Yeah. It's about time that stopped. Apple can continue using it
because it is a product line, but everyone else should just knock it
off.

Fruity colored consumer products are getting old too. Do you really
need a translucent Lime cordless phone to use while cooking with your
Strawberry Lean Mean Fat Reducing Grilling Machine? Hell, even Apple
has all but abandoned it.

Just watch, there is going to be a backlash against all of this stuff.

Clock chipping the IIsi.

2001-09-01 Thread Hardy Menagh

Aqua, Go to Schrier's "Clock Chipping Home Page" and click on Machine
Specifics, Modification 1. I think there's a link in the p's FAQ, or do
a search.

The socket allows you to swap oscillators. I was contentedly running my
IIsi at 27.7MHz until I tried to put a Nubus Adapter in it, then no
boot. It was a simple matter to pull one oscillator and pop in the one
that runs it at 25MHz. Yeah, I'd go with the socket. Who wants to keep
pulling the board and heating up the iron every time you want to make a
change? Not to mention wear and tear on the board in that spot.

OE sells a kit for $15 + minimal shipping (and they are on your side of
the country). If you price this stuff from Digi-Key, it's either at or
below cost with no outrageous handling charge. This includes the two
oscillators, a socket and a nice heatsink plus the directions from the
website. If you need more specifics than they provide, let me know. Peel
the heat transfer tape off the heatsink and get some heat transfer PASTE
(Radio Shlock is one supplier). The tape will do more harm than good but
don't skip the heatsink especially if you run it at 27MHz.

As previously mentioned you will have to clip some pins off the socket
OE supplys. Don't take your time soldering it to the board. It's plastic
and will melt. Hot iron, solder quickly. No fears. :)

Re: transferring files

2001-09-01 Thread A.Tuazon

I do recall transferring files between two machines (a IIsi and a Classic)
via AppleTalk. I connected the two machines through the printer ports using
an 8 pin serial cable (the rounded end cables) and set up the classic as the
server and the IIsi as the client (the files were on the Classic and I
wanted them moved to the IIsi). Once connected, it was a matter of just
dragging and dropping.

Hope this helps.

Phone net and local talk. Set up the sending units hard drive with a
password
and ID, then connect the phone talk units to the printer ports, go into
chooser from the receiving unit and choose the sender's hard drive and drag
and drop to your heart's content.

List Mom's Pet Peeve

2001-09-01 Thread Dan Knight

My pet peeve is people who quote too much when replying to the list. In
particular, people who quote the entire original message right down to
the footer.

As many of you know, I send out a reminder whenever I see that. It reads:

---
This is a semi-automatic message from Dan, the listmom.

Thanks for posting to the list.

Please be careful not to quote *too much* of the original message (your
recent posting is quoted below) when replying to the list -- especially
the header and/or footer. (You're not being singled out; we send this to
everyone who does that.)

Thanks!
---

Since August 24, I've sent out 105 such messages to 85 different
subscribers. The encouraging thing is that most seem to catch on quickly,
eliminating the need for multiple notes. Those who get more than 4-5 of
these notes may have posting privileges suspended -- I'm that serious
about it.

Anyhow, here's an analysis by domain. Each subscriber is only counted
once, and only domains with 2 or more reminders since August 24 are
counted:

 yahoo.com
 mac.com III
 bellsouth.net III
 earthlink.net III
 sympatico.caIII
 home.comII
 mindpring.com II
 rcn.com II

For those of you who look down on AOL users, only one AOL user showed up
on this list. Maybe that means AOL makes it hard to quote back or quote
back too much -- I don't know.

It's interesting that far and away the highest number of offenses came
from free email services. I suspect that Yahoo makes it too easy to quote
the entire original -- am I right?

For the record, here are the most popular domains on the LEM-Swap list,
our list with the most subscribers (710 active subscriptions as of this
morning):

 yahoo.com 66
 mac.com 64
 aol.com 57
 earthlink.net 43
 home.com29
 hotmail.com 22

All the rest are under 10 subscribers on the LEM-Swap list. I'm assuming
membership on that list is fairly representative of the other lists.

Consider this your occasional reminder from the List Mom to be aware of
how your email program works and be careful to quote selectively when
replying to the list.

Thanks!

I get a Bus Error (Error Code 1) when I play Despair. While I love this
game I do weary of the wrrors. Funny thing is, not every copy of this game
does this to me.

Played it last night (errors and all) on my IIci (7.5.5, 32M RAM, 400+ M HD)

How's this? (Just kidding...)
Thanks, Dan. It's one of my pet peeves, too. (Living in Japan, I have
lots of other ones, too ;-)

I've been lurking on this list for a few months now. Hope nobody will
find my sudden "me too" to Dan's post obtrusive...

>Consider this your occasional reminder from the List Mom to be aware of

Here's a hint for quoting parts of messages when using Eudora. I just
learned it recently (somebody told me), so it's possible other Eudora
users don't know it either.
Select the part of the message you want to quote.
Hold down the Shift key while replying (Command + R or "Reply" button).
Only the selection will be included in your reply.
This use of the Shift key is pretty intuitive for Mac users, but like
I said, somebody had to teach me this trick so it may be new to some.
Do the other e-mail programs work similarly?

Also, I always use the Option key when replying because I like to
include the "At Star Date 3743 Mr. Sulu wrote:" line; but then you
have to always check to be sure your Cc: line doesn't include extra
addresses (such as a second "<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>"
address identical to the one in the "To:" line) because, as you know,
the Option key is the tool to "Reply to all".

The "Paste as Quotation" feature in Eudora is useful too. (I
discovered this one all by myself !) It also adds the "Star Date"
line automatically. Check it out.

HTH,
Rodney

OSX's 'mail' does the same - hit reply with nothing selected and it's
all quoted - select text and hit reply and only that bit is copied as a
quote.

Not that OSX is vintage - but I do read the list on it :D. Perhaps

It's up. Anyone who wants Splitz&Joinz, email me for the URL. It
has Mac, Amiga, DOS and Windoze versions. You can split a file into
any size chunks you want, on any platform & rejoin it on any.
Of course, the Mac version works best... Just drag 'n' drop to
split or join.

Cheers,
