Re: My Newest Compact....a Performa 5xxx?
I went to a farmer's market a while back, and they had a computer shop. Among others, they were selling a 6100 DOS 40/1GB w/monitor, KB, mouse for $250, a Q605 for $175, and a SE for $75. Also, they had a 128k, with KB and mouse, in the carry bag for $75. They even had Apple ][ series systems in the $50 area. When I saw the prices, I started laughing. I bet a few people were staring at me... Meanwhile, though, the fellow who puts stuff out at Thrift Town here seems to have lost touch with reality: He's offering a complete Macintosh system of a IIci, monitor and One Scanner for $90a complete IBM 486 system is (teehee) $249.00. He has $20 on an Apple TwoPage mono display, and I bought mine there a few months ago for $3.99. I've bought seven or eight IIci's there for $7.99 or less. I think he's got heatstroke, or else discovered eBay ;-) -- Vintage Macs is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Depends on the ROMs, but I can't think of any 020s that are 32-bit clean, so that would be 7.5.5 for both. 7.6 actually *isn't* the last for the 030s; Mac OS 8.1 will run on them too with a shareware product called Born Again. Details are in the FAQ. Oh, and 7.6.1 is later than 7.6 and runs on all the 030s except the IIcx, IIx, and SE/30 just fine, with no patching (a la Born Again). They seem to stomp on anyone who runs a site supporting older machines these days. My proof? Fire up Anarchie and see how many of those sites are Empty or That's not proof. I hate to sound argumentative, but Anarchie was last distributed in the late 1990s, and IIRC, the version you have is from about '97 or so. I challenge you to find more than about six-of-25 of ANY kind of Mac-oriented server that have been around since then and were big enough then to get noticed. Info-Mac has moved since then. A lot of the Info-Mac mirrors have disappeared. Pacific Hi-Tech no longer distributes the CD collections of the Info-Mac archive that they used to. MacUser is defunct in the US. MacWeek is dead. Broadband 'net access has killed a lot of that sort of thing and moved a lot more of it to less-obvious places, like Hotline (which was essentially nothing in 1997) and its variants and Gnutella (which didn't even exist until last year). I have several versions of Anarchie (and Fetch and TurboGopher, etc) and I know that some of the schools have said that the reason they pulled down their archives was due to pressure from Apple and fees involved in their maintaining them. What I can't figure, though, is why (or anyone else) would care if there are 25 mirrors of the same stuff. Anything you need online, applications-wise, is either at Info-Mac, AMUG, Apple FTP, or a pirate site. There are still plenty of obscure sites out there; I for one think it's probably a GOOD thing that Interarchy doesn't have bookmarks to them any more because it means thousands of people aren't getting a built-in shortcut to it, which means that Apple is less likely to find out about it if it's something they don't want posted. I could cite several examples, but, well, that would draw attention to them. p _ the pickle The FAQ http://macfaq.binhost.com/ The Archive http://www.jmug.org/software/thepickle/ _ -- Vintage Macs is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: MP3 Player for LC III
Either MacLaunch (like most listservs) uses a FILO (First In - Last Out) buffer or e-mail travels faster than light so you see all the replies before ever seeing the original message. ;) P.S. If you do plug 36 megs into that LCIII and try playing an MP3 with SoundApp, you'd better have a tape recorder handy cuz I'll bet you won't want to try playing a second MP3 on it. ;) MP3 on a 68k Mac definately falls into the Do it just to prove it CAN do it! box. --- the pickle [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: At 08:09 +0700 on 23/08/01, Suwartono wrote: I'm a new member here.
