I have tried it with a modified IIfx (no hard disk (major heat producer), very lowend video card and enough holes to get rid of heat), it didn't work. The strain on the psu was just to much. It took the machine about 3 weeks to die. Vintage macs that can work without a fan are the LC, the LC II and the IIsi, as has been proofed by myself and other people. I am going to look for a IIsi now.
