Re: Found a ROM SIMM....

2005-07-07 Thread Snook, John R

Put them in an SE/30 and see what they do.
Or send them to me and I'll do it. :)
johnsn

In my local computer junkyard I found this SIMM in an antistatic bag,
so I have no idea where it comes from.

It's a 64 pin simm with a notch in the middle. It has four, socketed,
EPROM's which have stickers on the top. These read:

342-073*
C APPLE 1983-89
W8929

where the * is 3, 4, 5, or 6 for each EPROM.

Clearly W8929 means week 29 of 1989.

On the web I found a reference to these ROM numbers that indicate they
belong to a Mac IIci.

The PCB is marked 1MEG ROM SIMM AP1257-01

Anybody any suggestions what could be done with this SIMM?

John

US$85 for that doesn't sound like a bad deal at all, but the problem as I see
it is that thing doesn't look like it includes the cable to connect the SCSI
drive to the SCSI connector on the converter, and finding a 1 cable is *not*
going to be trivial :(
Making one might not be too bad though - what's the centre spacing on the IDC
cables for 2.5 SCSI drives? Is it a standard 0.10 centre?
--

No It's .087x, or there abouts.

Time to break out the Digikey catalog...OK, all I can find is either 0.100
centres or 0.050 centres. Can you double-check that measurement, please?
Hey, anyone remember how many pins are in a 2.5 SCSI interface? The SCSI FAQ,
surprisingly enough, doesn't seem to have this info.
the pickle
--
OK the 2.5 SCSI interface has 40 pins on 2mm centers.
A 2.5 IDE HDD has 40 pins on 2mm centers.
So you can use 2.5 IDE HDD cables. I have.

Re: on finding a hard disk for a powerbook 170...

2003-03-04 Thread Snook, John R

2.5 SCSI drives topped out around the 500 megabyte
mark. Apple was just about the only consumer for them.

There are new SCSI drives available that are
actually IDE drives with a super tiny 2.5 IDE to
2.5 SCSI connector converter attached. The problem
there would be finding one with a small enough
capacity, ie, 2gig or less. I don't know if the
converter can be bought by itself. It's more than just
a pin to pin thing, the data and signal stuff has
to be converted too.

I have been thinking about if it would be possible to make a gray scale adapter to run
off any SE30 PDS color board.
I think it would be possible, but how would you do it?
This is how it would work.
Let the Mac analog board run the yoke.
Replace the circuit board that goes on the back of the CRT with a custom one that
plugs in to the SE30 PDS color board output.

What would keep this from working?
How can we make this work?

Re: LCII...dead video?

2002-12-05 Thread Snook, John R
From: Kevin Quosig
I have an LCII from an associate that *should* be working,
but I wonder if the video has gone south.

On an Applevision 14 (the Apple 14 with the built-in
speakers on the sides) the LCII displays staticy vertical
bars.

On an old Apple High-Res RGB 13 I get nothing...black
screen.

Both monitors work when hooked to a Performa 6400/200.

The monitor cable is the same for all tests.

Machine *sounds* like it is booting, but no way to verify.

Any thoughts?

Kevin Quosig
---
My guess would be your battery is dead, or your video simm is gone.

Hook up the Apple 14.
Turn it on.
When you hear it beep, turn it off and then on quickly.
If it's the battery it should boot. Give it time.

To check the video simm open the box and look to see if there is anything in the long
simm slot. The two short ones are for ram.
If you find no video simm in your box, borrow one, put it in and go through the above
again.
Good luck.

Re: changing HD in a IIci

2002-12-03 Thread Snook, John R

--
Hi List

A few months ago I changed a battery in my IIci so I have the
experience of removing the power supply, drive bay pillar and drives.
This was not easy because of the difficulty in pulling the power
supply. Recently the internal HD went kaput and I want to replace it.
The question is: is it necessary to pull the power supply to remove
the hard drive which is on top of everything? It looks accessible but
is it? Sorry for the basic question but I've not done this in a
IIci. Thanks for any info.

You should be able to squeeze the two metal tabs on the HDD holder and lift it out.
Unplug the SCSI and power cables to the HDD first.

those of you who know your II si's, take a look at this item and tell me
if these would work in my II si?
they are RAM doublers that let you put twice as many RAM sticks on your

can the II si be made to see more than the maximum 65MB of RAM the II si

Re: LC again

2002-07-02 Thread Snook, John R

I just bought an LC475 and had similar problems. The rather
strange solution seems to be:
1. Switch on the computer.
2. Wait for about a minute until all of the funny dong and peep
noises have stopped.
3. Turn on the monitor.

If I turn the monitor on first nothing ever seems to show up-- not
even that pale static one would expect if electrons were making it
to the screen.

I would be inteested to know if this is just a peculiarity of my
machine or characteristic of the model (this is the first Apple I have
ever used).

Try turning the computer on (with the monitor on) and after a second turn it
off and on quickly. then let it start up and see if it goes ok. if it does,
your battery is low.
Good luck.

Hi, I have 3 LCs and 1 LCII motherboards, and I can't seen to get them

Try using a known good PRAM battery.
it damn well ought to run on a 12 RGB considering that's what they sold 'em
with!

I've also know the video to work on LC machines with the battery out
but not with a dead battery in.

I have three LC's, two LC II's that don't care if the battery is dead. They
come on anyway. ;^)

More Hmmm...
The 12' RGB works on a Power Mac 7100.
And it works on a LCIII, and 475.
I'm s confused!

LC problems

2002-06-23 Thread Snook, John R

Hi, I have 3 LCs and 1 LCII motherboards, and I can't seen to get them
working.
Or should I say show up on the monitor.
It sounds like it is booting off the HDD.
If I put a boot floppy in, it sounds like it is booting off the floppy.
But I see nothing on an old 12 RGB, and a 12 or 13 high res. RGB.
What monitor are these supposed to use?

So I'm going to use it on my grayscale project.
It only cost $17.50 shipping included.

What about going the other way and finding a 9 color
VGA monitor to shoehorn into an SE/30 along with
one of those Micron color PDS video cards? :)

It's longer so you would need to cut a hole in the back of your Mac.
Also, there are more (bigger) circuit boards in it.

johnsn

OK I took it apart.
The good news is it only has one circuit board in it. And it's small (6.55
x 6.40) so it would easily fit in a SE.
The bad news is the CRT is not easy to install. The tabs that you use to
bolt it in stick out the wrong way, so there is about a .900 gap between
these tabs and where the Mac tabs would be. So to use this CRT I will need
to make custom stand offs.
On the other hand I have an IBM 9 monitor and the CRT bolts right in but it
has way too many circuit boards in it.
HMM.
I took the yoke off the CRT linked above and put it on the IBM and used the
rest stuff that goes with the yoke (I only used the IBM CRT).
It worked, but the picture was small, like this one
http://www.stuartbell.dsl.pipex.com/PowerCC/PMGSP/PMGSP.html
only smaller.
So I will ether make stand offs or try to adjust the picture bigger.

Restart holding down the Shift key until you see the Mac OS splash

Re: Thanks Gamba re: fx rom simm

2002-05-14 Thread Snook, John R

1. What causes the narrow horizontal lines?

It's the wrong ROM for the machine. The horiz lines seem to occur during
the RAM check, which is very early in the boot sequence, which is conducted
by the ROM. At some point later in the sequence the ROM looks to the
machine as being not as wrong as it was before. Sorry this isn't much of
an answer. It's amazing that the wrong ROM works at all.

2. Do you have a installing OS8.1 on your SE/30 for dummies?

It should work for a dummy because it was written by one. :-)
What's the problem with the instructions? Is it the ResEdit hacking?

was a Mac SE with 2 floppy drives. That was in 89 or 90. Now I'm gathering

OK, wierd question - what does low-level formatting a SCSI drive
sound like? I dinged a 1GB 68-pin (don't panic it was only a 5200 rpm

Re: II CX Problem

Dear All:

I have a IICX which I have had since new. It is unmodified and was running

just fine when I retired it a couple of years ago. It has since been
sitting
on the shelf. I wanted to get it up and running for a particular
application
but it won't boot up. I suspected the battery was the culprit since it had

been sitting so long. I pulled it out, checked it and it metered 3.6
volts,
its rated voltage. Cleaned the battery contacts, put it all back together
and still no boot. Any suggestions for the next step?

Your battery will read 3.6 but if you put a load on it the voltage will drop
and not work on your Mac.
