64 pin ram

2003-01-13 Thread R.A. Cantrell
I've dug some 64 pin modules out of some Laserwriter boards and would like
to know what they are. One pair came off a board that also had 1 72 pin simm
on it. The other pair came off a board that also had 2 30 pin simms. The
latter 64's seem to be labeled ROM. I don't know much about any of this,
but hte end in mind is to know if this stuff is ram and if it will run in a
IIfx.

Yes - auto inject 2MB with no dust cover. Warn him also that the
screws that hold the drive in the bay are often hard to get out and
he will have to be careful he doesn't chew the screw heads up or
sheer the screws - I speak from sore personal experience!

copies of Windows 3.1 were exactly that, copies. So they wanted this charity
organisation, run with virtually no money at all, who was doing a great
service to the community at the same time saving heaps of PC junk from
landfill (and computer waste is nasty for mother earth), to pay something
like AUD$200 per licence for each machine!

Take the Supermac card out till you get the machine to run. How is your ram

OS copyright

2002-07-31 Thread R.A. Cantrell

I'm starting this on the Vintage Macs because it might be the case that many
vintage Mac users/owners find themselves using upgraded software re
Operating Systems.
We've had several strings that have discussed the do's and don'ts, right and
wrongs about using software with . . .or without owning it, but I have a
couple of lingering questions.
If you are using a computer with an Operating System installed on the hard
drive, it seems reasonable that the creator and copyright owner require that
you have the disk and therefore the right to use his/her intellectual
property, and that if you use it in violation of that requirement you be
deemed guilty of infringement of his/her copyright and subject to penalty,
civil and/or criminal. What about having that same Operating System
installed on a computer that is sitting in the corner of the room, not
being used? (hold on, I'm building up to a question). How about that same
Operating System installed on a hard drive that is not in a computer,
but that is just sitting on your desk? Are you just a guilty as in the
instance where the OS is in immediate use? How about on a computer
sitting out in the garage with an OS on the HD that you have no disk
for?
I'm not really interested in hearing a bunch of practical advice in the
matter, but in discussing the abstract principles involved.

They have AAUI jacks, the sort of squiggly looking ones. I found a page
with pictures of Mac connectiods, so I'm sure that's what they are. The LC
520s came with cards. I have a 6100 AV that has builtin AAUI. Will have to
come up with a card for the IIci--I'm not sure if the cards from the 520s
would work. And I picked up a Duo 230. Haven't looked at it carefully
enough to know what it has, as I haven't tested it yet to make sure it
 works.

 B. How many machines are you going to net

At this point, a 6100 AV, IIci, Duo 230, Quadra 640, and at least one LC
 520. I also would like to hook up one laser printer. I'm thinking 8
 connections might be enough.

You need a hub and patch cables, you may also need tranceivers to get
everything into rj-45 connectors. I've got a few Apple tranceivers $7 each.
No hub, no patch cables. I have some NuBus cards with rj-45 jacks $5 each.

The easiest deal is the PPC MoBo from a 6300cd. Plug and play. A 6320 is
spiff (110 mhz). A 6360 MoBo requires a new PS and a few other things,

have cache cards? How big a HD can you put in it? It only has 5 mgs of
ram 4x1 and 4x256k. Anybody want it? I don't have any 30 pin ram to put

Nope, nor did I look inside the 100 7100/66s. I have goodies amighty now

bulk parts by ransacking the boxes. The Macs that I passed up went straight

When institutions flush out old hardware, jobbers bid on the stuff in lots,
what they can't make use of they put out at auctions and flea markets for
scrapper/salvagers like me, the Fred T. Sanford of Macdom. (I did not do
this to myself on purpose) A year or so ago I'd have walked across Texas
(or at least a few blocks) to get the widget that would keep an old
Quadra in service. Right now, me, the dog, or these 50 SuperMac Spectrum 8
cards have to go: the dog is sweet, so it's me or them. Speak now or
forever. . .Will anyone ever want a 7100/66 board again? Ever? If you are
going to go to the trouble to disassemble the machine down to the board,
you'd be nutz to put a 66 board back in when you could put in an 80 for
$3-$5. So what's to do with the 66 boards? Say 100 of them? Sigh.

Word Macro

2001-09-24 Thread R.A. Cantrell

I'm recently told (sob) that I have a Word Macro MDMA.A virus. I got my
shots. Virex 5 .8 says I had it and it fixed it. Thanks to the person who
swapped the Virex to me (not to the person who gave me the virus) I'm
pretty embarrassed. I didn't even suspect. No symptoms observed. (Not very
observant?) The files infected were just a few of roughly a hundred all but
identical files made on the same Word app. and in the same global. I do not
unnerstan. Not even close. Why one file that is Chapter Two 8-10 and not
another that is Chapter Two 8-27? woe is me. woe, woe is me.

Where to get Ram

I bought four 16 mg 30 pin simms from Macsolutions.com about two years ago
and they are functioning perfectly in my Quadra 700. They were inexpensive
for the date, too. I think I paid $17.95 a stick. They got them to me one
day earlier than promised as well. I have no affiliation with them, and that
has been my only purchase from them.
