List Netiquette

2005-12-10 Thread Randy Beaudreault

With the recent splurge of activity on this list, I would like to
remind all posters that there is LEM guide to list netiquette. This
guide is available on the Low End Mac website here:
.

I prefer to not have a bunch of wasted space on my daily digests, as
has happened over the past 3-4 days. Please trim your posts!!!

P. S. What generates the =20 characters at the end of some of the
e-mails in the digests?

Prograph Classic

2004-02-22 Thread Randy Beaudreault
Anybody have a copy of the Prograph Classic (v 2.6) IDE? Pictorius
released this to the public back in '95 and I had a copy of it. I
loved it so much that I actually paid for the compiler. ($25 in
'96.) In rearranging my computers, I erased the hard drive
containing Prograph IDE and erased the clone of the drive as well. I
did save the compiler to a floppy though, so I have that. I can't
develop any programs with Prograph since I don't have the IDE (which
is also an interpreter).

On a related note, does anyone know if Pictorius is still in business?

I've done that with my NetBSD firewall/router/DNS server since I have
a small, 6MB, Mac partition on it to boot the IIci. I have 7.1
installed on it. I connect to my OS X G4 to get files I've d/l'd to
my G4 for use by the IIci (mainly install kernels) and other things

I never completed the installation since I don't know exactly how to
setup up CUPS, Ghostscript, and/or Gimp-print to allow RIPing for the
ImageWriter II. I did see it in the Print Center on X.1 but never
did print this way. Once I figure out how to do this, I'm gonna try
it. I'll keep everyone posted on this.

IIc Series Sighting

2002-04-08 Thread Randy Beaudreault

As I was flipping through the channels last night I found Point of No
Return on (La Femme Nikita is the better movie btw) and came upon the
scene where she nukes a computer. (Stuck some gadget in the floppy
slot and then it went poof!) The great thing is that is was a IIc
series Mac. They had some finder windows displaying and some other
junk too. The only thing I have with the scene now is that is a
Vintage Mac no longer in circulation. Anybody know the propmaster
for that movie so we can get our hands on the carcass? This would be
cool for the Low End Mac museum.

Of course. I'm just curious how system switching would work in this
case. Since I want the best system for processor and in my previous
trials switching between 7.1 and 8.1 on the same disk on my Q800 I
couldn't switch back into the 8.1 partition. SystemSwitcher should

Help with Turbo 601

2001-10-31 Thread Randy Beaudreault

I love it! I hit a local thrift store today and found a few Macs
which was great. The topper was when I pulled open the IIci. I saw
a card in it that I new wasn't a cache card since it had a big black
heat sink over the whole card. I popped that baby off and lo' and
behold I see IBM and 601 on the big chip. That's it I buy that over
the 6150/66WGS. (It also has a non-stock hd, a Quantum of some sort
but didn't know the size of this since I couldn't get the model
number, but it's half the height of the drives in my IIcx and IIci so
I know that it isn't stock.) I plug it in at the store and get the
familiar start up sound. That's good, so I may have a great steal
but can't tell until I get it home and hook it up to my monitor.

I get home, hook it up and it works! I get a screen full of teddy
bears (desktop pattern) and clickable windows and hds and the whole
lot. I set up everything to the way I want it with 32-bit addressing
on, the proper monitor settings, etc. Here's where I do the oops. I
enable the 601 in the control panel and restart. I hit the skids
there. LOL. I get the infamous ?-mark-in-the-floppy icon. What
happened there? This is where I need help. I recovered the drive
when I zapped the PRAM. So I'm good to go now and copy the drive to
my backup drive.

What do I need to do to get the Turbo 601 card up and running beyond
the control panel? What is the best system (or only system) for
this? Thanks for any help. Sorry for the long story, but I couldn't
pass up telling the tale.

Trawling belongs to big fishing boats which trawl the ocean with huge
fishing nets. Now for the fishing I've done, trolling required a
trolling motor which you get at Sears. :P Could this be a change in
wording? Two definitions of trolling is that possible? Cool.

As I stated, that was with System 7.1. System 6 Apple File Exchange

File Exchange will read PC disks. System 6's AFE won't.

Ok, I've had enough and now I have to add my $.11. Why are you
bothering with Linux? NetBSD is the one to go with on 68k Macs.
I've put it on my IIci and Q800 and both run flawlessly. Why go with
linux? NetBSD is a mature UNIX for 68k Macs. The only drawback to
it is the non-support for the oddball machines, IIvx and Q950, and
non-FPU Quadra/Centris/LC machines. For further reference try here:

http://www.netbsd.org/Ports/mac68k/

And for you info Edwin, there is an Xserver for this port. But you
will need some memory for it. And judging from LEMs info on this
powerbook, you just may be able to install NetBSD on your machine
unless it has funny I/O stuff.

You mean the computer industry standard! I learned to type senior
year of hs and the guide dots were on the D and K keys to correspond
with the middle finger which is your longest finger and thus, first
placed on the keyboard. Who in the F*** gave us the F and J keys for
the guide dots? It certainly wasn't a typist. This is one of the
reasons I will be going back to the Apple Extended Keyboard II that I
got with my Quadra on my G4 once I get a Griffin iMate.

When did this happen? Not when I was living up in Boise. That was a
different day, I had a local ISP, CyberHigway, and used a 14.4
dial-up connection on my IIcx. They even gave me a copy of MacTCP
that I needed to get up and running. That was 95 and 96. Now I'm
using my phone company's DSL. What a rip there! Speaking of bottom
suckers, I get my phone service provide by a bunch of W. contributing
blood suckers that never heard of customer support. At least I don't
need the PPPoE client provided by them now that I use the PPPoE
client provided by Roaring Penguin on my NetBSD router.

Showing you age there. :) Of course I show my age, 32, when I
remember going to Safeway and checking your TV's tubes in the tube
checker. The 70s what an interesting decade, Vietnam, disco, Jimmy
Carter, and the change in TVs from black and white to color and from
tubes to solid state. My era is the Reagan era, the 80s, home to
parachute pants and the CD. Nope, nostaglia doesn't work for me. lol

I second this. I had RAM Charger working with 9.0.4 (miracle), but
9.1 finally broke it. I'll take all the updates to it to get it to
tame Memory Management on Systems 7 through 9.
