Cool Hardware Store Sighting

2002-06-09 Thread Galen Tatsuo Komatsu

The other day I went to the local hardware store (well, actually it's some
10 miles away, but it's a local chain,) and looked around at the Sauder
furniture models. Sauder makes build it yourself furniture, you get a
box of pre-cut boards and you get to hammer it together and feel like Norm
Abrham for an afternoon.

Usually to model the finished product they have cardboard boxes printed
with images of VCRs, computers, etc. But I noticed something odd about
the desk I saw. On it sat an Apple 20 monitor! (don't remember offhand
the proper name for it.) Another desk sported a Mac Plus, and around the
corner was a PowerMac 7100 tucked into one of the bays.

Don't know if they worked or not, none were plugged in, but they weren't
empty shells. the 7100's cover was loose and at 2 cards, a HD, etc.

Past comes back to haunt me...help

2002-06-09 Thread dan_A

--
Hello all-
I'm new to this list and I have a peculiar problem.

I recently took my old IIci out of mothballs. I had gotten an
ethernet card for 5.95 on ebay and also picked up a hub. I plan to
use it for email. After setting it up with the right software, using
the Pickle's faq, (I'm on the compact mac list as well as the
SuperMac list) I ran into my own history. Sometime in 1990, I had
passworded the IIci and in order to mount the IIci or the SuperMac, I
need to supply the pw. I tried everything I thought I might have used
but cant hit the right one. Everything else appears to be working.
Anyone know what prefs or what else I can dump or change to get
around this problem? This is frustrating and I don't know how to get
around it. I used Net Install ZM-1.5 to work with sys 7.5.3 on the
IIci. The computer I'm networked to is a Umax S900, with os 9.1 and
is upgraded to G4 and 1gb of ram. Both computers see each other in
their choosers but are asking for passwords.

help!

Thank you.

Any idea what software you used? Or are you just talking about File Sharing?

If the latter, you can simply throw out the preferences related to file
sharing and you should be good to go. You can also just go into the
Sharing Setup control panel and change the password there.

I'm talking about file sharing I guess. I can't change the pw without
putting in the old one. I tried tossing the file sharing prefs and
restarted. It produced no change. Asking for the pw happens when I go
to the chooser and choose Appleshare, which is on the ethernet. I can
see the other computer show up in the chooser window as it should-
and when I hit ok I get the password window for that computer. Thank
you for your quick response.

What happens if you do a clean install of the OS on the machine with the

I don't remember if I ever had the 7.5.3 disk. I think I upgraded via
downloads and I have had non of that software for years. I do think
that a clean install would work and I do have a sys 8.0 disk but I'm
working with 32mgs of ram on the IIci and I dont know if it will
install and run okay. I also have a non Apple cd player attached to
the IIci that needs its extension to become available so I would not
be able to start up with the os 8 cd. I used to have that problem all
the time and went thru contortions to get new system os's on. The cd
player is an old Spirit machine, and is so slow that it probably
runs at -1 speed.

OS 8 won't boot a IIci - at least not without software mods that you
obviously can't do on a CD-ROM - anyway.

Okay. Great! I could take that path. I'm removing some other prefs to
see if I can worm around the problem. I just dumped 3 items: Apple

I couldn't open the chooser so I'll try putting them back one at a

If I am getting this correctly, when you try to mount a shared volume
or folder residing on the IIci from the Umax, it is asking for a user
name and password before it will mount. Perhaps the situation is more
complicated than this, but if not, then there are two places where
users and passwords can be set.

First, in the File Sharing control panel, you can give the computer an
owner and password. So, on the IIci, open the file sharing dialog.
You should be able to change the owner and password there. If you do
that, you should be able to log on to the IIci from the Umax by giving
that username and password when the chooser asks from it.

Second, the users and groups control panel (the Multiple Users control
panel in OS 9.1), allows you to add users to your machine and give them
the privilege to mount your volumes or folders. On the IIci, open the
users groups control panel and create a new user and give it a
password. You should then be able to mount volumes and folders shared
on the IIci from the Umax using one of the new user names and
passwords.

I hope that it is that simple for you.
