Yeah, works great, just very slow.

You can't just connect both HDs (possibly using one in an external case),
can you? That'll be a lot faster.

Re: Slots in LC III

2001-09-02 Thread Alex Allee

OK, just so I am clear here

Q605
-
The four slots by the Power Supply are for RAM and white slots (large one
and a small one) across the board are the PDS slot(s)?

The two slots right next to the PSU are VRAM slots. The one white
slot near the middle of the board is a RAM slot, where the RAM goes
in somewhat diagonally. The large white slot on the far side of the
board (3 rows of 40 (?) pins) is the PDS slot.

Performa 450

The 2 slots by the PS and 2 by the fan are for RAM and the white ones (just
like those mentioned above) are the PDS slot(s)?
Is the large square slot labeled U13 (near the CPU) for an FPU?

The slot parallel to the PSU is for VRAM, the one perpendicular to
the PSU (and right along the fan) is for RAM. Again, the white
connector on the far side of the board (3x40) is the PDS slot. The
square socket (U13) is for an FPU.
(This is a Rev.B board, but I believe the Rev.A board is the same.)

Re: Slots in LC III

2001-09-02 Thread Steve Conrad

OK, the LCIII is listed as having One RAM slot and 4M built in (this list
doesn't say Performa 450 so I assume its the same physically)

The Q605 also has One RAM slot (as per this list)

Now a fresh question. Why does it say the LCII (Performa 405) cannot have
an FPU (not even listed as an option) yet I have read that you can stick
one in the PDS slot (68882)? Also, the LC doesn't have one listed as an
option yet I read that you can stick one in the PDS slot (68881).

Then I pull it off insert the disktool disk to test the mac if it's

That the hard disk is probably bad, or is missing terminating resistors and
is causing a hardware fault from a damaged component on the controller ( the
circuit board on the back of the hard drive.

Gain access to another hard drive and reboot it.

Is there any low level format software that ca nfit in a disk tool ?

Someone told me that if I replace the apple harddisk with another
harddisk, sometime it won't boot. Is that true ?

 Jakarta, 03 September 2001 (8:14)

When using a hard drive not from or for Apples, the Apple formatting
software won't always format the drive. A third-party formatter like
Lido 7.56, Micronet SCSI Utility or APS Utility will work much of the
time.

These are available on the Internet as free or trial-basis downloads.
Just search by the names above to find site s from which to download.

You just have to format it with a non-Apple hard disk utility, or
hack Apple's. Hard Disk SpeedTools is apparently the best.

575 CCs of Mac, stat!

2001-09-02 Thread Galen Tatsuo Komatsu

My latest thrift find is a Performa 575 CPU, Cost me $10...odd
thing, the same store also had an LC575 nearby, the Power supply fan
venting was ripped out and it lacked any SIMMs or a PRAM battery, plus it
wouldn't power up (no chime, I'm guessing because of the lack of memory
and/or battery,) yet it was priced at about $20. The P575 powered up and
greeted me with a puzzled floppy, CDROM drawer wouldn't respond either.

But all that meant to me was I now have my 575 board to revive my
dead Color Classic. =^) And a bigger HD to upgrade the stock 80meg and
a CDROM and floppy should I decide to strip those.

...on that note, anyone on Oahu (...uh, Lee?) wants a free P575 shell?
No motherboard, no HD, may or may not have a floppy and CDROM. RF
shielding along the bottom is a bit rusted.

As with all old CPUs I pick up, I checked out what's on the HD.
Nothing really special, most of the default apps that come with the
machine. Oddly the Hard Drive was empty and the System folder and
Finder were all over the place. Also found a bunch of papers someone
wrote two years ago, with an email address...kinda tempted to write
the person and see what kind of problems they had with the machine. =^)

Anyway, I popped the board into my CC, just to see if it would
fly as is. *bong* Startup screen. Bus Error. Tried it again with the
7.5 Disk Tools disc, same result. oh, well, time to go looking up the
pages on it and bugging the people on the Vintage Macs list. =^)

I know there's web pages out there that have written on the
subject, but if memory serves me, many are in funky Japanized English.
Thus in the meantiem I thought I'd pick the minds of people here who have
done it.
