8.1 to OS X AppleTalk
Having done nothing in particular to my 7100cx I now can't mount any OS X Based AppleTalk shares that require a password, it just tells me the password is wrong. It is not (I'm pretty sure) upgrading to OS X 10.3 that did id, but might maybe 10.3.1? It works fine with Classic Networking. So I'm wondering if the ColorLink has the same problem. Jeff Walther There are three versions of the ColorLink. COLORLINK DC/T COLORLINK SX/2 COLORLINK SX/T None of which has any info I can find about an ethernet daughtercard. If you can list the exact model, maybe more info can be found. Yes, the info in the video section on Lowendmac.com is pretty sketchy on these cards. For one thing, I have the XL2, which isn't even mentioned. For another, all of the above cards have 10baseT built in (not on a daughter card) but that isn't mentioned. The XL2 has a 10base2 connector, the BNC you mention in your next posting, I suspect. The daughter card ethernet is on the Futura IISX. The Colorlink had it built in to the main card. I guess that was the Colorlink's claim to fame. Anyway, googling turned up about six links. There's somewhat more in dejanews (google groups) but nothing about Open Transport compatibility. Most of the posts probably predate wide spread use of Open Transport. On the death of a IIfx
For anyone who wondered what the life expectancy is of IIfx without a fan, I have the answer: it is short. I have tried it with a modified IIfx (no hard disk (major heat producer), very lowend video card and enough holes to get rid of heat), it didn't work. The strain on the psu was just to much. It took the machine about 3 weeks to die. Vintage macs that can work without a fan are the LC, the LC II and the IIsi, as has been proofed by myself and other people. I am going to look for a IIsi now. Re: 8.1 to OS X AppleTalk
Why should one want to use appletalk when running mac os 8.1 on the client machine? Appletalk is an inferior protocol that should be avoided when you have the alternative of IP. The only reason I am using it is because of my laserwriters being appletalk only and my personal server (fanless LC running AppleShare 3) also not being able to share via IP.
