Ethernet of a 6100

Hi,

I finally got a AAUI to ethernet adapter for my 6100, OS 7.5.5. I'm
somewhat lost on what extensions/control panels I need to make it
work.

I've installed Apple Built-In Ethernet, Apple Ethernet NB and
EtherTalk Phase 2, configured Sharing Setup, but the chooser still
doesn't see the network.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Set the Apple Talk Control Panel to Ethernet.

Would be the thing to do except that the Appletalk Control Panel is

The USB Hub cables work well to constrain the ZIP disks from flying out.

Summary: Microsoft QuickBASIC

2001-09-29 Thread Robert Poland

At 7:27 PM -0700 9/28/2001, Andrew Michael MacTao wrote:

The version of QuickBASIC that came with DOS ran in interpreted
mode only. But, the paid version included the option to compile basic
programs into .EXE files. I had it years ago. It worked fairly
decent, as far as DOS boxes go.

The original topic of this thread was Microsoft QuickBASIC (A program
for the Macintosh). Microsoft QuickBASIC was written in about 1985 to
replace Macintosh BASIC per an agreement between Steve Jobs and Bill
Gates. Not sure how that agreement allowed Microsoft to dump
QuickBASIC so soon after. QuickBASIC runs in either compiled or
Interpreted modes. It came with a fairly complete, for Microsoft, 700
page manual.

Further research has led me to believe that QuickBASIC will not run
on a Mac with over 8 megs of RAM. This is because QuickBASIC was
written to use 24 bit memery addressing. Seems like Microsoft or
someone else could have recompiled it.

Based on these findings I stripped a 6100 down to 8 meg of RAM and
tried a QuickBASIC program. It seems to run well and very fast.

Next step is to see if the stripped 6100 can replace the Mac Plus and
its peripherals.

Summary: Microsoft QuickBASIC

2001-09-28 Thread Robert Poland

Original Message
Sorry to off topic, but I have a question related to Macs.

I have several programs that I wrote in Microsoft QuickBASIC, version 1.00E,
  on a Mac Plus.

I would like to phase out the Mac Plus. could use the space.

Microsoft QuickBASIC will not run on a PPC and Microsoft has no interest in
  supporting it.

QUESTION: I don't know what broke it. Does anyone know what is the newest
  machine/OS that can run it?

I know some of the other Basic programs are supposed to translate Microsoft
QuickBASIC programs. They don't deal with more complex commands.

I'm reluctant to learn yet another language.

No on topic responses. Guess I owe Microsoft an apology; I've been
badmouthing them for years cause they dropped QuickBasic. Looks like
I was the only one who ever bought it. No wonder they dropped it.

I've seen at least two 8bit Nintendo Entertainment

that it would need a 1Ghz PC to run at full speed. :)
IIRC, that was about 2 years ago.

I am wondering, was that QuickBASIC (one word) emulation written

Subject: IIcx Problem
Date: Wed, Sep 26, 2001, 12:45 PM

Have a IIcx running as a DNS. Installed OS 7.5.5. Was running well until
  recently.

Seems to work OK while at the office, but by the time I return (later the
same day, or the next day) the machine has shutdown.

Hit the startup button and it boots with the usual not shutdown properly
message. Proceeds to run just fine ... i.e., hasn't shutdown while I have
  been present. Any suggestions?

Changed the battery (3 days ago). Changed the RAM chips (this AM). No
change in problem (happened this AM).

Run it for a day with the cover off. This could be a heat-related issue.

WOW, that's scary advice. Running many of the different computers for
only a few hours can destroy them. The fan, covers, etc. were
designed to cool as a team and interfering with that design is not a
good idea.

Microsoft QuickBASIC

2001-09-23 Thread Robert Poland

Sorry to off topic, but I have a question related to Macs.

I have several programs that I wrote in Microsoft QuickBASIC, version
1.00E, on a Mac Plus.

I would like to phase out the Mac Plus. could use the space.

Microsoft QuickBASIC will not run on a PPC and Microsoft has no
interest in supporting it.

QUESTION:
I don't know what broke it. Does anyone know what is the newest
machine/OS that can run it?

I know some of the other Basic programs are supposed to translate
Microsoft QuickBASIC programs. They don't deal with more complex
commands.

I'm reluctant to learn yet another language.

TIA,

No matter how fast a processor you could install The speed will

Re: 72 pin RAM

2001-09-20 Thread Robert Poland

All the Macs I can think of that use 72-pin RAM are spec'd for 80ns chips.
Faster RAM won't hurt but it also won't help in most cases.

The 8100/80 may spec 80ns But my experience says use 60ns. Even 70ns
are not reliable.

Screen resolution is 72 dpi period. It can't be changed in

  640 x 480, 117Hz
  800 x 600, 95Hz
  1024 x 768, 75

I don't know why this is referred to as resolution. Since I've been
messing with computers (PCs or macs) these have been called
resolution settings. We can probably blame Microsoft for this.

I've always accepted the 72 DPI period. But I just got to thinking about it,
if thats true then;
a 1024 X 768 screen would be 14.22 X 10.66 inches
a 640 X 480 would be 8.88 X 6.66 inches

Neat trick. Must be more to it.

Re: More 030 PowerCache adapter info.

2001-09-19 Thread Robert Poland

There were clip over CPU upgrades for PCs to bump up
from a 386SX to 486 or 486SX to 486DX. Those CPUs
are usually surface mounted and the 486SX has more
pins around it than the 030 does in its J lead
package. (Same type of package can be surface
mounted or used in a PLCC socket.) How that worked is
the x86 SX CPUs have a float pin that when pulled
high (or was it low?) shut the chip down and
disconnected it from all the other pins.
The float pin was originally intended for use in
low power sleep mode for portables. Intel used it
on the 486SX so that a 487DX (actually a full
486 with a slightly different pinout) could take
over from the soldered on SX CPU.

Any idea if any variety of 68000 or other 68k CPU
has a float pin?

Back in 1993 I had a MicroMac accelerator on a Mac Plus. It used a
Killy clip. It clipped on to the 68000 and connected to the
accelerator card.

So in answer to the question, there must be a way.

Re: Mac Plus Screen

2001-09-15 Thread Robert Poland

Just looked in the Book Macintosh Repair Upgrade Secrets by Larry
Pina. He uses 14 pages to describe the processes required to do this
properly. This after you get the case open.

I highly recommend getting this book if you plan on doing much inside
you compact Mac.

Opening the case; I lay the case face down on a soft pad and removing
the 5 screws, four in plain sight on the back and one under the
battery cover. You need a long (about 8 inches) T-15 torx
screwdriver. Opening the case can be difficult. A screwdriver WILL
DAMAGE the case. I use the edge of a steel ruler. Sometimes a sharp
blow will separate the cover.

To do a good job of aligning the screen you need to do other
diagnostics and adjustment, including power supply voltage adjustment.

The square tube CANNOT be rotated. The display rotation is done by
rotating the yoke on the picture tube. The yoke may be stuck to the
tube and difficult or impossible to move.

CAUTIONS: The picture tube may contain several thousands of volts of
stored energy. The early Mac Pluses did not drain this voltage and it
may remain for several days. The first rule for working around this
area is to use only one hand so that the shock will not travel
through your body. You do not need to get near the high voltage, JUST
BE CAREFUL.

HTH,

Did 6800's exist btw? I do tech support for state schools, and some have

educational version existed, however they've all been replaced and seem

6800, 6801, 6802 and 6809 DID exist. I built a kit computer (SWTP) in
the late 70;s that used 6800 and later the 6809. It came out around
the time the Apple I was released. When I sold it, it had over 700K
of ram.

The 6800 family was made by Motorola. We (Engineering Measurements
Co.) sold thousands of traffic controllers using them.

Clock speed was in the range of 1 to 2 Mhz.

Re: External Speakers

2001-08-14 Thread Robert Poland

My question is will there be enough voltage or whatever to power the
speakers, or will I need to rig something else up?

Sam,

NO, there is not enough power coming out of the computer to power
speakers. In fact you could damage the computer by connecting to the
stereo jack.

You can buy speakers with a built-in amplifier, designed to mate with
the stereo jack, for not too much. I have a pair for my iBook that
cost $6 new. And I have a three speaker system on my 8100 that cost
$20 new.

Or you can just use a stereo amp and your old speakers. Cabling could
get to be a pain here.

Re: 800K to 1.44MB?

2001-08-01 Thread Robert Poland

The StarDrive only takes power from the floppy; if I were so inclined, it
would be a trivial matter to wire up a wall wart or small power supply for
it instead. It uses SCSI for all the data transfer.

That's too bad about the AE; sure wish there were an easier way to hook
that and the StarDrive up to my Plus.

Knowing that, it would seem that you could make a daisy chain cable
with IDC connectors and flat cable. Only problem - if I remember
right the port in question is 19 pins. 19 pin connectors are VERY
hard to find. I stripped an old serial (ThunderWorks) scanner to get
a connector for the Mac II.

I doubt it would be too hard to make a DB19 passthrough box that split off
the power coming out of the floppy port, and then the AEHD+ could plug into
the box... as long as you didn't overdraw the port...

What fun would it be to have to plug two things into the wall? :)

Re: 800K to 1.44MB?

2001-07-31 Thread Robert Poland

Got one downstairs somewhere but don't think I ever actually used it
because I've been too busy with other stuff. Oh, and my Plus' HD is using
its floppy port for power, too, I think, so I can't use an external

Guess I was lucky, my CMS 20M HD (now 40M) uses the SCSI port.

Oh, the StarDrive uses the SCSI port too, but it just doesn't have an
external power cable - it draws power from the floppy port. Mebbe I oughta
figure out how to put a wall wart on it or something, or put a daisy-chain
floppy connector on it.

Then again, does the AE have a daisy-chain connector? I can't remember if
it does or not...

The AEHD only has a cable coming out the back. As it is connected to
a floppy port, I would imagine that it (the Plus) would only support
a single Floppy. I would also assume that the StarDrive would only
talk to the floppy port.

Re: Where to get RAM?

2001-07-27 Thread Robert Poland

As a side note, I've found that RAM that is on the line as far as
speed - May work, and pass tests when it is cold but will get worse
as it warms up.

I had two 60ns SIMMs in a 8100 that did just that. Replaced them,
under warranty, and all was well.

Re: Block/Cluster size. Re: I AM A ****NUT!

2001-07-27 Thread Robert Poland

I havn't seen PlusOptimizer (by Alsoft) mentioned.

It will allow you to set block size to 500b (0.5kb). That is a real
space saver if you have a lot of tiny files.

Re: my stash of Macs

2001-07-25 Thread Robert Poland

I do however love my mac LC with 10 megs ram and an ethernet card...
system 7.5.3 although i'd like to find the update to 7.5.5 as I hear it has
open transport built right in.

I see the 7.5.5 update mentioned on http://lowendmac.com/macos.shtml.
