Electrolytic caps discussion

2013-10-19 Thread j...@jagdt.com

Hello,

concerning the question of how drying electrolytic capacitors will
influence
the function of old radios etc. the main difference is digital to
analog.

ANALOG
--
In case of old radios or also an old amplifier I build some decades
ago, you
will hear an increasing hum because of the mains supply frequency, the
output
power will be reduced, but in most cases there will be no other
effect. If the
electrolytic was used for some (critical) functions other than
filtering in the

supply, there may be instabilty or other degradations.

DIGITAL
---
In case of a computer, drying electrolytics will increase digital
noise until
the treshold is reached where the state (1/0) of the signal is changed
randomly.
Then the computer will produce wrong results or simply crash or not
even start.

IN GENERAL
--
Another point is the financial question - in the past the quality of
the parts
was not as good as today, but the engineers added some margin to be on
the safe
side, bigger capacity than needed, higher voltage limit etc. Today to
save
money the engineers are forced to go to the limits or beyond in the
case of

intended limitations of product life - build in breaking point ;-)

There was also a time where component suppliers tried to save money at
the wrong

place resulting in reduced lifetime of the electrolytics.

When calculating life expectation of an electrolytic you can use a 85
degree type
or a 105 degree type let us say with 2000h guaranteed life time - the
latter will

typically work 4 times longer with the same ambient temperature.

The last point is miniaturisation, the samller the part, the lesser is
the amount
of liquid in the part, also the quality of the sealing may be
affected. The latter
is also a question of component price. The pictures I saw from the
SE's or SE/30's

it looks like the sealing failed.

Let me end with an additional remark concerning the SE and SE/30. I
would replace the
electrolytics with Multilayer Ceramic Capacitors (MCCs) of suitable
size (matching the
pads I mean..) These parts will never dry out. Today there are MCCs
with 22u / 10V or
better easily available. Stack two of them one over the other and you
will have 44u.

that will fit as replacement for the 47u electrolytic.

Regards Frank

Signed Mac 128K

2014-02-01 Thread j...@jagdt.com
Hi Tom,

nice souvenir. No matter if the signatures on the outside match the ones
inside. A lot of people contribute to the 30 years of Apple's history -
also Mr. Sculley, even if some people perhaps may not like him ..

We say, we will not meet again as young as we are now - it was a real
opportunity to meet all these Apple people at one place.

Thank you for sharing the pictures.

Re: Mac iici. In great working condition

2017-02-11 Thread j...@jagdt.com
Concerning batteries, the first thing I do with a newly acquired
Mac is removing the Lithium-batteries when I do not use the Mac
on a regular basis.

I too bought some Mac II and Macintosh Plus, SE, SE/30 with completely
destroyed main boards due to leaked or exploded batteries.

The other point is the risk of fire especially with the larger LiIon’s
of Laptops (MacBooks …) I keep these in a 40 to 60% capacity range
and and store them outside the Laptop if possible.
