushing it on the plastic in the sunlight, no gar gum, no heating up, worked well, it was more of a watch it, keep applying process, but much simpler imho. Re: Install 7.5.3 without CD drive
Well I actually got the 6500 ethernet card working last night. I plugged it directly into the mac mini and gave it a static IP address and bam it worked. Then plugged it into the switch it worked. Even with DCHP. But not I hosed the CD attempting to put the computer back into the original state. So Now unless I can figure out how to get an OS installed on it I have to wait until the restore CD I purchased comes it. :-/ I have 7.6.1 floppies, but they all state they will not work with this machine. I am assuming it is because the system enabler is incorrect. I tried to replace it, but there is not enough room on the floppy disk even after removing everything else but the system folder. You can connect computers directly with a cross-over cable in an emergency, skipping troublesome routers and switches. Some newer computers, I think the Mac mini G4 is among them, have automatic cross-over or straight switching but I wouldn't rely on that. You can absolutely use the SCSI adapter with the SE/30. Better bet is to get a PDS NIC for it, but those are about 40-50 bucks and don't always show up often. (SE/30s are genuinely desirable and NICs for them are usually complementary.) You'll *need* the driver for the SCSI thing, you can find either one on macdrivermuseum or other places. While you're at it, you might want to think about how you can make your Emergency Network Access Disks -- I have a section on the Guide that talks about those. Sit tight for a little bit on the Guide -- it sounds like it would be quite useful for you. Re: Classic Mac Network
Could you use the 6500 as a bridge? IIRC it has a 10Base-T built in. If it doesn't, could you maybe source an Ethernet card for it? I face the same issue for my own network but that's a future plan. I have to build the workshop in my attic first and then install my networking infrastructure including a wired link to the garage and a wireless AP for garden surfing. I have been successful in building both LocalTalk and Ethernet networks but I have never had an occasion to combine them. Good luck with your research! The dunk method is what I'd recommend if you have a LOT of stuff to cover. You can also get UV lamps and toss the whole shebang in your garage overnight. Here's an even easier method: 1.) Get a spray bottle, 1L size. 2.) Get some Oxy-product. I went to a laundromat and paid 75c for a small packet of Oxy-something. (Didn't need or want a large quantity of it.) Get two bottles of regular H2O2 hydrogen peroxide (two liters total). 3.) Pour a liter of H202 into a sauce pan and get it to about 40 or 50 degrees C. (This helps dissolve the solute better. 40 deg C is 104 F, 50 deg C is about 120 F.) 4.) For each liter of hydrogen peroxide, add 5ml (about teaspoon) of Oxy-product. Shake vigorously for about five minutes. 5.) Place the plastic product to be blasted outside. Full sun required. Use your sprayer to spray the unit about once every 30 to 45 seconds. Essentially, keep it wet all the time. Even better, grab a book and a chair, prop yourself up in the shade within range of the sprayer, and just go to town. If you want to go big-scale, then just get one of those pesticide dispensers that your pour in water and pesticide/herbicide/whatever. Pour in the proper mixture of H202, shake it all well (so there is no particulate matter on the bottom), pressurize the container, and then all you have to do is pull the trigger. I've heard that spray bottles and soaked cloths can both be tough to get even coatings on the unit. Also, it's easy to miss corners and parts of bezels. Best results I've heard of are nearly always related to dunking methods, even if only 1 surface at a time is dunked and allowed to cure. Time consuming but pretty effective. I did a SE/30 back, faceplate, M1106 keyboard and mouse with this method and it came out great. -- -- - You received this message because you are a member of the Vintage Macs group. Re: Retr0brite???
About two hours per side. It really was quite easy. Bring sun glasses -- you'll need them. Now that I think about it, that pressurized pesticide idea is the way I'd do it next. The cloth method I would be concerned for two reasons: 1) the solution must be kept constantly fresh for it to work, and 2) the cloth may inhibit a certain portion of UV rays from going to work. The problem with the gel method is uniformity and that it loves to dry out on the unit. You'll get streaks if it's not done right. Mixing the conoction is a little tricky to get a uniform blend. Then it has to constantly refreshed anyways, which is why the sprayer method really shines. The dunk is really only worth it if you going to do more than three computers. If you have five Portables, two 840AVs, a slew of Compacts and a entire hoard of rodents and keyboards, it's the way to go. You just have to add more Oxy-product from time to time to refresh it. If you want to get really cool, you get (or make) your own aquarium style unit. Then you make holes in the bottom for the mixture to drain into a lower reservoir. Add a submersible pump and some irrigation sprayers, UV lamps and you'd be set. RE: Retr0brite???
I haven't tried it...but in doing some reading, it sounds like they results may not be permanent. I read of at least one person who had a restored system stored in a box (no exposure to UV light) and it had re-yellowed at least somewhat. Hi all, I was wondering if anyone had experiences using retr0brite on any cases here, I want to clean up my IIgs, IIci, an SE, and various mice and kb's but I don't want to kill the cases in the process. Just wondering if anyone has tried and what their experiences were. Peter J Hall -- -- -- - You received this message because you are a member of the Vintage Macs group.
